One great thing about the Pandemic: now everybody uses Zoom and Zoom is available worldwide. It's made planning this strike so much easier. It's not fail-safe secure, but we save the secretive discussions for cutting edge encrypted message spaces. The fully coordinated strike begins today!

Ruins of the Rammassan Grainaries in Thebes: ground zero of the first known incident where workers stood up to the State and its enforcers for their right to fair wages.

At one point the powers that be sent the workers

, hoping that they'd just go home and stop making a fuss in the streets. Truly, there is nothing new under the sun. The next day the workers took over one of the gates to a major grainary in Thebes. They broke into one of the storage rooms, and the grainary's officials...that's right...called the police. Ma'at was both a goddess, and a personification of a cluster of philosophical concepts: truth, justice, balance, order, harmony, law, morality. These concepts are components of what we now think of as social contract, or, dare I say social justice. The Pharoah himself had violated Ma'at by not requiring his representatives to treat the workers with care and respect.

However Ramses III wasn't directly responsible for the complete lack of Ma'at in how the workers were being treated. The local government was at a loss. The grainaries in Thebes were empty and they were terrified if they sent for help or even hinted things weren't as they should be in Thebes they would be executed for messing up the Pharoah's 30 year Jubilee. Ramses III's vizier even came to Thebes about some statues, and nothing in his records indicated he was told about the workers, or even suspected something was amiss. The strikes continued off and on, whenever the workers payments were late. But, the Jubilee itself, 4 years later, was a great success. Wine, beer, feasts and festivities temporarily eased resentments and tensions. You could consider pizza Friday at the office to be a pale copy of the festival.

Perhaps the most astonishing thing about the entire series of strikes leading up to the Jubilee was that commoners had take on one the highest responsibilities of the Pharoah -- to embody Ma'at. These workers weren't bricklayers or masonry mixers. They were the most skilled artisans, the top of the labor food chain. And their positions in the food chain was a factor in their success. The true significance of this event that Egypt had an empowered workforce for centuries. Although it was the first strike, it was certainly not the last. Workers in Egypt, even the bricklayers, knew their worth and fought for their dignity. Strikes were never memorialized in temples, tombs or statuary, but there were a few papyrus records that chronicled Egypt's worker movements. Maybe somewhere on a lonely rock in the Upper Nile valley, there are a few heiroglyphic graffiti calls to action yet to be discovered. "Workers of the Nile UNITE!"

Although the Artisan class of workers in ancient Greece had cosmopolitan lifestyles and and most or all of the freedoms enjoyed by citizens, they were a numerically small group, and as were not in the habit of striking for better (or any) wages and working conditions. They were more similar to small business owners than people working for wages or the barest of necessities. Despite the democratic ideals of city-states like Athens, Greece did not contribute much conceptually to the social welfare of workers.

A Pleb named Lucius Sicinius Vellutus spoke out to workers, suggesting that they stage a walk-out: leave the city and let the elites fend for themselves for a change. A huge number of plebs walked out of Rome and up the Mons Sacer (Sacred Mountain). Vellutus and other plebs stayed in Rome and negotiated with the patricians.

The Hortensian Law being passed

The Roman Plebian class went on to stage 3 more strikes. About 50 years after the first walkout, the then-serving Tribune of the Plebs was murdered over his calls for abuse of power. Plebs rioted in the streets over the power abuse and murder and then organized another walk-out which brought commerce in Rome to a standstill. This strike was successful, too. The Tribune of Plebs office was reestablished and several patricians resigned from government. Over the next roughly 150 years three more strikes were called for similar reasons. The final strike resulted in the Hortensian Law. Patricians and plebeians had equal political rights and the patricians were no longer allowed to approve or disapprove of the work done by the Tribune of the Plebs. And, the Plebian Assembly was formed. The working class could pass their own laws, conduct and judge their own judicial cases, and elect their own representatives. It was a step toward democracy, thanks to the working class.

Larger, more powerful unions in the US stood up and extended a hand to help essential workers rise and it made a huge difference. The deaths due to Black Death fell much more heavily on the lower classes than on the wealthy, who could afford to just move away when Black Death took hold in a city, village, or rural estate. Everyone else were stuck in place, had little help, and were decimated. After it was over, labor shortages were so extreme that crops were left in the ground to drop, despite the farmland owners offering to share the crops 50/50 with laborers. Peasant wages went way, way up, and didn't come back down to pre-plague levels.

The strike began in May, and by June most skilled workers had won the fight for 10 hour workdays. Unskilled workers went on strike in 1836 to win similar concessions.

Where is the bear on the victory conditions?

I knew that most players would probably ask for dayvig and other killing roles, but I was determined for the game not to decimate itself by day 2. I kept the unusual killing roles, and loved the bomb vest that lemon.tangerine requested, though I tweaked it some.

Instead of bullet hell, this game was redirect hell.

And btw, I loved all the quirky roles that were suggested and tried to make room for every one of them!

In my designs, dawn and twilight are separate phases where something happens that depends on the day or night's resolution, but isn't part of the day or night phase. So vengeful can't happen until a player has been eliminated, and the elimination, itself, ends the day phase.

The COVID-19 crisis was a turning point, focusing on workers stuck on the bottom rungs with no or inadequate healthcare, abysmal working conditions, and paltry minimum wages. My thoughts on the game:


I picked Syryana and Prism as reviewers because I knew that Syr would encourage my chaotic side with the design and Prism would try to keep me closer to the straight and narrow. They both delivered and I promise you this game was much, much better for their review skills.

Prism is an incredible co-mod. Thank you so much for being there when I needed you, despite your insane schedule!

I should have given the Union Busters some more power, including at least one ninja shot.

I need to dial back the madness in my role madness setups. I keep telling myself to simplify next time, and then dial up the complexity instead.

I'll probably ask for a design time limit exception with future large theme uPIcks to allow for more tire kicking and balance juggling. This game could have used a couple more days in the workshop.

I had initially planned to have very light flavor and focus on the mechanical hell I was co-creating with every player's JOAT picks. Syryana suggested the Union Buster identities, which I loved, and then it snowballed from there.

I'm so happy to read that you enjoyed playing this game, and I very much enjoyed the role playing that wove through the game days!

If you like the JOAT uPick concept, I'll be happy to run another one someday, and if you'd like to try your own hand at designing a JOAT uPIck you're very welcome to do so!
