iPod Mafia

The lawn-mower was fully gassed up. He had cleared out all the kids toys and dog balls from the yard, and the sun was shining. He couldn’t put off the wonderful yard work that lay ahead of him any longer. Only one last thing to do before he fired up the mower – get his music going.

His iPod was the only thing that made the tedious hour plus long process of mowing tolerable. MagnaofIllusion put in his ear-buds and attached his iPod to his sleeve. Properly situated he pressed the Play button. Unfortunately the sound that immediately greeted him was static.

“What the hell?” he thought as he pressed the Advance button to actually hear some music. Little did he know what was happening inside the iPod or the other missing songs that would soon greet him.

General Rules

A1) The mod's decisions are final.
A2) If you feel that I have made a mistake or otherwise have questions, you may send me a PM or post a bolded message in thread like this: Mod: (message).
A3) You may not discuss this game outside of the game thread unless your role allows you to.
A4) You may not discuss other games still in progress in the game thread.
A5) If you are dead, you may not post in the game thread or communicate with living players about the game.
A6) You may not quote or pretend to quote private communications with the mod or other players. You may paraphrase but if in my judgement it is too close to a quote you may be subject to punishment. You may not make reference to timing of any communication provided by the Mod to you in thread or any other means of communication.
A7) You may not post in invisible, small, or encrypted text. A good rule of thumb on stenography – if the average person could not see the intended message when told how it was created or if the stenography requires outside of thread resources (language translation, etc) it isn’t acceptable.

B3) A lynch will occur when one player has the majority of votes for the day. A majority is defined as half the total living players in the game, rounded down, plus 1 additional vote.
B4) If at deadline no player has achieved a majority of votes a No lynch will occur.
B5) Once a player has the majority of votes needed for a lynch, the lynch is final and further votes and unvotes will not count
B6) You may

Deadlines and Activity

C1) The first Day will have an initial deadline of 2 weeks (14 days). All successive Days will last 1.5 weeks. (11 days).
C2) This game will operate under a

Bankable Days system

. At the point a lynch or No lynch is hammered any days between that point and the deadline will be added to the deadline. Example – Day One lasts 10 days. The 4 excess days are added to the Day Two deadline giving Day Two a total of 15 days until deadline. Extensions to the deadline will NOT be granted except as deemed necessary by the Mod.
C3) Days will not officially end until the mod locks the thread, regardless of whether a player has accumulated enough votes to be lynched or the deadline has passed. Players may continue to post until then.
C4) Night phases will last for

72 hours

from the time the thread is locked at the end of Day. Night actions must be submitted within

48 hours

to be guaranteed to be accepted. Delay in starting the next Day due to extenuating circumstances will only extend these deadlines if specifically stated by the Mod.
C5) If a night action is not submitted, no action will be taken.
C6) If a replacement is needed during a night phase, I will extend the deadline regardless of whether the player being replaced has a night action or not. This may be waived if the replacement feels that they have sufficent time to do a full-catchup and take any necessary Night actions.
C7) I will try to prod players when they have not posted for

72 hours

. Players may also request prods on other players that may be granted if the Mod feels they are reasonable. All prods will be announced in thread.
C8) If a player does not respond to a prod within

48 hours

, or if they need to be prodded too often, they will be replaced. This will be up to the discretion of the mod. Player requested prods will not count towards this rule.
C9) If you will be unable to post for over

72 hours

, inform the mod through PM or in the game thread. All V/LA notifications will be made public by the mod unless the player has already done so.
C10) I will try to post vote counts at least once every 24 to 48 hours. Players may request a new vote count at any time.

Sportsmanship

D1) Remember, mafia is a team game. Always play to win.
D2) Don’t be a jerk. This includes spamming the thread unnecessarily and attacking other players personally. Behavior that personally offends my sensibilities will result in warnings or punishment that does not benefit your affiliation’s interest based on the severity of the transgression. Consider this your fair warning.

D3) Treat this game as a commitment and try to stay active out of fairness to the other players.

Other Notes about this Setup

E1) All Night actions will be resolved using Natural Action Resolution. Remember the golden rule involving NAR … the timing list only comes into play when a direct conflict occurs. In the eventuality that a conflict arises that Natural Action Resolution cannot resolve the Mod reserves the right to make a decision based on his personal goals that went into the game design.
E2) If there is a conflict between the rules and what is written in a player's role PM, the role takes precedence.
E3) Players with multiple choices for night actions may only perform one action per night unless otherwise stated in the role PM. Factional abilities do not count towards this limit.
E4) Non-investigative type roles with an Active ability will not be told if their action was successful or not. Investigative roles will be told something along the lines of

"No Result"

if their action was unsuccessful.
E5) Protective abilities block all normal kill attempts (even stacked attempts) unless explicitly stated otherwise.
E6)

Expect the unexpected. Do not assume that standard expectations are applicable to the game.

E7) All QTs will be made public at game’s completion. Don’t say anything in there that you would not want being aired in public.

The threat of disharmony in MagnaofIllusion’s iPod was strong enough that the songs themselves took matters into their own hands. Lyrics were shouted back and forth, seeking those who sought to destabilize their home. Solos were used as weapons, seeking to find any discordance.

