GAME RULES

General

01. This is a game, it's supposed to be fun. Make sure you have fun, but please don't ruin the fun of others.

02. Players are required to know the rules. Whenever a rolepm contradicts the rules, the rolepm applies. Because of this, players are also required to read their rolepm.

03. Any questions to the mod should be asked through pm. Questions in the game thread may not be answered.

04. The mod is only human, and can make mistakes. If you believe you've spotted a mistake by the mod, please let him know.

05. The mod reserves the right to act in the way he deems best for the game. In exceptional circumstances, he could take actions that actually contradict these rules.

06. Only the mod and players who are alive in the game are allowed to post in the game thread. No bah posts allowed.

07. It is not allowed to talk about this game outside of the game thread, except with the mod. This includes talking with people who aren't in the game!

08. It is also not allowed to use coding, small or invisible text to hide information in your messages inside the thread. (note that coding includes simple codes such as hiding a word in the first letters of each paragraph of a post)

09. Do not quote any private conversations with the mod inside the thread. Do not discuss formatting of such conversations either.

10. Not posting is unacceptable. Players are expected to post at least once every 48 hours. If you are unable to do so, please inform us through the Vacation/Limited Access thread. If you do not post for 48 hours without prior informing, you will receive a prod. Not posting for 24 hours after that, or being prodded twice during a game day, will result in a replacement.

11. Players are not allowed to edit or delete posts they made in the game thread.

12. Any action that is illegal to do, is also illegal to fake.

The rules of Mafia

13. The game of mafia consists of days and nights. This game starts with day. During the day, the thread is open for posting, during the night the thread is closed.

14. In the game, players can die. A player has died (and should therefore stop posting) as soon as the mod has posted that that player died. Dead players can still win. Dead players can't use any abilities they have.

15. Each day, the players vote on someone to lynch. A lynched player will die. For convenience of the mod and other players, voting should be done in the format

Vote: Player Name

. Votes can be withdrawn by unvoting, in the format

Unvote: Player Name

. A vote or unvote will be counted if, after reading the post, the mod believes there was intent to vote.

16. As soon as a mayority of votes (more then half the number of votes) agrees on a person to lynch, that decision stands. Vote changes after that will no longer be counted.

17. It is also possible to decide not to lynch anyone. Votes for this decision should read

Vote: No Lynch

. It requires a mayority of votes for a no lynch to take place.

18. Each game day will last until the mod posts that the day has ended. This happens if the players have made a decision on a lynch, or when the deadline hits, whichever comes first. Each day, deadline hits after a number of days equal to 2*[number of living players]. If no decission has been made at deadline, the game will end in a no lynch.

19. Likewise each night will last until the mod posts that the night ends. A night lasts at least 48 hours. If a player has a nightchoice, their rolepm tells what happens if they do not send it in during the night.

20. The game ends as soon as anyone has fullfilled his or her win condition, or if there have been three day/night (or night/day) cycles without a death, or if everyone has died.

21. At the end of the game, all players who have fullfilled their wincondition win, and all players who haven't fullfilled their wincondition lose.

The citizens of Confidence were proud people. They had built their houses themselves, fending of indians and wild animals alike to carve themselves a home. It was hard work, but they liked their lives, their freedom.

Then one night...

Growls and howling, shouting, gunshots. By the sound of it, two armies used the peaceful hamlet as their battlefield. The villagers grabbed their pitchforks and rushed outside to defend their house and hearth. The battling parties were gone, though. All that was left were two dead bodies.

Bob's body was almost beyond recognition. Bite and scratch wounds all over. Someone had even decided to take a couple of bites out of him. But how did someone in Confidence get a golden tooth? And why did he have a revolver lying next to him?

When compared to Bob, Ben seemed to have died almost peacefully. The only thing that had happened to him was that he was hit by several bullets from different sides. Judging by his incredibly strong muscles, the thick hairy hide, the pointed snout and long teeth, he deserved it though.

