RULES


General Rules

A1) The mod's decisions are final.
A2) If you feel that I have made a mistake or otherwise have questions, you may send me a PM or post a bolded message in thread like this:

A4) You may not discuss other games still in progress in the game thread.
A5) If you are dead, you may not post in the game thread or communicate with living players about the game.
A6) You may not quote or pretend to quote private communications with the mod or other players. You may paraphrase, but you should check with me first if you are unsure if you are crossing the line.
A7) You may not post in invisible text, encrypted text, or any other form of communication that is intended to not be easily read by all players.
A8) You may not edit any posts.
A9) Please do not post in

A10) If you are modkilled, you lose the game, even if your faction eventually wins. I will decide whether or not modkills end the day.
A11) I reserve the right to add rules or make exceptions to any existing rules if I feel there is a situation that requires the mod to intervene.

Voting

B1) Votes must be bolded like this:

B3) A lynch will occur when one player has the majority of votes for the day.
B4) Once a player has the majority of votes needed for a lynch, the lynch is final and further votes and unvotes will not count.

B6) If a lynch is not reached by the time the deadline arrives, there will be no lynch.

Deadlines and Activity

C1) Each day phase will have a deadline of three weeks.
C2) Days will not officially end until the mod locks the thread, regardless of whether a player has accumulated enough votes for a lynch or the posted deadline has passed. Players may continue to post until then.
C3) Extensions will be granted if replacements need to be found close to the deadline.
C4) Players may request a deadline extension by popular vote. This will only be allowed once during the game and generally will be no more than a week. All other changes to the deadline will be decided by the mod and will be announced in thread.
C5) Night phases will last for roughly 72 hours, starting from the time the thread is locked and ending when the thread is unlocked and the start of a new day is announced. Night actions may be performed any time in between.
C6) If a night action is not submitted, no action will be taken.
C7) If a replacement is needed during a night phase, I will extend the deadline regardless of whether the player being replaced has a night action or not.
C8) I will try to prod players when they have not posted for 72 hours. Players may also request prods on other players. All prods will be announced in thread.
C9) If a player does not respond to a prod within 72 hours, or if they need to be prodded too often, they will be replaced. This will be up to the discretion of the mod.
C10) If you will be unable to post for over 72 hours, inform the mod through PM or in the game thread. All V/LA notifications will be made public by the mod unless the player has already done so.
C11) I will try to post vote counts at least once per page. Players may request a new vote count at any time.

Sportsmanship

D1) Remember, mafia is a team game. Always play to win.
D2) Do not invoke external non-mafia factors (i.e. threats, wagers, or demands not related to this game) in an attempt to influence the game.
D3) Avoid personal attacks on other players.
D4) Treat this game as a committment and try to stay active out of fairness to the other players.

Other Notes about this Setup

E1) All night actions will be resolved using Natural Action Resolution.
E2) If there is a conflict between the rules and what is written in a player's role PM, the role takes precedence.
E3) Players with multiple choices for night actions may only perform one action per night unless otherwise stated in the role PM. Factional kills are an exception to this rule.
E4) Non-investigative roles with an active ability will not be told if their action was successful or not. Investigative roles will be told something along the lines of "you were unable to determine..." if their action was unsuccessful.
E5) Protective abilities block all kill attempts (even stacked attempts) unless explicitly stated otherwise.

Instinctively you travel to a small Town and see Dracula’s keep Castlevania has once again returned. You were sure you had permanently sealed him in an eclipse. You gather yourself and head to face the horrors inside the dread keep. As you enter the courtyard you see a number of other warriors. Many wield a whip reminiscent of the lost Vampire Killer whip of the Belmont bloodline.

A final conflict waits in the halls of Castlevania.

11/12 players have confirmed, so I will start the day.

You each felt the call or had reason to come. So now all of you mill about in the courtyard of the keep know as Castlevania. There are twelve of you. Most are outfitted with traditional Vampire Hunter’s gear. Some bear spellbooks, swords, or other implements used to destroy Dracula and his minions.

There is a general unease felt. Why have so many come all at once? Why does the moon continue to shine with a deep crimson hue? Where are all the normal beasts that usually roam outside Castlevania? The answers to these questions may well mean the difference between triumph and destruction in the rooms and corridors you are about to invade.

Two Vampire Hunters grab the handles of Castlevania’s front doors and tug with all their might. The doors slowly creak as they open, the rusty hinges protesting with a grating of rusted metal against rusted metal. Darkness waits inside.

