yeah, i'm pretty sure he's going to have 130 HRs at the end of the season :P

Proposal

Does anyone mind if I change the Auction League from Daily - Today to Daily - Tomorrow? It shouldn't do much that's practical, but Daily - Today is usually nice because you can pick someone up immediately and plug them in for that day. With FAAB, you have to wait until the next day anyway. As a result, Probable Pitchers and the like are off. There may be a practical problem with this I'm not thinking of, so speak up if you see one.

why? I mean, you can't add anyone Today, Today* because FAAB will make you wait until Tomorrow, Tomorrow** anyway.

*is the greatest
**and tomorrow, creeps in this petty pace from day to day.

i'm pretty sure that once they're on your team you can make roster moves until 5 minutes before the first pitch of a player's games.

I feel like if your thing is getting hit by the ball (and his OBP is significantly higher because of his HBP, getting on base approximately once every five games due to a HBP), you probably shouldn't have this angry attitude about being hit by a pitch.

bah. tactical error on the zorasters' part. I had Saunders who I was waiting to see if I should use. Then I decided to pick up Chacin to supplement. but... when i went to put them in the only pitcher i could sub out was Saunders because all the others were in games or had finished.

I really want Dickey to succeed. except not tonight. although... i'm fine if he pitches 5 shutout innings then gets replaced so long as he strikes out zero.

I am slowly spinning out of control on the head to head league. Because we only have 3 moves, it means I'm using all 3 to try and win at the end of the week and then have to decide whether to try to correct on Monday with one of my three or to keep driving. Right now I only have one bench batter as I have picked up (sigh) Jorge De La Rosa to try and cement Ks and, if I'm very lucky, QS in a tightly contested 5-4 game.

I don't want to talk about my pitiful auction team.

we have a bunch of close games again:

AGAR vs. Mongolian: 5-5
Seattle vs. kmd: 5-5
Fightin Todd vs. Aguilas: 5-4
Zoraster vs. Montreal: 4-5

i think 49 vs. LL was 4-6 earlier too.

I think this one win business is pretty awesome. Obviously it may be worse for showing who's the "best" team, but it makes every week like a little mini game, and with a season this long, that's pretty cool

I will definitely take the tie. Winning Ks 73 to 72 is pretty awesome and made picking up de la rosa worthwhile. i'm stuck with some bad pitchers now though.

he's actually not that productive. He just has decent points because he's pitched a lot of innings, but given the innings cap, that isn't great. He has 159 points over 32.2 innings. Compare that to Jarrod Parker who has 267.5 over 18 innings...

For pitchers, the big point gainers are: Losses (15), HBP (15 which I shouldn't have put so high), HRs (14 pts after taking into account all the various ways you get points from it), Blown Saves (20 points).

Just allowing earned runs is a pretty good way to rack up points though.

I'm having a blast with the league, but I think there are a few changes I'll make for next year.

5-5 between LL and me going into the weekend. I'm going to have to pitch Haren, which I'm not happy about, but fortunately his ratios are blown.

It looks like we're competing for Ks, QS, SHolds, SBs, and HRs in that order. Anything else is unlikely to flip.

Today it's my Haren (Cin) vs. his Griffin (Bal)
Tomorrow it's my Corbin (Col), Villanueva (Mia), Lohse (LAD), and Fister (Atl) vs. his Iwakuma (LAA), and Minor (Det)

So I'm feeling pretty good about Ks and probably since I start 5 vs. his 3. HRs are going to be a stretch for me to get to, down 3 with my guys having cooled off dramatically. SBs and SHolds are really and truly tossups.

---
Other 5-5 Matchups are:

Montreal vs. kmd, where the advantage probably lies with Montreal as she has the opportunity to flip 2 categories to kmd's 1, but it's really tough to say.
Toddfathers vs. Mongolian BBQ, where the advantage is with the Mongolian BBQ since the Toddfathers are farther away from flipping any category.

pick up pitchers pitching today and tomorrow with your 3 picks, preferably ones with good matchups today and next week (since you may use them again next week). Can't do much about RBIs or HRs, which you're close on, but you CAN make a run at Ks and QS. You're out of reach on ERA already, and probably WHIP, so it's not really a problem if you pitch poorly.

