RULES

Game Rules use Mr. Stoofer rules as a base but are amended (and in some cases reversed!)

[01]
VOTING METHOD
: Votes must be in bold. example:
Vote: Cicero
If you do not bold your vote, it will not be counted. Please be attentive and
Unvote
, if necessary, before casting a new vote. This is not required, but I’d appreciate it.

[02]
LYNCH
: Lynching will require a simple majority of votes. Once a player has reached the necessary majority, any attempts to unvote will be unheeded.

[03]
NO LYNCH
: You may vote: no lynch – unless it is deadline, majority votes of this kind are necessary to end the day without a death.

[04]
DEADLINE:
This game will have mandatory non-retractable deadlines of,at most,3 weeks. As the game whittles down its living membership deadlines may grow shorter.

[05]
DEADLINE LYNCH RULES:
As the At deadline, a person will be lynched if they have a majority of voters voting for them. That means you can be lynched with just one vote if only one person is voting. If no one has a majority of the votes cast, it is a no-lynch.

[06]
NIGHT CHOICES
: Night choices will be expected within 72 hours. If you do not inform me of a night choice I will make it for you and you will not like it.

[07]
LURKING AND NOT POSTING
: Lurking is not an acceptable strategy in this game. Anyone who goes more than 72 hours without posting, without advance warning, is likely to be replaced. (I don't count weekends for this purpose.) I will not be afraid to modkill if necessary. Mafia is a social contract. Everyone is expected to give information and comment to be analysed. If this is uncomfortable for you, consider taking up solitaire instead.

[08]
OUT OF THREAD COMMUNICATION
: The game is not to be discussed outside the thread unless your role specifically states that you may do so – and then only in the manner stated in your role PM. Don’t quote any out-of-thread communications regarding this game in the thread.

[09]
BAH POSTS ARE ALLOWED
: Once your death scene has been posted, you’re dead. However, since I love Bah post you may absolutely make one "Bah" post. It should be short and should contain absolutely no game related opinion or information. Example: "Bah! Go Town!"

[10]
TOO CLEVER BY HALF RULE
: No small or hidden text or obscure codes. Don’t edit/delete previously submitted posts either.

[11]
VACATION? LIMITED ACCESS?
If you anticipate being unavailable for more than a 48-hour period, please post a notice to that effect
in this game thread.
Treat this game as a commitment. Be considerate – don’t leave us hanging.

[12]
FALLIBILITY CLAUSE:
Unlike other mods I am fallible. Please point out any mistakes I make gently. In particular, if I post a vote count that does not accurately reflect your vote, it is your responsibility to correct me -- otherwise your vote may be treated as it appears in the vote count.

[13]
QUESTIONS
: If you have any questions at all, please PM me or post the question in the thread.

[14]
FUN
: Remember, it’s a game and it’s supposed to be fun. Be nice to your fellow players and your mod. I have very low tolerance for abusive posts.

[15]
I've reserved this color for any purposes I might choose. Don't use it, please.

[16] There is at least one vanilla townie in this game and that person's role pm looks like this:
Cicero Inpantsi - Crew (townie). You're a loyal footsoldier of the crew. You may not have any fancy role but you know you hate stoolies and pigs. You need to put your head together with the rest of the crew to vote on which rat to whack. You win when all threats to the crew are eliminated.

CREW MAFIA BEGINS!

The Time: Early Evening

The Place: Mamma Trattoria's Sicilian Fat Factory, New Jersey

Image

You guys are a good tight crew. Your front as a commercial trash collection company gives you lots of flexibility to do the real work of an honest hard working mafia crew: Robbing trucks, running prostitutes, selling drugs, illegal gambling. Lately business couldnt be better. To celebrate, you've all gotten together for a celebratory dinner at Mama
Trattoria's Sicilian Fat Factory - the best old style Sicilian Gourmet restaurant in New Jersey.

As you sit down to eat one of the guys in your crew, "Loyal" Eddie Oregano, looking more haggard than you've ever seen him, starts to speak.

