Going "hey I'm going to sheep" can be used as a cover for sheeping. People think it's so obvious scum wouldn't do it, but they do, sometimes.

In any case, I mostly wanted to use it as a jumping off point to get Elli to say if there was a reason for the shift, though I know he can be obtuse about explanations sometimes (as can I).

I have used this method of scumhunting before and it is fairly successful.

I did find Ellie scummy day 1, but less so increasingly, and by the time I remembered why I found him scummy day 1, after the very long night and the shenanigans that happened in my compound, ellie had claimed vig, which happened very early on in the day. I also spent time probing Friend, which turned out to be important later, and probably others too. I also found Luxury quite scummy and really, seriously thought they would flip scum, as noted. I fully supported the wagon. I wanted Luxury to have a chance to post since it's more prudent, but reck hammered, so I knew it was a town hammer anyway. And the "bohemian rhapsody crap" was relevant at the time.

I found Amarap scummy when they replaced in, and tried to get them lynched. No one would follow me. Gradually, I began to get a town read on Amarap and I actually thought they were town by the end of yesterday. All of this is in my iso.

As for buddying Reck, I wouldn't call it that. I've done nothing to Reck that you haven't done to Thor - treat my compound member as town because I have decided he is. If you think that's buddying, then I guess you can call it that, whatever. But then you are also buddying.