One thing about this 3 moves per week restriction is that it makes it really hard to replace minor pieces. Like, I might want to find a different reliever to slot in than Jake McGee, but the advantage to finding someone else is small compared to other moves I can make so he just never gets replaced.

all right. last day and I'm defending SBs 3-2, QS 5-4, and SHolds 4-3. He's only defending K's 67-55.

Going to be a big day. I'm pitching 4 pitchers to his 2, so Ks are within reach for me, but SBs and SHolds both make me nervous. Just never know what's going to happen during the day for those, and I'm having to not start one of my relievers because of my 4 starters.

Who divided these divisions!?!?

Also, I'm not entirely sure why it thinks Pujols has 4 home runs for me this week. While he did have an impressive 2 last night in the 19 inning game, i don't think he mysteriously managed to sneak in two more.

Ohhh now I see why. The system is confused because of how long the game lasted. It counted his 3 2 3 game for yesterday's game against Oakland, but then it counted it AGAIN today because the game ended so late it thought it was just part of today's game. That also happened to Reddick and Donaldson for Agar.

It'll also affect Rhinox, who the system thinks had a pitcher pitch two consecutive 5 K, 1.69 ERA games. He was only half an inning away from earning a QS... despite beginning his game in the 13th inning. And Tommy Hanson, etc.

To be fair, the great thing about head to head is that it's a new game every week. Being 0-4 hardly means you'll miss the playoffs.

Plus, you just got hanley back.

Jerome Williams, who is not particularly fantasy relevant, earned a QS last night. I wonder how many times a season a non-starter earns a QS. More than that, I wonder how many times ever a pitcher has earned a QS despite pitching entirely in extra innings.

all right. going to risk not picking up another pitcher. Ryu might put it to 6-4 by getting a quality start, but I think it's unlikely he'll manage to get your WHIP low enough to pass me there. Also, hopefully Gaudin doesn't get a hold, and I can hang on to the tiny Run lead.

well as it stands, only the divisional winner of the otters would go on and get a bye in the playoffs while the other 5 teams would be from the tigers. that will likely balance out after we play the final 8 weeks (which are primarily intradivisional games), but it may not.

yeah, the first 13 weeks are a mix of inter and intradivisional games. after that you'll start getting almost entirely interdivisional games. So it pays to be good later!

I think we need a replacement for the Fighting Toddfathers. He's starting DL players and has been since the start of the season.

EDIT: Also need one for Seattle Monkeys. Might try prodding these guys.

We really do need a replacement for the Monkeys, he's still starting 2 DL players. kmd is not starting a 2B at all, but maybe that's a strategy?

hey, gorc or qwint. Do you have any interest in taking over the monkeys in the Auction Keeper league? he's literally starting 6 DL players right now.

By the way, as I announced in preseason, I'll be in Italy from May 22-June 4th. I'm only bringing my iphone. I should be able to access my teams through the awful yahoo app, but I won't really be around to do much talking about the games, and honestly I'll probably just spend my time maintaining my team rather than acquiring anyone (so unlikely to have the last minute crucial pick like this last week).

LockeLamora will act as commissioner in my absence.

well when you win the league in September, it'll feel really, really good.

All right. For the moment, the league commissioner, on behalf of the rest of the league, has taken over the Seattle Monkeys. They are now hereby renamed the Mafiascum Expos. I'll likely transfer access to LL after this week (as mentioned, I'll be gone) and rotate it among a few of us as the season goes on, making sure the monkeys never face the person who has control.

A few rules for commissioner control:
1. No manager of teams that are playing the Mafiascum Expos will have control during that week.
2. Managers are not expected to put the Expos as their first priority, but they should attempt to make a decent team, and should to the best of their abilities, assure that they are starting players who are actually playing.
3. The Expos may not make any trades. They may only add/drop.

BUT I'd really prefer to get a real life human in there.

OBP is (Hits+Walks+Hit by Pitch)/(At Bats + Walks + Hit By Pitch + Sacrifice Fly).

At Bats count if there's an error or fielder's choice, so theoretically either error or fielder's choice could lead to it.

I thought it only appropriate that the only manager from Montreal would take over for the Mafiascum Expos in my absence. Therefore, welcome the newest acting comanager of the league's worst team: DrippingGoofball!

yeah. we here in the otter division are just biding our time until we can have a ridiculous run of luck to win it all!

