Newbie 1079: Feed the Lynch Mob (Game Over)

It was difficult to converse over the thundering roar of the waterfall. As the stream cascaded down the hill and into the river below, the three of them shouted at each other until they were all hoarse. The words were as good as underwater; none of them had heard anything. Even if they had, the words themselves were empty. None of the three spoke what was truly on their minds. After all, they were mafia scum, masters of manipulation and deception. Their loyalties to each other were not enough to break well-ingrained habits.

Up above them, past the rocky cliff, church bells marked the dawn. Distant crowing accompanied the rhythmic clangs of the death knells of the night. Already, there were townspeople milling about, getting ready for the morning. It was the perfect picture of an idyllic rural town, one that had always relied on itself for its daily sustenance. The notion that the mafia occupied this peaceful place was an odd one, yet nobody had ever bothered to question it. It was simply an accepted fact.

The sun rose on yet another day. Everyone would rise, and then they would do what they needed to do to survive. They would pay no heed to the dead man in the crevice behind the waterfall, shot to death because he wouldn't agree to a hostile takeover of the town. They would avoid gazing at the two figures walking back toward the town square, each holding a smoking gun.

Instead, a mob would silently form...

General

3. Unless otherwise specified in your role PM or by me, you may not communicate outside of this thread while the game is running. If someone contacts you outside of the game, please let me know immediately!
   
4. Do not quote any private communication to which you have access. This includes game-related PMs and QuickTopics. Paraphrasing is okay.
5. If it is not visible to the naked eye, do not post it. This includes, but is not limited to: invisible text, tiny text, encrypted text, and text hidden within tags. Spoiler text, however, is allowed, as long as it is used within reason. For cases of breadcrumbing where you aren't sure, please PM me beforehand.
6. If you have the ability to edit your posts, don't use it in my game.
7. Regular

Activity

1. You should aim for at least one post per 48 hours to keep the game moving.
2. Prods will be issued to players if they have not posted within a 72-hour period. I will also prod on request as long as at least 48 hours have passed since the player's last post.
3. A player who has been prodded has 48 hours to respond to the prod. If I do not receive a response, I will seek a replacement. If the player responds and is still interested in playing, and I have not yet found a replacement, the player may continue to play.
4. Players who have been prodded 3 times are subject to replacement without further notice. Player-requested prods do not count toward this total.
5. If you anticipate being away for at least 48 hours, please PM me or post a V/LA notice in the thread with the expected date of your return.

Day

1. Days have a fixed duration of 3 weeks. Deadline extensions will be granted only in extreme circumstances.
2. Lynches occur through simple majority (50% of living players + 1, rounded down). If no majority is reached at deadline or there is a majority of votes for No Lynch, the day will end without a lynch.
3. Votes must be on a separate line, flushed left, and bolded (e.g.,
   Vote: Equinox
   ). The same applies to vote revocations (e.g.,
   Unvote
   ). Unvotes are preferred but not necessary when switching votes (e.g.,
   Unvote, Vote: Equinox
   ). Use of the vote tags (e.g., VOTE: Equinox) is optional.
4. Once majority is reached, no further votes or unvotes will count.
5. All players, including the lynched player, are allowed to discuss in twilight phase until I post the death scene.
6. Dead players may make one "Bah!" post that contains no game-related content.

Night

1. Nights will last 72 hours.
2. If I do not receive your action by deadline, your action is forfeited. You may submit ahead of time; you can also make as many changes as necessary, and at deadline I will take the last action you submitted.
3. For
   all
   replacements that take place during this phase, I will extend deadline by 24 hours.

Moderator Actions

1. Flavor is for entertainment purposes only and has no significance in the game.
2. Vote counts will be posted once per page or once per 24 hours, depending on activity level.

