The year is 2X22. The Earth is doomed. Humanity, on the verge of extinction. Rocky crags erupt with putrid magma where oceans once brimmed with life. The stars at night are choked by belching smog. War, disease, and disaster have ravaged all lands, leaving nothing but waste in their wake.
What remains of
The concept is simple, even if the technology is not. Create a digital reconstruction of every living person. Upload these copies to a shared server - PARADISE, they've named it. Wrap the server in armor, give it micro thrusters, solar panels, asteroid deflection systems. Then launch it into space, far from this dying planet. If our physical bodies cannot survive, then perhaps our minds will. They will be called the Ascended. Proponents of PARADISE - the flesh and blood eager to see their Ascended copies - are called Digitalists.
There is resistance of course, and rumblings of sabotage. There are those who feel a life inside a computer is no life at all. This PARADISE, they say, is false. An abomination. If we are destined to be snuffed out like a candle, then best to do it with poise, not clawing and screaming in the void just for a cruel facsimile of personhood. These rebels - these Fallen - have a plan to ensure that the death of our species is a dignified one.
It's simple. All the Fallen have to do is make sure
The scientists in charge of the project were foresightful and clever. They had devised a method of entry into PARADISE to give humanity's remnants a chance. Only in twos can uploads occur, and only by mutual agreement. Thus, trust becomes the defining and only way to secure a digital future.
But how can you trust when you don't know who wishes you to Fall?

Homo sapiens
