Good Ol' Fashion Crypto

Post Post #0 (isolation #0) » Thu Feb 17, 2011 3:20 pm

Post by theplague42 »

Hey everyone, theplague42 and Packbat at it again. This time, it's a classical cryptography thread. Hopefully it's pretty self-explanatory after you read the rules. Whosever cipher is posted first will be the first one we try to solve. It'd be nice if the plaintext was a famous poem, quote, etc. so that everyone would know what's up.

Rules:

1. Ciphers should be able to be encoded and decoded by hand. We may start a list later on acceptable types.
2. One-step ciphers only, please. If you think you have a really good two- or multi-step one, PM me or Packbat (or both) for special permission.
3. In the case of substitution ciphers, you can leave spaces or remove them if you want. If you want to include spaces, punctuation is optional. In the case of transposition ciphers, transpose letters only and break the ciphertext into blocks of five, as is standard.
4. Include a description of difficulty. Easy, medium, or hard. Generally depends on length and source of ciphertext, key length, etc. Later on, we may post more specific guidelines for difficulty levels.
5. Group discussion is allowed on medium and hard ciphers. Easy ciphers should be able to be solved by one person in a fairly short amount of time.
6. If your cipher cannot be cracked, you can start posting clues or hints. This can be the source of ciphertext (eg. "it's the beginning to a poem"), type of cipher, etc. Clues should get more detailed as time goes on.
7. Whoever posts the correct key and plaintext first is the winner. They can either post their own cipher or leave it open to anyone who wants to.
8. English-only plaintexts, please.
9. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me or Packbat, preferably both.

Link to a set of twelve courses about classical cryptography. They're pretty lengthy, but just skimming them is still worthwhile. The "General Nature of the English Language" section is immensely helpful.

Also, if you know of any good sources for learning about classical cryptography, post them!

Are you using a program for this? If so, which one?

Frequency analysis is interesting.

He said it was easy/medium, so Vigenere is a definitely possibility. Period-finding time. It's awfully short though, so frequency analysis will be interesting while trying to find the key.

Repetition First Letter Interval Factors
IZG 20, 65 45 3,3,5
MNI 51, 136 85 5,17

Possible period-length of 5? The only common factor between the two.

are
doing cryptograms. That is what the thread is for.
That's because it's rare to find someone who can cryptanalyze a transposition cipher :)

Alright very nice, more activity. Sadly, I've been rather
lazy
absent-minded regarding this thread. I'll try to do more this month.

@Packbat
I think I'm going to change around the OP and rules some. Some of the multiple-step rules are pretty much useless. I'll just change it to one-step only.

When Caldwell complains to O'Neill about Earth new ship being called ''Enterprise'' and the crew calling him Picard.

'Okay so here's my idea' O'Neill began, leaning in so nobody but Teal'c could overhear. 'You start wearing an expensive, but unconvincing toupee, make out with resident alien babe Anise and then they'll start calling you Kirk instead' he advised in as serious a tone as he could muster.

Ok so I see a lot of repeated letters.
xrmzwzgrgs
with the z_z and the g_g, plus
phthlll and xwwwfyxmww
with triple letters. There are lots of doubles, so I won't bother to post them all. These just jumped out at me.
