Let's start with a game everyone knows and

loathes

loves, Monopoly. Don't recognise the board? That's because it's the patent for The Landlord's Game, a game designed in 1902-3 by Lizzie Magie, a follower of the economist Henry George, to demonstrate the belief that owning land and the concept of rent benefited property owners while financially injuring tenants. The Parker Brothers ended up buying the patent off her for $500, after realising "the monopoly game" they brought off Charles Darrow wasn't his to sell. However they continued to publicise the Darrow origin story.

CONTENT RULES

1. Follow all site rules as listed here.
   
2. Avoid usage of the words "lynch" or "hang" and related terms. My suggestion is elimination, elim, E-1, ELo, MELo, etc.
   
3. This is a game where we get to call each other scum and manipulate and lie others. Beyond that please keep it civil, I don't ever want to reach the point where I don't want to read the game I'm running. If you feel like a player has gone too far but hasn't stopped after you ask them to please contact me.
   
4. Don't talk about ongoing games. Details can be found here.
   
5. No provable randomness.
   
6. No cryptography. Breadcrumbing is allowed.
   
7. No hidden text or text smaller than 75.
   
8. Claiming you are mafia is ok. Claiming your team is not.
   
9. You may request a private notes thread.
   
10. Don't directly quote mod communications, or shared private threads, real or faked. Paraphrasing is ok, quoting from a personal notes thread is ok.
    
11. At end of game you will have 48 hours to redact any posts you have made in game related private threads, or request that the thread is not shared. Following that, any threads will be shared. Unless you specifically ask for it the dead/spectator thread will be released immediately.
    
12. If you require a replacement please ask via pm. Do not discuss replacements (yours or others) in any game threads other than a private notes thread.

DEADLINES, ACTIVITY and V/LA

1. You will have 48 hours to confirm role and alignment by pm or private thread. The game will start after 48 hours or 10/13 players have confirmed.
   
2. The thread will be locked during pre-game~confirmation, and night time.
   
3. Day 1 will last for 10 days. Day 2 onwards will last for 7 days.
   
4. Nights will last for 48 hours.
   
5. Post game advancing content every 48 hours, or every 72 hours over the weekend, or you will receive a prod. An example of game advancing content is "I got prodded. XXXX is still scum". If you repeatedly post at the end of the prod timer your prod timer may be reduced.
   
6. If you get prodded 3 times, or fail to replay to a prod after 24 hours, you will be replaced.
   
7. If you wish to go V/LA, please do so via pm or
   bolded
   in the game thread.
   
8. If you are V/LA your prod timer will be every 72 hours.
   
9. If you are going to be V/LA for an extended time with zero access please ask for a replacement instead.
   
10. If you are 24 hours away from a deadline for taking an action I will send you a reminder. This does not count as a prod.

GAME ACTIONS

1. If you wish to vote for a player please use VOTE: PLAYER vote tags. If you use
   VOTE:PLAYER
   bold tags I may miss it.
   
2. If a majority of players vote for the same player that player will be eliminated, and twilight will begin.
   
3. If a majority of players vote for VOTE: No Elimination or the deadline is reached, no player will be eliminated and twilight will begin.
   
4. During twilight all living players are still alive and may talk as normal until the thread is locked and night begins. Votes and unvotes will no longer be counted.
   
5. Once a player is dead and their role and alignment revealed, they are no longer allowed to post in the public thread or any shared private threads they have access to, even a BAH post. They will be granted entry to the dead thread.
   
6. Night actions may be submitted by PM, or by Mafia private thread. If you do not submit an action you will do nothing. You are free to change your mind up until deadline.
   
7. I will accept a shortened night phase if all living players ask for it via PM.
   
8. If I think it counts, it counts. Don't play around with edge cases if you don't want to risk me interpreting it the wrong way.

Monopoly is all well and good but I'm here to post about hobbyist board games because I'm a nerd. Settlers of Catan is a classic of the genre and is considered to have popularised the Eurogame, which is characterised by mostly indirect player interaction, no player elimination, catch up mechanics and a decent amount of abstraction in game pieces. Amongst a lot of hobbyists it's thought of as fun but not necessarily having aged as well as some, but for the top level competitors it has become an aggressively social game, where manipulating other players to get the most out of the trading mechanic is a big key to victory.

We all know Snakes and Ladders from our childhoods, a simple game of pure luck to help with counting and often quickly discard in age. But did you know it began life as a Hindu morality lesson from ancient India. Known as Moksha Patam, the mechanics were intended to teach the idea that leading a virtuous life would help you break away from the cycle of reincarnation. The ladders were named for virtues and the snakes were named for vices, and there were many more snakes than ladders to show the difficulty of remaining good and not succumbing to the temptations of life.

