shaft.ed wrote:So I've got about two weeks to find a flat in Munich. I'm having trouble finding useful websites for rental listings. I imagine that a large part of the problem is that I can't read German as of yet. But I do have German speaking friends in the lab. So if any of you guys know any good websites for local rental listings in Germany please post them here.
Try immobilienscout24.de
Local newspapers' websites might be worth a look, too.
-You guys need to be open later. 24 hour grocery shopping is really one of life's greatest joys.
If you have a train station nearby, go there. They usually have 24/7 grocery stores (even on Sundays and holidays.. like today).
If you have too much money, fuel stations are an option, too.
If all you want to buy is some (alcoholic?) beverages, there's maybe a "Spätkauf" somewhere near you. Those are usually open around the clock, too.
And seriously what's with banks closing for lunch? Have you heard of staggering your lunch breaks?
I knew Munich was a bit rural in places, but that's ridiculous. Nothing here closes for lunch.

The cost for the apartment( 2 bedrooms, sitting room, 2 bathrooms and separate kitchen) is 400EUR per month including all facilities/utilities (water, electicity, heater, internet, gas etc.)
Considering the claimed location, that's just impossible.

I'm not sure why a security deposit is a scam tell, though.

Yeah, that's the norm.

I would say the chances are good, but it would probably make sense to actually test it first. Don't want to be stuck with 56k because UMTS only works when you stand on a ladder in the kitchen.

I assume you are aware that it limits the speed to 56k anyway once you reach 5GB traffic?

I've found numbers of 70k for Skype with video. That would be some five hours a day before you hit the limit. So if that's all you do, it shouldn't be a problem.

Can you explain what exactly "processing microscopy data" entails? I can't quite envision how that would require "good graphics".

Ah okay. I doubt those programs would make much use of a graphics adapter to be honest, it is probably all done on the cpu. Even so I think the main concern is going to be RAM. I don't know whether you'll find a laptop with 16GB, but would certainly recommend that then (seeing how even that's only 8 pictures..)

Although this sounds like a task that should be run on a cluster and not on a laptop..

Are we talking about ImageJ? If so, can you verify your Java runtime is 64bit? (Did you use the installer that comes bundled with 64bit Java?)

I would guess the unspecified one is 32bit and it's using that one.
You could check by opening a command prompt and entering "java -version".

If so, there's bound to be something in the control panel -> java thing where you can select which one to use.
That said, I'm not sure what you'd need the 32bit for anyway, so you could just try removing it.

When are you going? Venice can be very crowded in the summer.

Can't really help with the Balkans. Two weeks isn't all that long if you travel by train, so I guess you'll not spend too much time getting to the ferry?

If you are in Pecs anyway, it would be foolish not to return on a Budapest, Vienna, Salzburg (and if too much time left, Chiemsee) routing ;)

So.. did you buy a Dirndl for your wife yet? Or are you not attending the Oktoberfest (which for inexplicable reasons is in late September)?