Image

"Fellas" he says "I know today was supposed to be a day of celebration. But unfortunately that's not to be. About 30 minutes ago I got a heads up call from a friend of ours in the DA's office. Apparently I'm going up on a lot of charges. I'm likely to go away for a long time. I might even get...the death penalty. My source tells me that the case they have against me is tight. Really tight. In fact it's the kind of case that they could only make by having a guy... or some guys... on the inside.

Eddie pauses to take a drink of whiskey.

"That's right boys, we've got rats in the pantry."

Another drink. Deeper this time. His hands are visibly shaking as you watch him re-pour.

"Anyway, I know this is the end of the road for me. I ain't goin' back to the joint. I don't like what they did to me there last time and I definitely aint spendin' the rest of my life there, maybe waitin' for them to strap me to some table and stick a needle in my arm. And I ain't given them the chance to work me over and make me talk. You guys are like family to me and I'll be goddamned if I'll let them turn me into a stinkin' rat.

So I know what you guys gotta do to make sure I don't flip. But I ain't gonna make ya do it. I couldnt bear it. I'm sorry. So this is it for me. But you guys gotta find the rats before it's too late. And from what my source tells me too late aint too many nights away. Act fast!"

And with that, you watch transfixed as Loyal Eddie pulls a Sword 9mm pistol from the inside his jacket, puts the barrel in his mouth, and sprays an unfortunately placed Mama Trattoria with a red sauce that means no one's gonna want to eat those plates of linguini she was
carrying anymore.

A stunned silence falls.

...giving someone just enough time to spring up and muffle Mama Trattoria's hysterical screams.

Who you gonna whack?

Image

Save your crew.

Cicero's rule #10 prevented any breadcrumbing.
Rule 10 rejects the use of codes like cryptography to make breadcrumbs, not traditonal breadcrumbs. I'm sorry if that was unclear.

The Fonz replaces Scattered effective immediately.

Players are reminded to review the rules of the game. Particularly Rule 7.

Welcome aboard, Fonz!

Each will be prodded 72 hours after their last post and if posting frequency does not increase I will be seeking replacements as necessary (and, of course, as available, which is always a factor).

===========================
Lieutenant Graves looked up from the report he'd just been handed, incredulous. "Are you shitting me?"

"I warned you about sending a newbie in on this assignment" said Chief Farsum.

"Yeah, Sammy. Look. I don't need I told you so's today. I need a drink. This is the biggest goddamn fuck up- How? I don't even-"

"I know"

The report was blistering. Saunders couldn't handle the pressure of deep cover and he definitely couldn't handle being tied to a pole and punched by wise guys screaming in his face. He broke down crying and admitted he was an undercover cop.

He'd also never heard of a coroner's report this grim before. Apparently, near the end, Saunders had started complaining about a searing pain in his chest. From the looks of things he was on the verge of having a huge, and probably lethal, heart attack. Not wanting to be robbed of their victim by the fates, the crew pulled out some of Mama Trattoria's carving knives and performed some Sicilian First Aid.

They found him in an alley. In several dumpsters.

THE SECOND DAY BEGINS

After disposing of Ennui's body and cursing about how even cops like him should at least try to have *some* honour, the crew goes its separate ways relieved at having such a good start.

The infiltrating pigs go away feigning relief but really feeling that their operation is already in jeopardy. Nothing worse than having the brass send a boy to do a man's job. This was the result. Well - nothing to be done about it now but hit the crew back. Hard and fast.

You all agree to meet at Joey Crow's Salvage yard the next day to continue your...investigation, a place where you don't think you'll be disturbed... and where no one will hear the screams.

Image

Most of you arrive at a decent time but by 3pm you start to notice some No Shows.
Petey
"Ting=)"
Pennotti
and
Sammy
"Llamafluff"
Spaghetti
can't be reached by cell phone either.

A quick round of calling around gets you the story.

Ting=)
and
Llamafluff
, both loyal lowly members of the crew, have been arrested. Anecdotes suggest that Ting=) made a brave but futile attempt to resist arrest and paid for it with the loss of those big white shiny teeth of his.