Skulls and Roses, now more commonly found as Skull, is a simple and elegant bluffing game with beautiful art, described in universe as a game the author discovered travelling with biker gangs - the original art was inspired after their tattoos. Players start with 3 Roses and 1 Skull, which they lay face down in front of them, while bidding on how many of these face down cards they can flip without revealing a skull. Reveal a skull, lose one of your cards, and the first person to win two bids wins the game. It's so simple that if you are ever stuck somewhere with friends and nothing to do you can easily reproduce the game (if not the art) with a deck of cards, or beer mats and a pen.

It's one of my favourites, but I mostly picked it because it features skulls, cos, y'know...

I may have struggled to find a good photo but

Cosmic Encounter is one of my favourite boardgames, as I've already established. In it you take control of one of dozens of wacky alien races vying to be the first to five foreign colonies. But there is a catch, which player you'll have an encounter with on your turn is random. You have to navigate destiny, game altering alien powers that are intentionally unbalanced, and a system of alliances to let you fight back against (or stops you benefiting from) that imbalance to fight your way to victory.

Go is an ancient Chinese boardgame often claimed to be the oldest continually played game. It is known for it's simple rules and massve compexity and is a bit of a passion of mine that might appear a few times in this thread if I'm struggling for ideas. For now I'll just leave you with this quote I love by chess grandmaster Edward Lasker

Dixit is a game of delightfully whimsical clues. Each turn one player gives a clue, then all players choose a card from their hands to create a line up of possibilities. Each player other than the clue giver then guesses on what the correct one is. The clue giver and guessers both score points for correct guesses, and guessers can also score points for each person they mislead. But the guesser needs to be careful as they score nothing if everybody or nobody guesses their image from the line up.

Carcassone is another classic of the Eurogame genre, named for medieval fortified town in the south of France. You lay tiles and place counters on them to try and score the most points from different terrain features - a task harder said than done as the game is known for being very difficult to score accurately before the end. Those people shaped counters, known as meeples, originate from this game and are now a regular component in many boardgames.

So, you did over the bank - and now you are trapped with a bunch of other people with loose morals and guns deciding how to split the loot. Cash'n'Guns is a social deduction party game of navigating a mexican standoff. Each round you get a bunch of rewards, and then everyone points their gun at each other. If a gun is pointed at you it's up to you to divine whether your opponents are faking it or using one of their precious bullets. You can back out, but stay in and get it wrong and ... BANG! The people still in get to take from the spoils, which include cash, fine art, extra bullets, or even the title of Godfather, which lets you have first dibs at the treasure next time.

Salem 1692 is one of a trio of games from the Dark Cities series by Facade Games, and a favourite of mine. The series focuses on real life cities where tragic things happened - this one is the Salem Witch trials. In it each player starts with a number of 'TRYAL' cards, the vast majority of which are Not a Witch, but if you've ever held a Witch card you are tainted. Players play and draw from a deck of cards that allow them to attack other players hands, protect them from harm and most importantly, build up enough accusations to flip the TRYALs and find the Witches. But be warned, in the deck there is the Conspiracy, where the taint of of the Witches spreads to new players, and the Night when the Witches start to kill.

It's also a social deduction game I failed to get running in mish mash, but I will try again at some point... *shakes fist*

Illimat is a bit more of an obscure game but one with an interesting story. On the one hand it's a relatively simple set collecting game, with a few extra rules to add some spice and variance. On the other it's a strange story of a cult with the weird symbology and faux-tarot figures. On the third, it started life as a prop in an album photoshoot for the band the Decemberists. Later, having gotten into board games to pass time on the road, they decided to make it into a real game and got in contact with the designer Keith Baker to make it into the real deal.

Sushi Go is a fun pocket sized game about having a fulfilling meal at a sushi restaurant. Remember restaurants? It's a drafting game where you pass around hands of cards and pick one each turn, trying to collect different types of sushi with different ways of scoring points, while making sure you get enough dessert to finish off the meal in style and get a big points payout. The expansion Sushi Go Party gives you loads more types of sushi to collect so that each game is a different experience. It is also the board game I most recently played with a physical copy of.

Patchwork is a lovely little 2 player game created by German designer Uwe Rosenberg. This is an example of one of his favourite mechanics - tetrising tiles together. The two players compete to get the right tiles, arranged in a circle around the board, to get as close as possible to completing their patchwork quilt. Each tile has a unique shape so once the thing you need is gone, it's gone for good.

Look out for Uwe Rosenberg's name, he's probably gonna come up more than once. I'm kind of a fan.