The day seemed to drag on forever as the nine of them argued in the middle of the town square. By this time, a large crowd had gathered around, curious about the proceedings. In a way, they acted as guards to prevent the nine from leaving without any results to show for the job pushed upon them. As the sun began to set and the crickets began to chirp, everyone there began to lose interest. Fingers that once thrashed about fell to their owners' sides, listless. Voices that were once high and angry tapered off into an uncomfortable silence.

But who could blame them? These were their long-time neighbors, their beloved friends, who had known and supported each other for years. The mere thought that two of them were traitors inflicted emotional pain upon them all. However, deep down, they knew what they had to do. They needed to protect future generations of this town; the mafia needed to be eradicated.

It was dark when a noose was finally fashioned and tied from the giant oak tree in the center of the square. This old tree, planted when the town was first founded innumerable years ago, had seen everything in this town's history; now, it would participate. Choosing who would swing from the rope was harder, but the decision was made anyway. Five people agreed that Sn1pe29 was guilty. Five people grabbed him and strung him up.

Nothing happened. They expected Sn1pe29 to yell or scream or maybe even pull out his gun, but he didn't do anything. One person from the lynching mob stepped tentatively toward Sn1pe29, and, when nothing further happened, searched Sn1pe29's clothes. Something clattered to the ground, and the crowd gasped. With great trepidation, they all moved closer to see that it was...

...a pocketwatch. On the backside, the words "Most Upstanding Citizen of the Year" were engraved.

It took a while before }|{opa remembered what he intended to do at the town square. There were a few hours left before daybreak, but }|{opa felt impatient and wanted to investigate something that had been bothering him. He walked by the oak tree where the mob had lynched Sn1pe29. The place had been swept clean. The noose, however, remained, and }|{opa felt shivers run down his spine just looking at it; the events of that afternoon still haunted him.

He made his way behind the tree, and he knelt down to grab a small shovel that was kept at the base of the trunk. }|{opa glanced around quickly to make sure nobody was around, and he began to dig. Some moments later, the shovel hit something hard, and }|{opa dug around a bit to free the object. Out came a small locked box. He took out the key from one of his pockets and opened the box eagerly.

}|{opa did not find anything inside. More accurately put, he couldn't, for as soon as he had stuck the key into the lock, a bullet was lodged in the back of his neck. He hadn't even heard the footsteps of his killer or the small pop of a silenced gun. A gloved hand held }|{opa's head while the other grabbed the box from }|{opa's hands. Satisfied with the box's contents, the hands closed the box, and }|{opa slumped to the ground.

That morning, the crowd gathered at the cliff, having decided that it would be better to not disturb the crime scene at the town square. The waterfall made it difficult to hear anything being said, but it didn't stop anyone from trying. For hours, they argued over who would kill }|{opa, who was asleep and who was awake at night, who was seeing whom... It went on and on. Though they were there to root out the mafia, they spent a lot of time bickering about their personal lives. Fortunately for everyone involved, their secrets were drowned out in the background roar.

Sometime during the afternoon, the mob suddenly went quiet. It was then that they realized one person among them had barely spoken at all, and he was rather occupied with a box he was holding in his hands. When he was asked to reveal the contents of the box, Nachomamma8 refused. The wild look he had in his eyes told the mob all they needed to know. They were ready to grab him when Nachomamma8 spoke up:

"I'm the cop!"

Nachomamma8 then presented his badge and an investigative report. Everyone paused for a moment, pondering the claim... and then they moved toward him again. Realizing that there was no convincing them now, Nachomamma8 turned tail and ran. One of the people chasing threw a rock at Nachomamma8's head, and it struck. The shock of getting hit caused him to lose his balance, and he fell off the cliff.

When they looked down, they could see Nachomamma8 at the bottom, no longer moving. Beside him was the box he was holding and a gun.

Herodotus's hands shook as he held his cell phone to take a picture of the scene. The crevice in which he crouched was cold from the water and the evening chill, and the fear only made it worse. He knew there wasn't much time to investigate. Soon, Nachomamma8's partner would arrive to clean up the evidence, and Herodotus wanted to at least get a few hints as to who that buddy was before retiring for the night.