The twelve of you enter Castlevania to face whatever is within. But some of you are not who you appear to be.

After several hours spent wandering the halls of Castlevania the assembled group gathered in a large antechamber. Each had a similar story to tell. They had encountered minor menaces – bats, skeletons, and even the occasional mer-man. But no significant resistance had been met. Furthermore chambers that were familiar to some as lairs of Dracula’s stronger allies lay empty. Something unusual was going on.

UncertainKitten took charge as everyone milled about.

“It might be wise to discuss our histories with Dracula and his minions. Or not. What do you all think?”

A jumble of voices spoke. Some thought it was meaningless drivel to rehash the past. Others looked warily about, still unsure of what to make of the whole situation. In the end most spoke out against a historic recitation of their deeds.

“Good enough. I’ve gathered what I need from your reactions” UncertainKitten said.

“What do you mean ‘gathered what you need to know’?” asked zwetschenwasser. “I think you are an imposter anyway and know it is my destiny to destroy you.”

zwetschenwasser moved menacingly towards UncertainKitten. At that a number of others drew closer, trying to determine zwet’s intentions. At that he spoke again –

“Ok, I was lying. I don’t think UncertainKitten is an imposter. I was just testing you. Coach Travis’s reaction indicates he’s some sort of minion of Dracula!”

At this point the room descended into chaos. tanstalas began accusing everyone who looked the wrong way at him of being corrupt. Others took sides and began arguing with or against tanstalas for his paranoid views. At one point a side conversation began in which Katsuki began discussing strange wildlife he had encountered over the years.

After some time LynchMePls shouted “I’ve had enough of this stupidity!”

He grabbed a large cross from his belt. Picking out a target he threw it at MehPlusRawr. The cross spun through the air and slashed hard into MehPlusRawr’s chest.

MehPlusRawr crumpled to the ground, their pool of hearts depleted.

You arrive one by one in a grand hall. It appears that a massive battle has recently taken place here. Pieces of heavy armor lie strewn about. It appears someone has destroyed a large number of Axe Armors. Each of you looks uneasily about as this is far stronger resistance than you have previously met.

Each one of you looks ready to depart when someone notices a statue sitting off to the side of the hall in a dark nook. The statue is of a whip wielding warrior in a dramatic battle pose. The quality of the carving work is top-notch.

It is then that the horror of the situation sets in … it is not a statue at all. It’s UncertainKitten, as the attire matches what he was wearing when he arrived at the castle. A quick head-count confirms that UncertainKitten is indeed missing.

Soon enough everyone gathered again in a grand dining hall. There had been further minor skirmishes but nothing like the carnage everyone had witnessed earlier.

“Let’s take a break and gather our energy. Despite the fact that my keen eyes have discovered no signs of Dracula I know he is here” Coach Travis said as he bit into a piece of hard tack.

Some grumble as they eat their rations. However not everyone seems eager to be of a pleasant, social nature.

“I don’t think you are looking for Dracula” zwetschenwasser said. “In fact I think you are in league with him.”

Coach Travis scoffed at zwet’s statement. “I’m Simon Belmont and the most famous Vampire Hunter ever. It’s preposterous that I would be one of his minions.”

“LIAR!!!” zwetschenwasser shouted. “I saw your hatred for UncertainKitten. I know you had something to do with his death!!!!

With that outburst everyone jumped up and grabbed Coach Travis. He fought off them as best he could until McGriddle drew a dagger and threw it quickly at Coach Travis. The blade pierced Coach Travis’s chest and he dropped to the the ground as his last Heart faded away.

One by one you wander into Castlevania’s library. The few haunted Tomes and Poltergeists you encounter are no match for your combined martial prowess. Among the tables on the main floor you come across another statue. The stone figure bears the clothing, weaponry and features of Dekes.

As several of you grumble about yet another comrade lost to Dracula’s minions a quick head count reveals that someone else is missing. Where is jenniwren? One of you then spots her slight figure on the ground behind Dekes’ petrified form. She bears no marks that you can see. Her skin is clammy to the touch and her face is locked in an expression of pure terror.

After the loss of Dekes and jenniwren it doesn’t take long for the remaining members of the group to turn on zwetschenwasser.

Spyrex spoke up “First you claimed that UncertainKitten was evil and he ended up a rock. Then you claimed you had proof that Coach Travis was evil and he was a Belmont. I think it is clear which of us is working for Dracula.”