Appearantly, Confidence had two significant problems. Luckily the citizens of Confidence were perfectly able to deal with it. They were going to find those scum, and lynch 'em!

Bob has been killed night 0. He is now dead. He was a Mafia Godfather.

Ben has been killed night 0. He is now dead. He was an Alpha Werewolf.

I will, yes. Confirming means telling the moderator that you have read the rules, that you have read your rolepm, and that you're ready to play. I noted a specific way of confirming in the role pm to make sure that a player doesn't only say that he has read his role pm, but actually did so. By confirming in thread, Lowell has not yet shown me that he read his rolepm. I therefore don't know if he actually has met the requirements for playing.

Yes, I have realized that. However, his response has not been within 24 hours of me sending his prod, nor has he made any attempt to convince me that his inactivity was a one time occurence. I have no guarantee whatsoever that he'll follow the activity rules in the future.

I expect my players to post at least once a day. In a game this size, I can't afford to have all other players wait for one player to post. Daniel went at least two full days without posting, that's why he's being replaced.

No activitycheck, because a lynch just ended the day. Any unresponded prods will not lead to replacements.

The villagers were confident that they were able to handle these threats. They were far less confident when it came to actually determining who the threats were, though. Discussions became loud and heated, accusations flew this way and that. As the day went on, slowly but surely a consensus was reached.

"Chronopie's a dirty scumbag!", one villager shouted. "I've never trusted him!" someone else responded. Suddenly, a mob formed, dragging their loudly protesting victim to the nearest tree. Some eager hands provided the rope, and Chronopie decided not to fight the inevitable. Shortly afterwards, a limp body was all that remained of him.

That limp body didn't suffer any strange transformations. In fact, it seemed completely normal. A thorough search of his clothes also didn't reveal anything unusual. An old clay pipe and a bent nail could hardly be considered weapons. It seemed that the villagers had made a mistake.

Chronopie has been lynched day 1. He is now dead. He was a Pro-town Vanilla Townie.

Tired and disappointed, they went to bed. Being outside at night with such scum roaming through the village was way too dangerous. Still, they feared what they would see when dawn would come.

Day 1 has ended, it is now night. Night 1 will last at least till sunday the 30st of may, 1 am GMT+1. It is likely that the night will last slightly longer though, because I may not be awake at that time.

They went to bed dreading what would come. Who would be killed by those foul beasts, human or otherwise? The night was again filled with howling and gunshots, but only in the morning did the fair citizens of confidence leave the safety of their houses to check who had survived the night.

Luckily for them, that was almost everyone. Only Vi didn't show up when the rooster called. The whole village went to look for him. Pretty soon, someone found his body, and it was obvious then why he didn't show up. People who are bitten to death and clawed to pieces don't usually attend village meetings.

Vi has been killed night 1. He is now dead. He was a Pro-town Vanilla Townie.

Relieved to see only a single death, discussions soon started again. After all, there were still scum to kick out of the town.

Night 1 has ended, day 2 has begun. Deadline for day 2 is tuesday, 13th of july 2010, 10.00 am GMT

foilist13, Nachomamma8 and Pomegranate have not posted since sunday 5 pm GMT+1, without having announced Limited Access. This means there has been 48 hours where the game was open but they didn't post. They will be prodded. It could be that they were planning to post on the day the forum was closed for moving, however. Because of this, their prods won't count against their max. 1 prod per day limit.

The deadline is the maximum time by which you have to reach a lynch. It is intended to make sure this game will eventually finish. It is taken pretty long, to guarantee that there is plenty of time to discuss whatever needs to be discussed, and to make sure that someone can keep playing even if they have to go away for a week. The day doesn't have to go to deadline, however. Nothing is stopping you from lynching someone before deadline hits. If you fail to reach a consensus on a lynch (and therefore fail to end the day), clearly there is more to be discussed and the day shouldn't end yet. I see no need to shorten the deadline.