Image

Rumour is that Llamafluff went along...sheepishly... after some sort of captive barnyard animal was found in his closet, looking very scared and very abused. You always wondered how he got that nickname.
Image

Now you know.

Word is that
Ting=)
is being held at
18th Precinct downtown.
Llamafluff
is being held at
14th Precinct uptown
. Bail isn't going to be posted. You don't plan to see either of them for a very long time. And if you did, you wouldn't trust 'em anyway.

IT IS NOW DAY TWO.

DEADLINE WILL BE MONDAY AUGUST 11TH AT 11:59pm EST

------------------------------------
Leo "Cubsfan" Lingui was irking the members of the crew. He had this little transistor FM radio with a dangly earpiece that seemed constantly glued to his ear. While the crew tried to conduct business Lingui spent his time listening to the game. Discussion was often interrupted by some loud eruption of anger or elation depending on how his boys were doing that inning.

Then it dawned on you. Maybe that transistor radio wasn't a radio at all. It was probably a wire. Cubsfan's not listening act was really all about listening and sending information to his pig buddies! There was only one way to find out. A quick baseball bat to the head. The radio flew from his hand and fell to the ground.

On the next swing the bat connected with his neck and Cubsfan started to choke like his team in a pennant race. One third strike and, sportsfans, this wise guy was outta the game.

An inspection of his body doesn't turn up a badge though. Just some off- track betting slips. And it seems that transistor radio is just a radio. You hear a small tinny voice crackle from the bloody ear bud.

"...swing and a miss..."

DAY THREE BEGINS

Another night passes and you all feel a bit punch drunk from the fact that cubsfan didn't turn out to be a cop. You were all so damn sure.

Well you aren't sure of anything anymore. Who can you trust? Who can anyone trust? You all find yourselves filled with more rage at each other fueled by your fear.

The No Shows for today tell you of a couple of people you could have trusted though.

Vincent "Kison" Fettucine

Image

was taken down in the middle of lunch at a Subway restaurant. Always the joker, as they led him out in cuffs he was heard to yell "this is NOT what I meant when I asked for extra bacon!"

The story of
Mickey "Raider" Manicotti
is worse to hear though. Raider had a girl on the inside named Lola. Lola was an HR gal for the police force.
Every night
he'd call her and woo her with bullshit love promises and she'd
check her police employment database for him
. The database wasn't infallible but you can be sure
some of the cops you were looking for were listed in there
.

Unfortunately, bullshit only flies for so long, and hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Word is that Lola is the chief witness at Raider's Grand Jury Trial.

Cicero In the Rules wrote:Don’t quote any out-of-thread communications regarding this game in the thread.

Just a caution - I'm not verifying or not verifying the veracity of the quotation (because then i might have to verify or not verify all sorts of things said between me and players and that would be bad) but need to note that by putting a phrase from me in quotes, Forbiddenlight technically breached this rule a few posts ago. I'm not remotely inclined to punish this in this case. The phrase itself was very small and I can understand why it was done, but please, as this game goes on be careful of things like that. I don't want anything decided by some innocent slip that I am then compelled to act on. The Ennui situation was enough.

Read the rules and if you are unclear on whether something is ok, ask me before posting. Thanks.

Please don't even joke about this. I wouldn't invite anyone in this game into another game of mine if they did that and that would make me sad because you are all such good players.

Don't muck with the game's mechanism either in an attempt to be clever OR out of exasperation. Just don't.

With 6 Alive 4 just lynched

Accusations flew They flew back and they flew forth. Punches too. Everyone felt a little more bruised with teeth a little bit looser. Secrets were revealed too. Doctors and lawyers, trackers and watchers, pimps and vigs and godfathers too! Who was to be believed in such a mess?

Well... one person you COULD have believed was
Charlie "
Cass
anova" Rigotti- The Crew's Pimp.
Charlie kept a stable of working girls. These girls were good at distracting wise guys and pigs alike.
Each night he could send me the name of one player he'd like to see distracted. Their nightkills and night actions wouldn't go through.
All he ever wanted was for the threats to the crew to be eliminated so that he could keep providing tension relief to fat lonely businessmen. I mean at least that's what he tried to tell you as Matin stood behind him choking him to death with a garotte wire.

Cass Lies Dead

You stare at his corpse and realise the enormity of what you've just done.

"Fuck it" says
Officer Sal
"Darkdude"
Fernandez
. "You already know I'm a cop and I've had enough of this guy. I'm taking him down to 18th precinct." He pulls out handcuffs and approaches
Frances
"Forbiddenlight"
Castelloni
but
Peter
"The Fonz"
Pizza
intervenes wielding a law book.

"I don't care if you are a police officer, you did not identify yourself as such before coming on to these premises and did in so doing effectively create a scenario whereby entrapment becomes very much an issue. In addition, the area in which we are now present is outside the jurisdiction of 18th precinct and-"

- and it all becomes too much for Forbiddanlight, who screams, pulls out a sawed off shotgun and blows a hole right through Darkdude's middle.

"Probable Cause THAT, Son of a bitch!" he says and spits on Darkdude's corpse.

Sergio
"Matin"
Hernandez
and
Brian
"Goatrevolt"
Livio
look at each other shocked and frantically break cover. Acting fast they knock over the last two members of the crew while yelling out "CODE RED!" "I repeat "CODE RED!" They wrestle Fonz and FBL as an army of uniformed
14th precinct
police backup bursts through the door and windows. Fonz tries to yell out a defense for FBL but he's already in custody. He's going to need a lawyer of his own.

Whatever happens next, the Crew as you know it is over.

14th Precinct has cleaned up the streets!

GOATREVOLT AND MATIN ARE HEROES OF THE COMMUNITY! KEEPING THE STREETS OF NEW JERSEY CLEAN FOR GOOD HONEST CITIZENS!

COMMENDATION: 14TH PRECINCT WINS!!!

Thanks to everyone for playing. I hope you all enjoyed it. I know the setup was a bit weird. I consulted a lot of people in order to balance it and I think at the end of the day it was ok but I'd love to hear input and criticism (and compliments).

The genesis of the idea mechanic wise was to have 2 scum teams in a mini. I figured that it would be a refreshing change, and I figured it couldn't have been that much harder or different than a game with 3 scum and a serial killer.

But such a game is definitely considered hard to balance. In particular I was repeatedly told that the basic setup game of 8-2-2 was balanced against the scum and in favor of town - unless it was mountainous. The reason being that while 4 scum teams look daunting to the town, each scum team of two is facing down 10 enemies. And if one of them dies they are basically playing as a serial killer for the rest of the game.

I played with a lot of different mixes of roles. But I wasn't going to do it mountainous. At various times one scum team had a watcher and the other had the tracker. In addition early iterations only had half the scum with bulletproof vests. I got input on the setup from Adel, Mastermind of Sin, Spies5Samantha who some of you know, and finally Mister Stoofer, who suggested giving the 1xBPV to everyone. I wrestled also with whether to let the same scum watch/track and kill as well. Given that having the godfather die would mean also losing the second power role if I didn't let scum do both, I let them.

A lot was done to make the scum competitive while not prejudicing town.

So the final setup ended up being:

- A sane cop who faced off against two godfathers (therefore he could only find two guilties)
- A doctor
- a roleblocker who would block whatever he came in contact with. So he would stop a watch/track AND a kill if done by the same team. So I saw this as a second variant doctor
- A half strength vigilante who would need to pierce the bulletproof vest twice to kill scum, but who, yes would kill town with just one shot.

The two teams being identical was done at Spies5Samantha's suggestion because even giving one of them a watcher and the other a tracker unbalanced them because one could argue watching may be more powerful than tracking. It was my idea to let them watch or track. The idea was to give them a weak version of a role cop. They could know something was going on but not necessarily whether it was town or the other scum team.

Between the Bulletproof vests, the roleblocker, and the doctor I expected a lot of kills to be blocked. That happened sometimes but I must say scum killed vanilla townies with astonishing precision.

I worried about putting in four power roles because I thought it might lock things up for town as they claimed but I just felt the game worked better with four. I kept asking my reviewers if I should review one and which one, but it just plain felt right the way it was. Losing one felt unbalanced against the town.

So there you have it. Let me know any questions or comments.

A couple of things I might have done differently (being a mod means lots of little tiny decisions and as a new mod I didn't always know the right one)

- Maybe I shouldn't have notified FBL that her vigging failed by PM. Just save it for the thread?
- Should I have deleted Ennui's role PM from the thread after I posted it?

The Fonz wrote:Yeah. I think 1 BPV per scumteam was balanced.

Like i said, with BPV all round, the vig is actually negative value for town.
Stoofer disagreed on BPVs. Figured crosskills would have slanted it heavily in favor of town.

EDIT: He did agree with your assessment that the vig was a negative value for town. I PMed him back when he said that and said "and that's a good thing right? Because we were worried about it being slanted against scum. He never got back to me and I went with it.

What might have worked, and it simply didn't occur to me until it was too late, was to have the vigilante be full strength and have the crosskills only affect arrests. But that also worried me in terms of giving town too much power. This was the compromise. Lots of roles that could block things and lots that could wear down the armor. I (and all the reviewers) thought crosskills in this would have really tilted the balance in favor of town.

There were very few blocked crosskills at least partly because 18th precinct played in a way that told 14th precinct exactly who they were.

There was supposed to be vests absorbing kills more than crosskills.

But yeah - at the end, even after all that town death, town still would have won if it had lynched goatrevolt instead of Cass.

forbiddanlight wrote:I love how I am very carefully excluded from any complimenting here out of the last townies. It's fine, I know my play sucked, but I'd also like opinions on how to improve it.
I don't think you are a bad player FBL. You shouldn't be singled out as the problem by any means. Town's play at the end was a bit problematic. I mean, Fonz should have unvoted as soon as he decided against Cass. Cass should never have intimated an investigatory power she didn't possess thus making her look scummy. but that's the nature of being a townie. You are
uninformed
. So shit gets messy.

I would say that you might consider being less impetuous and emotion driven. Maybe go away and count to ten and then come back when deciding things like nightkills and votes. You might have eliminated the darkdude scumteam much earlier if you had shot him instead of going off furious at Llamafluff, for example.

Also, as a general rule I recommend against locking yourself into a vote with a phrase like "I will not be changing my vote again!" because then you really do sort of let your pride overtake your instincts.

And ultimately, look, other than Ennui, scum played quite well. Goatrevolt and matin played a good game. Particularly goatrevolt who manages to look so townie it's scary. Town kept forgetting about Matin and he played under the radar pretty well as well.

And Darkdude - well hell - he was just plain fun to have in the game. I really wish he hadn't been saddled with such a petulant partner. But he kept playing through with a really great attitude. I really want to give him props for that.

Another random thing: I noticed that town didn't seem quite accepting of the fact that it would need Darkdude on its wagon in order to lynch scum at all on the final day. Fonz says Matin was the play but to my mind once Darkdude started volunteering to be on the goatrevolt lynch, and goatrevolt had claimed watcher/tracker, people should have just piled on. FBL shouldn't have gone round and round with Darkdude - just manipulated him. there was no UNIVERSE in which Fonz was going to doc protect a guy alternately claiming bulletproof vest and/or scum. Fonz is really very experienced.

ROLE PMs

The Crew

"Pretty" Micky Manicotti Crew's Investigator which is to say COP (townie with a role)
- you're sleeping with a Police Services HR tech named Lola. You couldnt give a damn about her but you're the sun, the moon and the stars to her. Each night, you can ask her about a wise guy and she'll tell you if they are using an alias and actually a dirty stinking pig. You're confirmed sane and the database is correct. So a pig is a pig. But that doesn't necessarily mean the database is complete. So not a pig doesn't necessarily mean not a pig. Capiche? You win when all threats to the crew are eliminated.

Peter J. Pizza, Esq - Crew's Lawyer which is to say DOCTOR (townie with a role)
- You're a sleazy attorney for the crew but damn you're good. Just because the pigs try to get someone arrested doesn't mean they're gonna succeed. You're amazing with technicalities and if you happen to be visiting with the guy they try to arrest, you'll definitely find a way to make the pigs go home to try to find more evidence. Each night you can send me the name of someone you want to protect from the jail cell. You win when all threats to the crew are eliminated.

Frances "Hothead" Castelloni Crew's VIGILANTE (townie with a role)
- Loyal Eddie was your best friend and you'll be goddamned if you're just going to wait for votes all the time. If you think you've found a pig you're going to shoot them. Each night you can send me the name of someone you think should swim with the fishes and we'll do our best to put them in the river. You win when all threats to the crew are eliminated.

Charlie "Pimpin" Rigotti- Crew's ROLEBLOCKER (townie with a role)
- You are a pimp with a stable of working girls. These girls are good at distracting wise guys and pigs alike. Each night you can send me the name of one player you'd like to see distracted. Their nightkills and night actions won't go through. You win when all threats to the crew are eliminated.

Sammy Spaghetti - Crew (townie)
. You're a loyal footsoldier of the crew. You may not have any fancy role but you know you hate stoolies and pigs. You need
to put your head together with the rest of the crew to vote on which rat to whack. You win when all threats to the crew are eliminated.

Leo Lingui - Crew (townie)
. You're a loyal footsoldier of the crew. You may not have any fancy role but you know you hate stoolies and pigs. You need to put your head together with the rest of the crew to vote on which rat to whack. You win when all threats to the crew are eliminated.

Petey Pennotti - Crew (townie)
. You're a loyal footsoldier of the crew. You may not have any fancy role but you know you hate stoolies and pigs. You need to put your head together with the rest of the crew to vote on which rat to whack. You win when all threats to the crew are eliminated.

Freddy Fettucine - Crew (townie)
. You're a loyal footsoldier of the crew. You may not have any fancy role but you know you hate stoolies and pigs. You need to put your head together with the rest of the crew to vote on which rat to whack. You win when all threats to the crew are eliminated.

14th Precinct

Tommy Tortellini - AKA Sergio Hernandez (14th Precinct AKA PIG SCUM!)
Hi pig! You are working undercover with Ronnie Ravioli - AKA Brian Livio - AKA _________ and have infiltrated this mafia crew. Each night you may send me the name of a person who you and your partner have chosen to arrest.

You want the crew out of business. Dead or arrested. You also want to make sure that YOU get the final collar. So if there's anyone else working this case, you want them in a jail cell and out of commission too. After all your career is at stake. You win when everyone but 14th Precinct is eliminated.

As per the usual mafia rules, you can speak with your partner during the night phase but not during the day phase.

Other Powers:

INVESTIGATION IMMUNE GODFATHER - You are so deep undercover that you aren't even on record as a pig anymore. So if anyone goes sniffing around to find out the truth about you, they'll be outta luck. Your also the senior officer, so if you and your partner disagree on who to arrest, you make the call.

ONE SHOT NIGHTKILL IMMUNITY - You have a standard issue thin bulletproof vest on that will stop a bullet. But it won't stop a second one. Cheap standard issue piece of crap. Actually, you're able to stop any nightkill action once no matter what its form. Ninjitsu, fast talking, cheap bulletproof vest. Whatever you have it works. You have one shot nightkill immunity.

Thanks much for the kind words Cass. Glad you enjoyed it.

That's not abnormal FBL. In fact it isn't even bad. It can be an asset if you learn to control it. Remember you don't want to get lynched OR nightkilled. Scum don't NK the people they think can get lynched. The trick is to pull yourself out of your scumminess and command trust at the right moment.

I don't think I'd let the scum do No Kill. Has the potential to slow the game down a lot. I think games here often go on too long and players actually like 'em faster and bloodier.

But I agree about the flavor text. There was no need to give the "some of the cops" flavor when Raider died. I should have written "at least some of the cops" or been silent on the issue. Sorry about that.

There are actually a lot of things about this game that I would do differently if I had it to do again. But that's why experience is a great teacher. Regardless, it was over within three weeks and everyone seems to have had a good time. So overall, not too bad.

Return to “Completed Mini Normal Games”