I have to say, one win head to head is way more fun than I anticipated. I'm so tense every weekend trying to figure out how to get the maximum from my team.

Quick shout out to LL for my money league team. He's coma aging while I'm in Italy. My team basically ran on auto pilot for two months. Then the second I go on VLA and LL steps in he faces a crisis at just about every position. Thanks so much!

actually, it only hurts me to have LL lose. It's pretty obvious that he's going to make the playoffs. Him continually winning will make it so that other people have lower win totals.

man. the otter division is bad. Montreal Herons are in 2nd due to the fact that they're leading a division. I'm technically tied with them but lose in the tie breaker (I guess? I tied with the herons. whatever), so I'm 0 games back. Yet I'm 6th.

I don't know if there are really enough people paying attention to make that a worthwhile thing. enough trouble running a team!

Yes! we do!

You'd take over the Mafiascum Expos (which you can rename).

If you need any help on how it all works, feel free to ask but as a basic run down:

Every week you face a new opponent like football. But rather than certain things giving you points to win the matchup, you're trying to win the majority of 10 different categories: Runs, Stolen Bases, RBIs, On Base Percentage, Home Runs for batters and Quality Starts*, ERA, WHIP, Strikeouts, and Saves+Holds.* In addition, our league only allows 3 roster changes per week.

*Quality Starts is any time your pitcher makes it at least 6 innings and gives up 3 or fewer runs
*A Hold is any time a pitcher enters in a save situation and gets at least one out and leaves the game without having given up the lead.

Do you have an e-mail I can send the invitation to? We use Yahoo

come on Aguilas!

I'll note that last week's rivalry week was comprised of 7 interdivisional games, and despite the fact that the otter division has been bad mouthed, we went 5-2.

I don't know why Yahoo didn't publicize it, but I did put up the reasoning for the different dates in the league rules section:
In post 226, zoraster wrote:Trade Deadline
The trade deadline is August 4th. This is much earlier than the other league's in order to prevent too much tomfoolery with the keepers.

to be clear: you'll be able to make all the trades you want after the season ends of your keepers.

yeah i apologize. I should have been on top of that.

The tomfoolery would be increasingly lopsided trades for this season. For example, let's say Team A realizes he's out of contention this year and has Miguel Cabrera. It'll cost him $55 next year to keep him. While Miguel Cabrera may arguably be the best player in baseball, $55 is probably a fair price rather than a value. Team B is fighting for first this year and has Jean Segura, who he drafted at $1, so it'll cost $6 next year. Miguel Cabrera is a more valuable player than Jean Segura in absolute terms, but the value provided as a keeper, Jean Segura (who will likely go for $20 next year), crushes Cabrera. Since Team A isn't going to win anyway, the trade makes sense.

To an extent that's the fun of keeper leagues. You have to balance your need to compete now vs. compete later. But as the season progresses, more and more teams will be trading for the future, which will make current value of players go way, way, way down as opposed to their value for next season. The problem is that that makes the end of the season for those still competing feel less fair.

the problem isn't the two teams involved.

Don't forget you can always drop or acquire a player with FAAB money. I know for a fact I'd never keep Mike Trout at $60 next year. If I know I'm not going to win this year, I can always drop Mike Trout and add someone I think I might keep next year at $5.

Similarly, you can always get with someone and organize a simultaneous drop. Neither of you are assured of getting the player you want, of course, but since Mike Trout is basically uselesss to DGB, she won't mind dropping him in exchange for even a chance at someone she wants for next year. And of course, if you happen to have the most FAAB money out of realistic people who might fight you for a player, you know you're getting the player.

The difference is that it evens the playing field.

MLB Deadline is July 31. We can certainly discuss changing the trade deadline for next year after the season.

As for adding teams, I'm happy to add them, but not at the expense of current teams, since everyone plans on their keepers based on the knowledge they have now. I'm not sure it's fair to current teams to say "you can keep up to 6, but now SURPRISE you can't." In other words, I think it'd be fair if after keeping up to 6 players, an expansion team has the option of keeping any player at the price he would have been kept (or maybe with a small discount of 2 or 3 dollars per player).