Spyrex advances on zwetschenwasser and is joined by tanstalas and LynchMePlease. zwetschenwasser doesn’t have much more to say than repeating over and over “I’m Jonathan Morris”. VasudeVa hefts an axe and tosses it directly at zwetschenwasser. The heavy blade catches zwet right in the chest and he crumbles to the floor.

Spyrex draws his sword when zwetschenwasser doesn’t appear as a monster and turns to face the others. As he does locks eyes with VasudeVa, whose appearance suddenly shimmers. Spyrex almost instantly petrifies, his expression locked in the realization that he was doomed.

tanstalas gasped shocked at VasudeVa’s sudden revelation as Medusa. She begins to summon her runic power but before she can act a huge sickle blade erupts from her chest. LynchMePlease smiles in a twisted fashion from behind her, holding Death’s favorite weapon.

McGriddle beings to back up shocked at the sudden carnage. He stops on when Katsuki impales his fangs into McGriddle, draining his life blood to feed his vampiric thirst.

You awoke from the darkness once again to find another 100 years had passed since your last defeat. You quickly summoned your strongest minions to you to begin planning for a way to insure the defeat of the dreaded Belmonts once and for all. Your High Priest Shaft uncovered a once in a millennia mystical convergance was soon to occur. It would allow you to draw every Belmont who has ever bedevilled you from all points in the past to Castlevania in the present. You and your allies would destroy the bloodline once and for all.

The night arrived and under the light of the full moon you, Death and Medusa watched as Shaft repeated the incantations over and over. As the mystical power coalesced around the Castle Death floated forward and impaled Shaft on his black scythe. Shaft’s death completed the ritual and the moon took on the hue of his spilling blood as the magical energy exploded into the Night, seeking those you wished to kill.

You and your minions are able to quickly dispose of three of the Belmonts and their allies before too many arrive en-mass. You use the last of ritual’s magical energies to take on the appareances of the dead heroes. You will hunt the remainder as trusted allies.

You awake from your slumber feeling the call. It pulls at your soul, making it almost painful to ignore. You instinctively know that your father has risen once again, despite your previous efforts to destroy him for all time. You gather your possessions and swiftly make your way under the cover of Night to Castlevania.

Something is different this time. The moon glows with an eerie red hue. You find little resistance as you approach the keep. Normally Dracula’s minions would seek to bar your way. As you enter the castle you find a gathering in the courtyard. Some you recognize from your previous efforts against your Father. Others you don’t know but clearly bear the signs of the Belmont line.

Something of grand scale is about to unfold in Castlevania.

- If a player investigates you in an attempt to determine your alignment, they will be told the opposite of the result they would have gotten on a normal town player. This is a passive ability.

The draw you feel is palpable. After your defeat of Dracula and his minions you returned to the life you lived before. For several years things proceeded as normal. Then the pull on your soul began. You know in your gut that Dracula lives again, but your mind refused to believe it as you buried his charred remains. When you saw the moon tainted red like blood you knew you could no longer deny the truth – Dracula has return.

You gathered your gear and made way to Castlevania. You noticed the signs of others making similar trips as you journeyed through the forests. Your keen eyes picked up the signs of other warriors heading to the keep. When you arrived at the courtyard you found many other warriors there. Many bear a striking resemblance to you and your father. Most carry what appears to be a whip similar to the Vampire Killer whip you yourself wield.

Dark events are about to unfold in Castlevania.

The red tinge of the moon fills you with dread. Something deep inside you stirs with a knowledge that Dracula has risen again. You gathered your gear and made the journey to the keep Castlevania. Your vast experience in dealing with Dracula and his minions grants you a sixth sense as to their tactics. You will protect any innocent you come across during the battles in the castle with this knowledge, even if your physical skills have somewhat deteriorated. When you arrive at Castlevania’s courtyard you are surprised to see other warriors have gathered there.

When you learned of the departure of your childhood friend Jonathan after the moon turned red you knew trouble had returned. His destiny as a Vampire Hunter made it clear you that Dracula had somehow returned.

You gathered your spellbook and quickly travelled to where Jonathan had said that Castlevania once stood. Despite your great magical powers the journey worries you. You’ve always had a strong warrior to protect you from the dangerous minions of the vampires. As you enter the keep courtyard you are surprised to see a gathering of people preparing to enter. Many have the look of Vampire Hunters. Perhaps you will be safe enough for your magical skills to be of use against the evil within.

Abilities:
Hide
- You may tell me the name of a player you wish to hide behind at night. If you target a town-aligned player, any kill attempts that target you that night will fail. However, if the player you target is killed that night, you will die as well. If you target a player who is not aligned with the town, you will die.

You win when all threats to the town have been eliminated and at least one town player is alive.

There is a great disturbance in the magical plane. Someone has worked a spell of unimaginable power. The moon turning crimson confirms the information your mystical senses relay to you.

You gather your mystic glyphs and quickly follow the trail left behind by the magical disturbance. You are prepared to unleash whatever magical powers that your glyphs absorb during your conflict. The trial leads to Castlevania … the dread keep of Dracula. As you glide into the courtyard you see an array of Vampire Hunters and others gathered there. Strange, you thought the Belmont line that spawned them was lost.

Something magical and terrifying is about to occur in Castlevania.


Abilities:
Absorb Glyph (Absorb)
- If you are targeted by any actions during a night phase, you will learn those abilities and be able to use them one time each during a subsequent night phase. You may not use the same action more than once during the game.

You win when all threats to the town have been eliminated and at least one town player is alive.

You feel a strong pull … an almost magical urge pressing against you. You’ve felt nothing like this since you defeated the Vampire Walter Bernhard. The call is too strong to ignore. You take up the blessed whip that your lover Sara Trantoul sacrificed herself to create and travel to a nearby Town. There on a high bluff, framed by a blood-red moon, sits a daunting keep. You make your way there and enter the castle courtyard to see a number of warriors waiting gathering there. Many wield whips similar to your own.

Danger awaits you in your first trip into Castlevania.

One night, while sitting watching the stars you witness something of unearthly origin occur – the moon itself turns red right before your eyes. Quickly talking with your mentor Morris you come to a frightening conclusion. He believes that Dracula has returned. You gather you Hunter’s Whip and head to the site of your last conflict. As you crest a hill you see the suspicions were true as Castlevania sets high upon a craggy bluff. You enter the keep grounds to find a group of other warriors preparing for battle. Many carry whips not unlike your own.

I'll let the mafia decide whether they want to post their QT or not.

tans, if you were targeted for the mafia kill, you would not have learned it no matter what since it was a factional ability. However, if you were targeted by the vig, you could have learned it if you survived the kill by getting protection (you would have learned the protection ability as well).

I'll have more thoughts tomorrow. I will say that I thought the setup was mostly balanced, maybe slightly tilted toward scum, although that ended up not mattering (scum actually could have won more quickly if they had not blocked SpyreX N2). The bottom line is that it's just not possible to balance the possibility of a VT fakeclaiming a guilty result on town in a game this size.

My thoughts on the game:

As Magna pointed out, one of the things we tried to do in creating the setup was to punish certain assumptions made by both the town and scum. Including a miller certainly got discussion started among the scum team about a cop. A bodyguard was used instead of a doc mainly for balance purposes. The scum had a jailkeeper instead of a roleblocker to make them think there was a vig (and there actually was), and because town might be more likely to believe a jailkeeper claim than a roleblocker claim. The role absorber was an interesting role that unfortunately didn't get utilized in this game. I was thinking that by softclaiming, tans might have gotten the scum to jailkeep or role investigate him, and he would have learned those abilities, but he was forced to claim his full role early, which prevented that.

The scum team played well, and were able to keep everyone fooled until the very end. I don't think LMP was a serious suspect at any point (this is becoming a trend in my games), and Katsuki and VV were able to paint various town players as scummy without drawing a huge amount of suspicion themselves. They always seemed to be in that "might be the last scum, but I'm not quite sure" zone for most people.

While I won't take a hard-line stance against having zwet in my future games, I think the cop gambit was ill-advised at best. zwet essentially took the game into his own hands and risked an almost certain loss on the bet of catching one scum. Even if he had been right about Coach Travis, that just evens the odds at best. Also, if there had been a real cop in the game, zwet could have easily outed them.

As to whether I would consider this game a success, I think I'm undecided because I don't think we really got the opportunity to see how things would have played out under normal circumstances. I was pretty happy with the overall activity level, and D1 was interesting to follow at least. I'm glad that the players seem to think it was a fun setup, so I guess in that respect, it was a successful game.
