Mini 166: Dodecamafia - Game over!

Post Post #0 (isolation #0) » Fri Mar 04, 2005 11:37 am

Post by Mr. Flay »

They say that tabletop gaming is dead; instead of D&D, it's MMORPGs. Instead of Scrabble, it's http://www.scrabble.com. Instead of Mafia, it's https://www.mafiascum.net. They might be right, but that doesn't stop the die-hard players from trying to roll a "20" and bring back the glory days.

Which is why you're here today: Your LAN party has been crashed by some unsavory, socially maladjusted Luddites who want to bury you under a hex grid and loot your corpse for magic items. Are you going to let them spoil your slightly less unsavory, slightly less socially maladjusted fun? Unfortunately your gaming group meets at an apartment complex in California, so there will be rolling blackouts between the times you get to chase somebody out of the group; your computers will survive by virtue of backup power systems, but you might not. Try to use the time while the lights are on to the fullest, before it's too late.

Game Over. Town wins!

Players (2):
------------
The_Machine86, a Night Watchman, stuck it out until the end.
Locus Cosecant, an E-mail Junkie, stuck it out until the end.

NPCs (10):
------------
Coron - an Orderly Orderly, had his screen broken Night One.
Iammars - an Atypical Gamer, left in disgust Day One.
niMic - an Orderly Orderly, had his power supply removed Night Two.
Dmi - a
Dice-rolling Mafioso
, found something better to do Night Two.
milkman - a Regular Gamer, was forced out of the group Day Two.
Internet Stranger - a Helpful Gamer, got a better offer Night Three.
Lt. Origen - a
Dice-rolling Mafioso
, was pushed out the door Day Three.
Dragon Phoenix - an E-mail Junkie, lost his power cord Night Four.
help im a bug - a
Cunning Serial LARPer
, lost in Rock-Paper-Scissors Night Four.
CoolBot - a
Dice-rolling Mafioso
, was sent away Day Four.

Rules
(stolen from Werebear, who isn't around to defend them):
  • Days will last as long as they need to. If discussion lags, I will impose a deadline. If discussion picks up, the deadline will be rescinded. The last part only happens once.
  • Votes must be in
    bold
. If you do not bold your vote, it will not be counted. Unvotes are polite but not strictly required.
  • Once a player has reached the necessary majority to lynch, the day is over. Unvoting them will not save their life. You may talk until the night scene is posted.
  • No lynches
are allowed, they require the same number of votes as a lynch.
  • The game is not to be discussed outside of the thread unless you are told you may do so explicitly in your role PM.
  • Once your death scene has been posted, you're dead. Please, no posting ideas or theories. You may make one post, in a bad "medieval" accent, with no additional game information.
  • Don't edit/delete previously submitted posts. The dice don't lie; you must accept the first roll. Post again and correct it if you feel the need.
  • Don't quote your role PM in thread.
  • Night will last about 72 hours. The first time you miss a deadline, no choice will be made. The second time, someone from your side will die. It might be you.
  • If you're going to be gone a significant amount of time, let everyone know out of courtesy.
  • Mod = DM = GM = God. And we all know what happens when God is proven wrong, right? That's right, the universe packs up its bags and goes home. Let me know, however, if you think your eyes might be seeing things that appear to be errors.
  • The Mod works in mysterious ways. Don't assume to know the will of Mod.
  • Whether you're playing with dice or a LAN connection, it's a game. Have fun, don't be a complete jerk to each other, etc.

Just as you all get together for your regular gaming session, the lights go out. It's California; you're used to that. What you're not used to are all the new faces in your group; some of them you've never seen before.

Might as well kick back and relax until the lights come back on, unless you've got something better to amuse yourself with. Just as the lights flicker out, you hear the soft plastic sound of dice rolling across the floor...
Original Roll String: 12d12 (STATIC)
12 12-Sided Dice: (1, 8, 3, 6, 10, 2, 10, 5, 3, 5, 7, 2) = 62

That's quaint. People who actually game with dice and pen and paper instead of Radeon 5000SX video cards and Pentium VI processors. You wonder why they're here in the first place...