Not that there was much to find; Nachomamma8 had been careful about what he carried with him. The only things Herodotus found in the mafioso's pockets were an empty wallet with no identification, a couple of tissues, and a small metal key. Beside the body was the box and gun he'd seen earlier that afternoon. Herodotus took Nachomamma8's key and stuck it into the lock on the box. With a quiet click, the box was unlocked, and Herodotus opened it to look inside.

One single gold bar. It was probably a kilogram. It wasn't surprising that Nachomamma8 had this in his possession, but Herodotus still wondered. Also inside the box was a folded piece of paper. Spotting this, Herodotus grabbed it and opened it. As he read it, he thought he felt his heart skip a beat. This was a note addressed to the two mafia goons in their town. Herodotus had found what he was looking for! At last, they would be free of the scourge of the mafia...

"I'll be taking that from you now," came a voice from behind him.

With a loud bang and an accompanying splash, the mafia's secret was kept.

Every morning at the crack of dawn, tarsonisocelot made her jog along the stream. She believed in an active, healthy lifestyle, and nothing could keep her away from her daily exercise. One could go so far as to say that not even a murder could stop her, but there was no way of knowing... was there? At any rate, tarsonisocelot began this day like any other. When she stepped out of her house, she felt nothing strange. There was none of the dread she'd felt yesterday, moments before they'd found the first victim. Perhaps there would be no deaths this time, not after the town had killed one of the threats that had kept them living in fear for so long.

Feeling good, tarsonisocelot started to run. Earbuds in her ears, she scarcely heard the barking of the dogs or the shouting of her neighbors. She didn't notice that something was wrong until she reached the waterfall toward the end of her jogging course. There, she found a small group of her neighbors, all of whom stood around what appeared to be a pale and bloody Herodotus. tarsonisocelot's arrival interrupted their silent vigil. They glanced up and, together, had a good look at him.

Their movements were strangely synchronized. All it had taken was one sentence:

"It was her!"

They were known as the lynch mob, yet it seemed that they did more vanilla killing than lynching. This was particularly true today, when they decided to throw tarsonisocelot into the river to die just as Herodotus had, except tarsonisocelot did not have the swift mercy of a bullet. Eventually, the splashing in the water stopped... and then nothing.

"If tarsonisocelot is not the one, then I have a good idea of who it might be."

The words haunted Traveller's dreams.

He had spoken them with such confidence that morning, yet he was at a loss for words when they fished tarsonisocelot from the water. It was easy to claim to know who was the scumbag among them, but it was much harder when faced with the consequences of being wrong. After realizing that tarsonisocelot was innocent, none of the townspeople there wanted to continue accusing; instead, they ended the day early and retired to their respective homes to reflect upon what they had done. Traveller had spent his afternoon deep in thought, and he went to bed when he felt he couldn't think anymore.

His conscience would not leave him alone. Sn1pe29 and tarsonisocelot went in and out of his dreams as they wished, as did Traveller himself, repeating those same cursed words. The faces of GreyICE, pandabear, and Voidedmafia also came unbidden, each appealing to him to make the right decision, yet not even in his dreams did Traveller know if he was certain enough to make that call...

Fortunately, Traveller's troubles were interrupted by a noise. He jolted awake. Despite feeling more relief than shock, Traveller couldn't help but feel that there was something wrong. He grabbed a flashlight and stepped out of his bedroom to investigate. As he made his way through the hallway, the noises continued; he determined that they were coming from the kitchen. Traveller stopped when he reached the door to his living room. There was no telling who was breaking into his house at this dead hour.

Indeed, there would be no telling. The door opened, and before Traveller was a very familiar face that was now twisted in a cruel smirk. In this person's hand was a gun aimed at Traveller's face.

...and then there were three.

They stood in Traveller's backyard, unsure of how to proceed. To the two townies remaining, it was unfathomable that one of them was part of the mafia. They'd known each other for so long, after all. Still, the fact that they had not found any incriminating evidence in Traveller's house meant that it was down to the three of them, and they had to decide carefully. The worst part of it all was that this day was the last; the wrong move meant the end of their town as they knew it. Four days was all the time they were allowed, yet it felt like an eternity had passed.

Though no one wanted to do it, the day's business had to be carried out. Someone had to die today for the previous night's murder. As the day wore on, the three of them looked at each other suspiciously. The situation wasn't right; that much, they knew. GreyICE had managed to survive the last three nights untouched, and Voidedmafia had that nervous aura about him that caused the other two to wonder. pandabear felt like he was trapped in a terrible dilemma.

By the time there was agreement among the trio, the sky was painted in the lush, warm colors of sunset. Two sets of eyes bore themselves into Voidedmafia. He recognized the looks in their eyes, and he didn't like it. He tried to back away into Traveller's house, but it was no use. He didn't even know who of the two of them was the guilty one. For each step he took back, the other two moved forward; it was a cat-and-mouse game they played on the way to the door. Eventually, the mouse pounced.

pandabear produced a knife from an inner pocket, and he threw it straight at Voidedmafia's chest. His aim was true, and Voidedmafia died instantly.

A sense of accomplishment washed over him as he watched Voidedmafia's body slump to the ground. It was over. If he was right, he had just eradicated the mafia from the town. At last they would remember what the word "safety" meant! Excited, he ran over to Voidedmafia to check the body for signs of his membership in the mafia. Among Voidedmafia's effects were his wallet, a few credit cards, and a ticket stub to an

Ace Attorney

event being held in the city. There was nothing else of interest. How strange...

That was when he heard GreyICE sneer, "Looking for this?"

Behind him, GreyICE was holding up Nachomamma8's note, the one with both of their names inscribed upon it. In his other hand, he held a gun pointed at pandabear. It was then that pandabear realized that he had chosen incorrectly. It was too late to regret now. The only things left for pandabear to think about was how GreyICE had managed to survive for so long and what he would be doing to the rest of the town when he took care of pandabear. He thought it a little odd that he didn't feel worse about this defeat.

GreyICE did not bother with a silencer. The loud bang made no echo, but he knew the entire neighborhood had heard it.

The bells tolled as the funeral procession made its way out of the chapel. There was no one in the pews to pray for the dead; so few people remained in the town that they had all been enlisted as pallbearers to carry the eight coffins containing the victims of this deadly game. It was a silent affair. Not that there was nothing to be said; each of the townspeople had plenty on their minds about which they worried, but none of those worries were worth voicing. They were not at liberty to speak of the injustice that had led to these deaths over the past four days.

GreyICE led the way to the cemetery. There, eight plots were ready to receive the dead. He watched as they lowered the caskets into the ground and thought about what he'd done over the past week. He didn't know whether to feel pride or shame over it all. He glanced over at Nachomamma8's spot in the ground, half-hoping he'd get an answer from the man who had, together with him, planned this violent coup. Nachomamma8 had not said very much, but GreyICE had figured him for the strong, silent type of mafia capable of manipulating towns into following his will. Instead, that silence had killed him. What would Nachomamma8 have said in victory?

The soft sounds of the crank gave GreyICE no comfort.

Everyone should use this time to discuss the game and give and receive feedback for game play. Ask questions and see what you did well and what needs improving, and apply them to future games.

I'd also like to ask feedback from you, the players, about how I handled this game. Do you have any suggestions as to how I can improve? Feel free to PM me if you have a concern you don't wish to bring up in the thread.

In particular, I'd like feedback on my activity policy. For the past three games, I've prodded at the 72-hour mark, or as close to it as possible, and announced the prods as I made them. That resulted in a lot of spam in this game. Would it be better if I made fewer activity checks (i.e., once every 24 hours), or would you rather I stick to this policy? Any changes to it I should make?