As all this digital mayhem swirled on the iPod soon Katsuki came under scruntiy. It was quickly determined she didn’t seem to be in synch with the rest of you. At first she was coy and tried to beckon to some of the male driven songs in a way that hinted that they would ‘benefit’ from her company. When this didn’t work she began throwing a diva style tantrum about how her needs were more important than anyone else’s.

In the end enough agreed that she was a source of disharmony that she was exiled from the iPod playlist. Fortunately for you that was a good decision.

Magnaofillusion was just finishing his side yard when he had to stop the mower to move some dog toys that were lying in his way. As he did so his iPod finished the current song. What greeted his ears was a large amount of static. “What the hell?” he thought as he quickly hit the skip button.

Magnaofillusion hated mowing around the swing-set. The quarters were cramped, the swing and rings caught the handle of his mower. Most annoyingly he had to avoid running over the wood-block base or risk damaging the mower blade. Just when he thought things couldn’t be any more frustrating in his ears he heard the sound of static in his ear-buds.

He stopped the mower cursing and fumbled for the advance button.

The wheels of justice move quickly on the digital highways of the iPod. Already a great amount of disharmony had eliminated from the musical array due to quick and decisive decisions. Thus emboldened the songs decided to once again move with rapid pace. Even the song chosen for exile himself quickly acted to support its own removal.

Magnaofillusion pull started the weed-whacker and began to trim around all the decorative landscaping and kid’s equipment that littered his yard. For a second the load roar of the 2 cycle gas engine distracted him from the fact he wasn’t hearing any music. He jabbed the volume control to raise the sound-level. When it maxed out he suddenly realized that it wasn’t music being drowned out but there was no music playing at all.

Mod Thoughts

I specifically said that the game was swingy in advertisements and I stand by that. All factions had significant Power but were vulernerable in multiple ways.

That the game went to LYLO I think overall shows that it was balanced.

Fate played a pretty effective game overall. He worked hard (or at least this was my impression) to make sure the Days were short which stymied discussion about the Serial Killer role and allowed him to attack Riceballtail Day 5 on inactivity. Anyone thinking critically about that attack (taking the time to do so) would be easily able to see that the string of 48hour or less days artifically limited the posting some players could make. Fate's biggest mistake was not timely submitting his N3 kill - had he actually sent in the kill on Surye Day 4 would have been a possible Kingmaker Scenario for Town.

The Mafia overall played pretty poorly. Losing Kats Day 1 was very painful and Glass's strong defense of Kats / Chainsaw on several people was obv. NoPoint's 'gambit' Day 4 was horrible exectured since he had access to a Tracker claim and forgot that AGar had claimed the N1 invention. Furthermore he could have killed Fate had he not waited for the deciding hammer from ThAd with the daykill. Being greedy (wanting to save the Daykill for Day 5) cost the Mafia.

Town play was so so. Overall Night actions were used pretty effectively, IMO. LLD's missing the deadline N1 changed the face of the game as AGar would have seen her visit Fate and likely been able to further confirm he was Not Town. RBT and ThAd's play Day 5 was very disappointing. ThAd in particular not bothering to assess anything other than that Fate 'deserved' to win if he was SK bordered on Not Playing to Win in my mind.

I think in the end the faction that played the best (Serial Killer) won, which in general is a pretty good guidline for a fairly well balanced game.

I disagree with those who stated that NoPoint's outing of Fate was poor sportsmanship. He had information that he could use in a quasi-Kingmaker situation and was NOT prevented by the rules as established from using it. In the end it was not any real issue as ThAd didn't bother to pay attention to it anyway.

I'll be happy to discuss any issues the players had with the game.

You should have seen the Reviewer comments on how unbalancing a Mafia Daykill would be. AGM was absolutely right that scum could cruise to endgame as confirmed Town using one. But that fear pretty much melted away once Storm of Swords ended.

The game could only win under the following circumstances.

1. Town kills all the scum. Can’t happen. Town can only achieve 2 kills by Night 1 (via Lynch and Motivated Gun). No possible way all 4 scum (SK and 3 Mafia can) can die before Day 2. If they lynch the Serial Killer on 1 scum can be killed an Night. If they lynch a Mafia the Serial Killer can’t die at Night. If the Mafia Daykills the Serial Killer and Town lynches Scum the can’t kill both remaining scumm at Night.
2. Serial Killer kills everyone else. Obv can’t happen.
3. Mafia wins in a 3-3 or 3-2-1 endgame. Scum needs 7 dead bodies to achieve either one of these.

3-3 – This means the Serial Killer was either lynched or Daykilled Day 1. If lynched there are only 3 other kills that can happen – Mafia Kill, Motivated Inventor giving a Gun, and Weak Doc death. So we have a total of 4 dead bodies.

If Daykilled and assuming a Town lynch there are only 2 other kills that can happen – Motivated Inventor giving a Gun and Weak Doc death. Same case …only 4 dead bodies.

Worst case under this scenario we have a 3-6 set-up after Night 2.

If the Serial Killer is not Daykilled or Lynched there are the following possible deaths.

Lynch – SK Kill on Town – Mafia Kill on Town / Daykill on Town – Motivated Gun kill on Town – Weak Doc death.

That’s 5 kills. Worst case scenario we have 3-1-4.

In any case the scum can’t achieve their win-con BEFORE Night 2.

Changes game ends before Day 2 – 0%

Chances Brotherhood Mafia ends BEFORE Day 2