It is now night. Please get your choices in by Wednesday, March 9th at 11:59pm.

Just as the lights come back on, you hear a *crackle*sizzle* from somewhere in the room. Upon further investigation, Coron discovers that his computer screen has been stabbed repeatedly with a Swiss Army knife. His medical training will be of no help on this one; he packs up his things in a neat fashion and leaves the apartment.

Coron - an Orderly Orderly, has been disconnected from the gaming session.

It would appear that someone in your new group doesn't like computer gaming as much as you thought. Now your job is to figure out who, and force them out so you can get back to what you were doing,
i.e.
fragging monsters and each other.

It is now Day One.
With 11 around, it will take 6 to lynch.

As you try to get down to the stated purpose of your gathering - that is, gaming - it becomes clear that the strange incident with Coron's monitor has rattled everyone. The group's mood shifts immediately to that suspicious character, the
girl
who likes to game. "What's she really doing here?" "Who ever heard of a girl who liked computer games?"

In disgust, she packs up her iBook and leaves before the mood gets even uglier.

Iammars, an Atypical Gamer, has left the group.

Just as the door shuts on Iammars, you hear that...
sound
again:
Original Roll String: 10d12
10 12-Sided Dice: (10, 7, 4, 2, 10, 5, 5, 5, 11, 7) = 66

When the power comes back up, you all look around to find quite a scene. niMic is peering into the back of his computer, where everything has been unscrewed and the power supply has been neatly removed. Unfortunately, no one has one to match it, so he's forced to go home early.
"Oh well, I should have been studying anyway.."

As he packs up his computer and his Human Physiology books, you notice that Dmi's seat is unoccupied already. His computer, an old 486 not worth trying to play Tetris on, was obviously a decoy to hide the 17 gaming books in his overnight bag. A hastily scribbled note among scattered dice on his chair is the only clue:
"Got a date... 's sister.... later!
"

niMic - an Orderly Orderly, has had his power supply yanked.
Dmi - a Dice-rolling Mafioso, found something more compelling to do.

Piffle on these losers with their real lives. If they can't handle the pressure of 90fps high-intensity shoot-em-ups, then let them leave!

It is now Day Two.
With 8 still around, it will take 5 to lynch.

The group's suspicions remain highly focused on the gamer who drinks milk instead of Mountain Dew or Diet Coke. Possibly because milk might spoil in the occasional blackouts (like the one that just occurred as dark fell), they decide to tell milkman it's time to go.

milkman, a Regular Gamer, has been forced out of the group.

As you toss out the last of his empty cartons, you hear dice rolling softly:
Original Roll String: 7d12
7 12-Sided Dice: (10, 4, 9, 5, 11, 1, 7) = 47

During the night, you all hear some cursing and a clank across the floor. Wondering what it is proves useless during the blackout, but as the lights come on you're distracted by something much more emphatic.

"I didn't know she was your sister, I swear! I was only trying to... forget it, I'm out of here..."

The door slams behind him as IS leaves to go do something else, nearly crushing his laptop in his fury.

Internet Stranger - a Helpful Gamer, has gotten a better offer.

The clank you heard earlier seems to be a beaten and scratched Swiss Army Knife, kicked under Dragon Phoenix's desk. Where did it come from? Who does it belong to? What will you do now?

It is now Day Three.

And so, with startling speed, Dragon Phoenix and CoolBot join the group in pushing Lt. Origen out the door. As they toss his stuff after him, a

Listening to the power company workers outside, you hear something in the room, just snippets of conversation:

"...are you doing here?"

"..ame thing you are.."

"We can't both..."

"ow do we solve it?"

A few dull thwacks, a muttered curse, and someone slips out the front door, with the parting shot
"You cannot destroy me, I'm immortal!"

help im a bug - a
Cunning Serial LARPer
, lost in Rock-Paper-Scissors.

Shortly after he leaves, the lights come up. Dragon Phoenix looks around and utters a cry of dismay.
"My power cord...it's gone!"

"So? We've got lots of computers not being used now..."

"Not for my computer - for my PHONE! And now the battery is all run down!"

And with that, to everyone's surprise, he packs up his things and shuffles out the door, mumbling...(or is that crying?) to himself.

Dragon Phoenix, an E-mail Junkie, had his power cord stolen.

It is now Day Four.

ROLES
---------------------------
In case you didn't notice, each role started with a letter of D-O-D-E-C-A-H-E-D-R-O-N. 12 players, 12 letters, 12 faces on a die.

* 3 "D"s - Dice-rolling Mafia. [talk and kill at night as a group] -CoolBot, Dmi, Lt. Origen.
You are a part of the Dice-rolling Mafia! (cue dramatic music here). During a blackout you may communicate with your partners _______ and ________, and decide whose lucky number has come up and who gets to roll them. PM me with your choice after you have decided, as well as who will perform the deed. When the lights are on, you try to look like anybody else. You win when everyone but your side is dead.
* 2 "O"s - Orderly Orderly. [protect] - Coron and niMic
You are an Orderly Orderly, very organized at your job at the local hospital; you're not finished with your medical training, but you may be able to offer some hope of saving them from a critical wound. PM me with who you'd like to roll up in bandages during the blackouts, if anyone. When the lights are on, your job is to discover who the scum are and vote for them. You win when only people on your side remain.
* 2 "E"s - E-mail Junkie (Mason). [communicate at night] - Dragon Phoenix and Locus Cosecant
You are an E-mail Junkie, and since it takes two, you're not alone. During a blackout you may communicate with _____ by text messaging them on your cell-phone (PM). When the lights are on, your job is to discover who the scum are and vote for them. You may not communicate by PM when the lights are on, or if one of you is dead. You win when only players on your side remain (this includes the rest of the town ).
* 1 "C" - Cunning Serial Killer. [kill at night solo] - help im a bug
You are a Cunning Serial Killer, and you're on nobody's side but your own! When a blackout hits, send me a PM with who you'd like to try to kill. When the lights are on you should try to look like anybody else and let suspicion roll off of you. You win when everyone else is dead! Muahahaha!
Postscript: I decided this role would be a LARPer; it merely added "drama" flavor to his attacks.
* 1 "A" - Atypical Gamer. - Iammars
You're an Atypical Gamer; want to know why? Because you're female! Besides the power that may imply over your poorly socialized friends, the only action you get is to vote while the lights are on and find out who's side the lynching victim is on, hoping they're scum. Roll yourself up into bed when the lights go out, for you have no night actions. You win when only pro-town players remain.
* 1 "H" - Helpful Gamer. - Internet Stranger
You are nothing but a Helpful Gamer, trying to determine what side people are on and vote for them while the lights are on. During a blackout, you might as well roll over and get some sleep, for you have no choices or actions. You win when only the pro-town players remain.
* 1 "R" - Regular Gamer. - milkman
You're just a Regular Gamer, which means you have no actions during a blackout, so you might as well roll over and get some rest. While the lights are on, you're trying to discover who is not on your side and vote for them. You win the game if the pro-town players are the only ones remaining.
* 1 "N" - Night Watchman. [following 'cop'] - The_Machine86
You're a Night Watchman, which means you're a little bleary-eyed and sidetracked. This is because you go out during the rolling blackout periods, back to doing your job. Send me a PM with who you'd like to trail after, and I'll let you know if they do anything noteworthy.
When the lights come back on, you must not oversleep or you will be unable to put the 1st vote on someone; your first post of the day must come within 24 hours of the lights coming on, though you don't have to vote immediately in that post. You may use/tell any information you have gained about them, though, and once someone else votes for the person you want, you are free to do so. You win when all of the scum are dead and you can finally get some rest.

SPECIAL NIGHT FEATURES
---------------------------------
A lot of people wondered what the dice-rolling was all about as dark fell. To tell the truth: not too much. It changed a few results of night actions down the line, but largely was there for flavor in line with the 'gaming' theme. All roles get a critical failure on a roll of 1, critical success on a roll of 12.

Nd12 in thread for all surviving players at dark, apply each down the line, send PMs as appropriate.

Mafia: 1 means kill fails, 12 means 200% chance of success.
Orderly: 1 means the target dies of complications, 12 means 200% success.
E-mail junkie: 1 means their server is down [can't send messages, only receive; send them to Mod instead], 12 means they may text message once during the day, by sending it to the Mod for relaying.
Serial Killer: 1 means kill fails, 12 means 200% chance of success.
Night watchman: 1 means investigation fails utterly, 12 means they learn their role and guilt/innocence, target, etc.
Townie: They get a free night protection on a 12 (in the bathroom), no posting ability for that day on a 1 (still in the bathroom).

H Internet Stranger - died Night Three.

D Lt. Origen - lynched Day Three.
R milkman - lynched Day Two.
O niMic - died Night Two.

NIGHT ACTIONS
-----------------------
Night One

niMic protected help im a bug.
Coron saved Locus Cosecant from an attack by help im a bug.
Lt. Origen eliminated Coron for the mafia.
The_Machine86 investigated Dragon Phoenix, finding him doing nothing but tapping on his cell phone.
milkman rolled a 12; he would have been 'in the bathroom' had anyone targeted him.
Day One

The_Machine86 violated his posting restriction, and therefore his vote for Lt. Origen didn't count.
The town lynched Iammars with (her) own help casting the sixth vote.
Night Two

Dragon Phoenix rolled a 1; had he sent any text messages, they would have been delayed until the lights came back on due to a "server outage". He happened to be out of town during that time anyway, so it didn't matter.
niMic's rolled a 12; his protection of Internet Stranger would have been 200% effective if needed.
help im a bug rolled a 12; his attack on Dmi was 200% effective! Err, yeah.
The_Machine86 investigated Internet Stranger, and found him asleep every time he checked.
Lt. Origen eliminated niMic for the mafia, getting rid of the other protection role.
Day Two

The town lynched milkman.
Night Three

CoolBot rolled a 1; his attack on Dragon Phoenix failed when he dropped his Swiss Army knife.
help im a bug eliminated Internet Stranger.
The_Machine86 investigated Lt. Origen, finding him poring over treasure tables and rolling dice maniacally.
Day Three

The town lynched Lt. Origen on The_Machine86's investigation, with his partner casting the deciding vote.
Night Four

No special rolls.
help im a bug got rid of Dragon Phoenix.
CoolBot eliminated help im a bug all by himself.
The_Machine86 survived the night unscathed, surprisingly, and targeted Locus Cosecant, finding him tapping rapidly on his cell phone in the dark.
Day Five

CoolBot lynched by the remaining town.

*** Since this was my first modding of a game, I'm curious what feedback people have on my performance (you can comment here or by PM). I didn't expect the role names being 'flavored' to throw people off as much as it did, but you all figured it out pretty well once the Night Watchman came out with his results. I'm not sure if the scum left him alive in the end on purpose or not; I was fully expecting a Prisoner's Dilemma with a Mason, a Mafioso, and a Serial Killer in the endgame!**

Also, I caught myself in a bind by making an off-the-cuff decision to not 'kill' people at night, but simply eliminate them. I failed to account for how much suspicion that would place on the Orderlies when they came out, however since they were picked off quickly by Lt. Origen, it never really mattered much...

Because we were under a blackout? I didn't make the messages precisely the same for DP & LC, but they were substantially about text messaging on their phones.

help im a bug, you probably lucked out by staying low-profile and having one of your kills blocked, because then you could have played the vigilante card, presuming you didn't get killed at night like you did.

I find it very interesting that both scum assumed the other one would hit the cop Night Four...

Anyway, thanks for a good game with *no replacements* and a steady pace, all of you! I was really alarmed at how fast the first two lynches went, and how even another '**** Gamer' was willing to lynch milkman for his claim on Day Two.