Zombie Dice is an aggressively simple push your luck game. There are 13 dice in a cup, 6 easy green ones, 4 medium yellow ones, and 3 hard red ones. Each die represents a survivor. You are a zombie trying to get to 13 brains. Each turn you roll 3 dice, and get either a brain, a runner or a shotgun. And a choice, stop and bank my brains, or keep going and take more random dice from the cup which you reroll along with your runners. But get to 3 shotguns and you lose it all. So, anyone for braaaaiiiins?

I had intended to use Zombie Dice for the elimination but I was kinda rushing when I woke up this morning, so you get Go again.

Here we see Satō Tadanobu, a legendary Heian period Samurai. The story goes that he was caught unarmed and so defended his master with the object he had to hand, a goban. This image has given rise to the concept of the 'nuclear tesuji' (a tesuji is a clever or trick move) - namely picking up the board and throwing at the wall, or your opponents head, to avoid losing the game.

I can't believe it's taken me so long to feature this. Ticket to Ride is a classic of hobbyist board gaming, often described as the gateway drug to the genre. In it you collect sets of coloured cards necessary to build the corresponding pieces of track and score points. Though of course the big points are in your hidden tickets, scored when you can make a journey between two destinations on your track alone! Ticket to Ride Europe is often considered an improvement on the original, despite adding a little extra complexity in sea routes and tunnels.

The Queen has died. The Princess barely leaves her room. What a wonderful time to try and woo her with a beautiful letter!

Love Letter is a social deduction game for 2 to 4 players. Each player has a card in their hand, representing who currently has their letter for the Princess. The higher the number the closer your letter is to your desired destination. On your turn you draw a card and play a card ranging from the humble guard who can intercept other players letters if you correctly guess who holds it to the Princess herself who will win you the game, unless she is found with the letter herself and must burn it to hide the evidence. Last player standing or player with the letter closest to the Princess when the last card is drawn wins. Such is love!

Dead of Winter is a big box co-operative game about surviving the end of the world. You travel amongst the remenants of your town, risking frostbite and zombie bite, trying to find supplies to fix whatever is falling apart at your home base. In addition to your group objective each of you also has an individual objective you need to reach if you are going to win. But be careful... one of you may be a traitor.

The boardgame of our times. Pandemic is a co-operative boardgame where you play disease specialists working out of the CDC in Atlanta, Georgia trying to stop four pandemics at once from taking over the world. It's spawned a number of expansions, and even a legacy game. But I think the most interesting one is a flash game of the same name where you play the disease, modifying your dna to try and defeat the world. This eventually became the computer game Plague Inc... which now has it's own board game! Funny how stuff like that happens.

One of my favourite games, I chose this image to try and convey just how much stuff comes in the game A Feast For Odin

(seriously, the four player boards center left in that image are about the size of a piece of A4 paper)

. Designed by Uwe Rosenberg (I said to look out for that name) it combines two of his favourite mechanics - tetrising tiles that we've seen before, and intricate worker placement. This game covers the full breadth of Norse life, sustinance, economy, Viking raids, discovering new lands and immigrating to them, and so much more. It's not a game for the mechanically faint of heart, but the first player maker is a Moose token if that sways you.

Secret Hitler is a social deduction game set in 1930s Germany. Most of the players are liberals, but are few of you are members of the fascists, and one of you is Hitler. Hitler doesn't know who the fascists are but they know him. Each turn everyone votes on a pairing of President and Chancellor. The president sees three policies, who passes two to the Chancellor who picks on - and the deck is stacked in favour of the fascists. Liberal policies bring the liberals closer to victory, but fascist policies unlock special powers that can bring the liberals closer to their other victory condition, killing Hitler. But be warned, too many fascist policies, or Hitler becomes chancellor after enough fascist policies are passed, and the fascists win.

Endgame

An appropriate game to end on, cos it comes after the adventure is over. You are a party adventures, relaxing and drinking in the Red Dragon Inn, and you know how to party gooooood. Each of you plays specific cards from their own deck of actions suitable for the specialities, and with those cards you fight, drink and gamble to be the last one standing. Get too much drink in you (and getting hurt impacts your fortitutde and thus your ability to resist alcohol, donchuknow) and you pass out; Run out of money and angry barstaff kick you out to go sleep in the stables. It's a fun, raucous, and suprisingly diplomatic experience that shows the fun only stops if you let it.

At various points n1 mafia were killing Bob, FL, or no one. The protection was initially on TGP but they moved to Gamma then Johnny because they were concerned about action investigatives blowing the gambit.

Combined with FL considering Gamma instead of TGP that night could have gone so many ways