I think stats are a tough thing to alter in a keeper league, but I'm open to it, especially if we're changing the stats in the main league. it's possible that we might require a year lead time to change any statistic category.

As for practical discussion: You may trade keeper rights from the end of our season until probably about a week or two before our draft next year (might just set it to something like March 1 to make it easy). You may also trade money for the next season's auction, up to $20 per person and no team may have more than $320 or less than $240 before exercising keeper rights.

well. by tying I think I ended Aguilas' outside chance of making the playoffs. If we both win next week, Gorc and I will be playing our last game against each other for (I think) the pennant.

oop. looks like if gorc and i both win gorc wins the pennant regardless. because we'll have split our head to head matchups and i think the next rung is number of wins. Canadian Blizzard has come on strong.

For what it's worth, now's the time to acquire anyone in the keeper league you might want for next year. Keep in mind that those who weren't drafted will be drafted for $5 next year, those that were drafted and then dropped will still be acquired for their auction price+$5.

so. i'm up 8 points in my 14 team money league (that LL is still co-manager for). It's actually very close in many categories, so the 8 points could easily evaporate if i'm not careful (for example, I was 4 points up as of this afternoon). I'm shedding all my players I've had this season to add pitchers (still have 40 innings i can pitch). My second place opponent is 11 Ks ahead of me and I have 5 pitchers scheduled for a start tomorrow. I texted him to say that I'm 11 Ks back and starting five, so it'll all come down tomorrow in hopes that he panics and picks up terrible pitchers to try and fend off a K challenge. I have no intention of starting the pitchers I picked up (though they were the best on the FA pool for tomorrow). Is this bad sportsmanship?

yeah. i like this system. it really SHOULD be a big thing to win your division.

my idea was to expand to two wild cards a league, but the 1st wild card would be in a double elimination series and the 2nd wild card would be in a single elim series. In other words, the first wild card would only need to win one, but the second place team would need to win two. but they didn't ask me, strangely enough.

thanks! and to you on yours (at least your Yahoo leagues). You played a part in that win. picking up Jarrod Parker and keeping my team afloat through a ton of May injuries definitely enabled me to win. The 14 points seems like a dominant win and I guess in the annals of history it will be, but as of Saturday the lead was 3 points and my competition could easily cover the distance with good hitting and pitching. Fortunately he did not.

And congratulations to LL and Rhinox. I think next year's keeper will be interesting. We get 6 slots to fill. I think we should look for a 10th (Qwints? Gorc?)

Assuming everyone agrees, I think the best way to go about that is to do our keepers first and then offer Gorc any remaining players at a discount (like maybe draft value + $2 or something)

Tell you what: I'll go through and get everyone's final rosters and do the keeper values for next year in some sort of table. Assuming I don't get frustrated and throw up my hands.

And looks like I spoke too soon. Her firm had more people say yes than expected, so only my wife gets to go (hers is a consulting firm where the vast majority are away Monday-Thursday, and they have a luxury box so they didn't expect to fill it with just consultants, but it looks like they misjudged!)

LL, the league commish finally got around to paying/posting a wrap up. it mentions you, so:
XXX, owner of All Upton My Grilli (112), you will receive $400 for your first-place finish in Squads Toiling to Dominate. Perhaps I should send $200 of it to "Darius Austin," who swooped in to make a series of mysterious add/drops in May before vanishing without a trace? I jest. I know you were on your honeymoon. Which makes your first-place finish all the more impressive. Your team quickly ascended to first and never strayed far from it, despite some serious infield volatility. And even your accidental draft pick, Eric Hosmer, became a useful piece! A fine name as well -- probably the best our league has seen since Monzack's more unorthodox BuckwheatPillow.
I'm fairly certain he thinks your name is fake. Maybe it is. I don't know.

This is what I'm thinking of proposing on that front:

1. March 1st will be the deadline for selecting keepers. Mid-to-late March for the draft.
2. You may choose not to keep one of those selected up to 24-hours before the draft at no penalty.
3. Any further keepers you selected and then choose not to keep up to 24-hours before the draft will come at a $3 penalty (but you'll get the money you would have spent back).

That makes it so that we can start planning our drafts ahead of time, but it accepts that there might be player or players who get majorly injured during Spring Training.

Just as a reminder:
