Supermini Time Travel Mafia - Timeline Reshuffle!

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Wed Feb 02, 2005 4:53 pm

Post by mathcam »

Currently Alive (4)
:

Coron
Uraj45
StD
Mr. Flay

Currently Dead (5)
:
Lazarusmoth (town, lynched day 1)
Rolando (scum, killed by scum night 2)
big_kahunia (town, killed by scum night 2)
Stewie (town, lynched day 3)
Narninian (town, killed by scum night 3)

Hey all, I need half a dozen or so guinea pigs for my supermini time travel mafia, which will help me design roles and work out kinks for my upcoming time travel mini. So if you're active and have an eye for some of the weirder mafia variants out there, step on up and give this a try.

The Game:
The game will be mafia-based, i.e. a town trying to kill a mafia group and vice versa. Lynching will remain the same as always. The game will be, as almost all of my games are, split motive/role. This means that a person's
motive
(i.e. mafia or town) is independent of their
role
(daytime or nighttime abilities).

Time Travel
: As in Cuban Smoker's game of the same name (which players should consider reading), the way time travel is incorporated into the game will be to allow players to make night choices on nights other than the current one. For example, on night 2, the mafia may go to night 4 and kill someone. That person won't wake up dead until the morning after night 4. Similarly, a doc can go back to night one to protect someone who was killed then, which will (barring other factors) bring them back to life.

Information
: The one nuisance, from a time-travel perspective, of Cuban's game, was that information persisted even if the timeline had shifted. So if a cop revealed a scum on day 2, and the mafia went back and killed him night 1, the information the cop presented would still be out there, which is a "glitch" in time. I propose to eliminate this by redistributing
motives
(not roles) each time a change in the timeline occurs that would affect information of this sort. What
can't
be affected is "the current time" in the sense that we never jump forwards or backwards a day, and choices made in the future. Thus cop investigations made for night 4 will be delivered night 4, regardless of intermediary time-changes.

Other Notes
: By signing up for this game you agree to be guinea pigs. I've got a bunch of the details worked out, but there are undoubtedly kinks. You may have to endure some rules-made-up-on-the-fly mid-game, and it's possible the game will come to a screeching halt because of something I didn't think of. Nonetheless, I think it should be a lot of fun.

So sign up!

odd. I could try, however each day would need to be quite longer. As mafia could you in affect, have killed everyone night 1? or am I just confused.

/in to get a spot, and now I'm off to reading your post to see if I change my mind.

EDIT: confirm that. And also put me up for the actual game when you are done testing on us.

You should put a disclaimer in your game though: "This game was not tested on animals. Just other people"

In principal, I suppose. But docs could also protect every player night 1.

Sounds fun, cam. Count me in as a guinea piggy.

Okay, I'm anxious to start, and I think 1 mafia out of 5 players is a good way to do it...we'll wait for a fifth.

/in if there is room.
As far as the cops go, you could make them trackers and rewrite the night scenes of their follows. Then, the "good" or "evil" cop results wouldn't affect the game. Though, I'm not sure if that is the perfect solution or if there is one.

Okay, we can do 8. I just have to think about how to rearrange roles to make this work.

In any case, signups are closed, and roles should go out this afternoon.

Thanks for giving it a shot everyone!

Aw, how could I say no to you, Mr. Flay? You're in.

I want everyone in the game to think of this more of a mish-mash game than a mafia game, almost a role-playing game under the direction of a moderator (me) who wants to see a fun game.

A couple of things to remember:

1) Your goal is to be on the winning team when the game is over. The game will end if at any point everyone alive is on one team, even if there are pending future actions that would change this.
2) Your role is known to only yourself, and does not change throughout the game. So you can role-claim if you want, but keep in this mind that this decision will affect you for the rest of the game.
3) In terms of gameplay, think of this is as a mafia game. I don't care if you banter at night, since I can't lock the thread, but don't post anything game-relevant.
4) Have fun with this, and don't forget you're my guinea pigs. :)

Roles going out. Night choices should consist of
what
you are doing, and
when
you are doing it. Tonight is night 1, and there is no going back to night 0 or to negative nights.

Okay, roles are out. This should be nuts. I'll let you know when night choices are in, and we'll start day 1, assuming the universe hasn't exploded in a logical paradox by then.

There are 2 mafia and 7 townies, and one's mafia/townness was random and independent of your motive. Mafia should choose who should do the killing for each kill.

Please submit night choices
. Please make sure night choices are complete, including when and who, and anything else your role PM specifies.

Okay, and we're done with night choices. Everyone wakes up day 1, and it'll take 5 to lynch.

First Causality Question: Assume we wake up Day Two to seven alive. If the Doc goes back to Night One to protect the person who was nightkilled, we would suddenly have 8 alive on D2, and thus a majority for lynch of 5, not 4. Does that mean the lynchee comes back to life too, since they only had 4 votes?

Random Vote:

Ah, yes. Greetings everyone. Indeed it is day. As you are well aware we have some dangers to contend with. To put it simply, at least one of us here is associated with that dreadful orgonization known as The Mafia. My team has recently made an astronomical breakthrough enabling us to do the unthinkable: travel through time. This should help us significantally in combating the efforts of the mafia. I can only hope that they haven't gotten a hold of this technology as well. . .
In any event, let us begin. A well designed and thoroughly tested theory states that when the fourth dimension is disturbed and/or distorted, time tends to simplify other factors in order to counteract this added complexity and maintain equilibrium. The most frequent case of such a shift is based upon categorization by name. Thus, the role of "mafia" would tend to shift towards a username that starts with the letter M. Our most esteemed Mr. Flay happens to meet this criterium. By my calculations, the probability of Mr. Flay being associated with the Mafia is approximately 22.23 percent with an uncertainty of + or -.01%, which is a larger percentage than any of the rest of us have. Therefore, I am going to
Vote: Mr. Flay
.
I am eager to hear the opinions of the rest of you, so that we may compare notes.
*Uraj sits down on a chair placed a considerable distance away from Mr. Flay*

Thank you for reminding me...we are going to follow the convention from Cuban Smoker's game (which I really like) that all dead people must send in a choice of a vote for every day, by the end of that day. This will represent what they
would
have done if they were alive, and will help resolve many sticky problems like the one you describe. So the resolution to your question is "It depends on how the new person voted while he was dead."

Oh, and just a note, I won't answer all causality question...some of them will quite simply just have to remain mysteries of the game mechanics.