However, if 3/4th of the active players wants shorter deadlines, I'm willing to shorten the deadlines in this game to 1.5*[number of players alive], which would place deadline for day 2 at july 2nd.

Nachomamma8 showed intent to continue playing, and convinced me that his failure to respond to a prod was a one time occurence due to the forum move. Because I hadn't found a replacement for him, he will continue playing.

The second day after the discovery of the threats to Confidence, the villagers were more careful. Several citizens were accused, thoroughly discussed, and left alone.

Shrinehme wasn't so lucky. Continually, accusations came back to him. Slowly but surely, more and more people believed in his guilt, till eventually more then half the village was going after him. Shortly afterwards, a second body was dangling next to Chronopie.

When everyone had calmed down again, and decided to actually check their suspicions, it became clear that those suspicions had again been wrong. Shrinehme was nothing more then a simple farmer. And sunset was rapidly approaching. Soon, it would be too dangerous for honest villagers to be outside.

Shrinehme has been lynched day 2. He is now dead. He was a Vanilla Townie.

Day 2 has ended, it is now night. Night 2 will last at least till monday the 21st of june, 11 am GMT+1.

The morningsun peeked over the horizon. Fragile rays of sunlight explored the countryside, slowly touching everything like the fingers of a searching hand.

They found the freshly dug grave for Vi, the victim of the night before. They touched the tree on the edge of the village, and the two bodies dangling from it. They visited each of the houses of Confidence in turn, waking the villagers. And just like the villagers of Confidence would shortly afterwards, they discovered several gruesome sites.

In the eastern part of Confidence, the body of Spyrex lay deserted in the street. Several gunwounds explained why he wasn't moving. A thorough search of the body only revealed a very peculiar badge, showing a square and compasses of some sort. Appearantly, he had just come back from a secret meeting when he was attacked.

Spyrex has been killed night 2. He is now dead. He was a Pro-town mason.

Spyrex' wasn't the only body idly lying around though. LynchMePlease could be found in front of his house, bitten to bits. Neither his bible nor his rosary could protect him from the horrible attack. Such a faithful member of the community will surely leave others mourning.

LynchMePls has been killed night 2. He is now dead. He was a Pro-town monk.

And it didn't even stop there. Nhammen could be found in the center of the village, right next to the well. Someone had slit his throat, efficient, without making a fuss. In Nhammen's pocession, an odd variety of objects was found. Several musical instruments, various pieces of clothing, it was enough to keep an army entertained. Surely Nhammen knew how to draw attention.

Nhammen has been killed night 2. He is now dead. He was a Pro-town roleblocker.

Taking care of the deaths took the villagers well into the morning. Only after three fresh graves had been dug did the discussions start again.

After a very rough night, discussions became much more agitated. If the citizens of Confidence didn't solve the problems in their town soon, they would be in serious trouble.

Unfortunately for them, Socrates, who was strung up that evening, wasn't part of the problems. Which meant they had yet another night to fear.

Socrates has been lynched day 3. He is now dead. He was a Vanilla Townie.

Day 3 has ended, it is now night. Night 3 will last at least till wednesday, the 7th of july, noon GMT+1.

Confidence was dark. No light was lid in any of the houses. In some, it was dark because their owners were vast asleep. Others were dark because their owners slept forever. And some were dark because what happened there was best kept in the dark.

Confidence was far from silent. The wind whispered through the grainfields, a horse whinnied softly. Two pairs of footsteps. One pair confidently taking their owner where he wanted to go, one pair following along, hardly making any noise. A gunshot. Only one pair of footsteps, quickly taking their owner away from the scene of crime.

Next morning, the citizens of Confidence had one more dead to bury. Like SpyreX, Faraday wore the square and compasses.

Faraday has been killed night 3. He is now dead. He was a pro-town mason.

After a relatively quiet night, the villagers came together again. One third of their number gone, and still not any closer to finding the culprits, their confidence started to fall.

For a change, the citizens of Confidence managed to get themselves worked up to a decission surprisingly quickly. It wasn't even noon when foilist13 was dangling from the treetops.

When they took the time to check their suspicions, they got to breathe a sigh of relief. Allthough foilist clearly was carrying a pitchfork, that was appearantly only for show. During a search of his house, a gun was found hidden under a loose floortile.

foilist13 has been lynched day 4. He is now dead. He was a Mafia Goon.

Having seen their first succes since the start of this ordeal, it was time for a small celebration. The party lasted till sunset, when everyone took to their homes and beds again.

Appearantly not, at least not that night. When they woke up the next morning, and gathered for another day of discussion, they were surprised to see that they were all there.

Do not discuss formatting of such conversations either.

The reason for this rule is to avoid players trying to get themselves confirmed based on things that should have no influence on the game. Yet that is exactly what Unsight was trying to do here.

When a modkill happens, the decission of whether day ends or not depends on the alignement of the modkilled player. Basically, modkills shouldn't be used to gain an advantage. To avoid players drawing a modkill "to gain an extra lynch", day will end if a pro-town player is modkilled. To avoid players drawing a modkill "to prevent discussion from happening", day continues if an anti-town player is modkilled.

The weather steadily worsened. The citizens put on their warmest clothing and gathered in the village square for another day of discussion. They ignored the pouring rain. They ignored the thunderstorm that got ever closer. They were standing in the middle of the village. What was the worst that could happen?

Quite a bit, as all of a sudden a bolt of lightning struck in their midst. Poor Unsight was incinerated on the spot. That's when the villagers ran. With the weather worsening, most took cover in their houses as soon as they could. A brave party of individuals visited Unsight's house first to do a quick check of his belongings, but couldn't find anything of interest. Following the example of the others, they went home too.

Allthough most citizens were hiding safely from the storm, some took the risk of venturing outside. Leafsnail, for example, had his religous duties to attend. Having complete faith that he had nothing to fear from such a storm, he bravely went outside.

His faith didn't protect him from the horrible attack that came that night, though. When the weather cleared next morning, and the citizens went outside again, they found him lying in the middle of the street, claw and bite marks all over him.

Leafsnail has been killed night 5. He is now dead. He was a pro-town monk.

Their numbers were dwindling, but that made discussion even fiercer. It didn't take long to get a mob formed to string Pomegranate up.

When her last breath left her body, something strange started to happen. Her nose became more elongated, her nails grew longer, developping into claws, and hair started to grow all over her body. She seemed to be some sort of monster. A werewolf, to be more exact.

Pomegranate has been lynched day 6. She is now dead. She was a werewolf.

After another afternoon of celebrations, it was time to go to bed again.

Day 6 has ended, it is now night. Night 6 will last at least till wednesday, 21st of july, 9.30 am GMT+1.

The next morning, only 10 citizens gathered for discussion. In merely six days and nights, the populations of the village was cut in half. This threat needed to be stopped soon, or there would be noone left.

One of the citizens found dead that morning was Super Smash Bros. Fan. He was killed by a single gunshot, and didn't leave any earthly possessions worth noting.

Only 10 citizens were participating in the discussion, but that didn't mean the discussion was calm. Still, accusations were slung in every direction, till the group got itself riled up enough to take action. Shortly afterwards, Tubby216 was dangling from the tree. It was getting pretty full up there.

A search of his house confirmed that he was hung with a reason. He, too, had hidden a gun.

With each scumbag being lynched, the confidence of the villagers rose. Their convictions became stronger, the decissions were made sooner. It was only a couple of hours after sunrise when Ythan was hanging from the treetops. Oh well, that left more time for partying when his gun was found.

In the past few days, confidence had risen. Scumbag after scumbag had been found and eliminated. This day, opinions were split. Richard or Lowell? Arguments were exchanged, debate ensued, and slowly the groups solidified. As the sun was setting, a group of four marched on Richard. Despite vehement protests from both Richard and Midnight's Sorrow, they grabbed some rope and strung him to the nearest tree.

The rope closed around his neck, and Richard's protests became weaker and weaker as his face grew ever more blue. That was the only change in his body though. Clearly he wasn't some kind of monster like Pomegranate had been.

With the sun setting, everyone made their way to Richard's house, were they split up to search for weapons. None were found, however. Sure, he possessed a pitchfork that could be used to stab someone, and a hammer which could be used to give someone a solid beating up, but nothing as dangerous as the guns the mafia members had possessed.

RichardGHP has been lynched day 9. He is now dead. He was a pro-town Vanilla Townie.

The sun had fully set before the search was completed. Some small clouds drifted across the sky, hiding stars from sight, then revealing them again. There weren't nearly enough clouds to completely obscure the full moon though.

Vezokpiraka was rummaging through the kitchen as he heard a rustling sound behind him. Shocked, he looked over his shoulder to see a figure standing there. A long, elongated snout, dark brown eyes, long brown hair everywhere, a set of ferocious claws and teeth to match. This was a werewolf at it's most dangerous.

Vezokpiraka brought up his rosary for protection, but it was ripped away in a single swipe. A second swipe wiped the square and compasses badge from his shoulder. Then the monster attacked.

vezokpiraka has been killed in endgame. He is now dead. He was a pro-town monk mason.

Midnight's Sorrow heard vezokpiraka's screams while he was looking through the garden. He headed over to help immediately. He never arrived, though. He never saw the grey figure that shot at him, swift as lightning, fierce as fire. With no way too defend himself, he soon was teared to shreds.

Midnight's Sorrow has been killed in endgame. He is now dead. He was a pro-town Vanilla Townie.

As the search went on unfruitful, Lowell started to get suspicions. As he investigated the attic, he was continually looking around suspiciously. From the attic window, he saw the end of Midnight's Sorrow. That was when he decided it was time to flee.

Silently, he sneaked down the stairs, holding his breath with every creaking step. If he just could make it outside without those monsters noticing him... Those monsters knew exactly where he was though. They waited for him at the bottom of the staircase, and left nothing but a mangled body.

Lowell has been killed in endgame. He is now dead. He was a pro-town Vanilla Townie.

Two wolves howling to a full moon. Were they howling in triumph, having finally rid the town from the human pests? Were they howling in anger, having lost a sister in the proces? This setup was intended as a larger version of Monks and Masons. The monks were distributed randomly among all vanilla townies and mafiosi, the masons were distributed randomly among all vanilla townies and werewolves. The other powerroles were intended to give scum some room to manouvre with fakeclaims. The setup had 24 players in order to allow the town two mislynches in the worst case scenario.

After the first two days, I was giving very little for the chances of the town. Most monks and masons outed, a roleblocker who was disbelieved because mafia missed their nightkill, a mafia member who was likely considered non-mafia because of a doc protect when a kill was missing... I'm surprised to see how far town came.

What worked in town's favour were the large amounts of missed nightchoices. Mafia missed 3 kills, Werewolves 1. With the excellent werewolves play, town still didn't stand much of a chance, though.

Vezokpiraka essentially becoming confirmed town day 1, but still living to endgame was interesting to see.

I'm not too happy with the flavourtext I wrote. Some pieces were ok, but most of it felt a bit bland. I'm also unsure if I handled the battle mage replacement correctly. I had been lenient towards him already, and didn't want to encourage active lurking, but still felt not too happy about replacing an essentially active player.

I would love to hear comments on the way I modded this game, and what could be improved.

There was no dead QuickTopic. I prefer if there is no talking about my games outside of the gamethread. If you don't talk about ongoing games, there is no chance of slipping up and talking about it to someone who isn't supposed to know.

There isn't much I can do about it until the crumbs are pointed out, but no. Mafia is IMO a game were information is vital. You constantly have to consider the advantages and disadvantages of sharing the information you have. Sharing the information without sharing it (by hiding it in your post some way) does not fit that picture.
