Hi, y’all, I’m really sorry that your original mod went AWOL. I’m your new substitute mod, so no throwing spitballs or changing the assigned seating chart on me. Moral of the story—get a backup mod for the games you run, otherwise you get stuck with me.

The ruleset from the OP remains intact, with the following changes:

-Votes must be in either bold or vote-tags to be counted. Full player names are not required. Unvoting is not required. However, if I ask you to clarify a vote, it will not be added to the official votecount until it is clarified to my satisfaction.

-If you are prodded, you have 48 hours to respond before I begin searching for a replacement (I didn't see a deadline for prod responses in the OP, but if I missed it, let me know).

-There will be no minimum length of twilight.

-All deadlines will be based on Pacific Daylight Time (GMT-8 +1)

-Flavor is flavor. It is there to entertain me and hopefully you (but mostly me). Do us all a favor and don’t read anything into it.

-Nights are currently set at 72 hours per the OP, but if the game unanimously requests it, I am happy to shorten Nights to 48 hours. PM me your preference.

I otherwise plan on continuing the rest of AD’s rules, including using blue as my color.

Finally, nameloc1986 has requested replacement. Night One will not end until one is found.

I have no idea what just happened. It seriously was supposed to be just another day at the office. I was minding my own business, pining away for Jennifer Aniston and playing Tetris while pretending to work on my TPS reports.

Now, I am told that one of my colleagues, Peter Gibbons, was put in this exact situation, and he just got hypnotized and felt better. I, on the other hand, was handed a coach-class ticket to this ramblin’ little town, where I’ve been asked to oversee a lynch mob bent on ridding themselves of three unknown evildoers in their midst.

I guess this is what the world will look like if I don’t do my part in preventing the Y2K crash.

I jumped at the noise, and realized from the sound my feet made against the ground that I was standing on a piece of paper. I picked it up, read it, and realized that my arrival was so belated that the murderers hidden within the town had had enough time to scrawl this taunting clue to the town:

Wake up in the morning feeling like P-Did—no, that’s not right.

Well, maybe some of you do feel like P-Diddy at the moment. But you’re probably more interested right now in figuring out who has gone to be with Tupac and Biggie instead.

I woke up in my super-deluxe Motel 6 room (where they don’t leave the light on for you) after a particularly nightmarish dream wondering why we had to settle on killing everyone through mob justice rather than, say, sending the people we thought were scum to a Federal Pound-Me-In-The-Ass Prison. But I’m pretty sure it was this kind of thinking that got me sent out to this small, Podunk (strike) proud little town to begin with, worried that a shadowy evildoer will arrive with a bullet that has my name on it. I probably shouldn’t have come here unarmed, but what was I going to do, arriving here straight from work? Take my stapler?

A knock on my door brought me out of my reverie. When I went to the door, there was nobody there, but taped to the door, I found yet another note. It read:

Each night, more of you will face death by gun
Tonight, it was DH, who’d hide but could not run
But also Surye, the town’s most learned one
As well as Chesskid, for whom we have no pun
(as ”Princeton’s Pride” is not a monosyllabic word that rhymes with ‘un’)

Accusations flew back and forth all day. At first, it looked like the town was going nowhere--I was about to step up and suggest that maybe they hire this pair of consultants I've had some dealings with. They're great at

saving money for evil, soulless corporations

catching scumz, and hey, if they have giant mancrushes on Michael Bolton, dealwithit. At least the guy was funny on Saturday Night Live.

But just as I was about to address the crowd, people began to point at toffee and scream, "Scum!" She looked around, and told everyone they had jumped to that conclusion way too fast--they should have used her "Jump to Conclusions" mat instead to make a more sound decision.

I don't think I need to tell you how persuasive the lynch mob found that defense.

After the town had strung toffee up, I was actually at a loss. There was no note from the mafia to be had, so I reluctantly turned back to my super-deluxe motel 6 room (ironically enough, I am writing this from a motel 6 room IRL) to watch some cheesy kung fu and maybe look up the word "money laundering" in the dictionary for shits n' giggles.

When I arrived, though, I found what I had been waiting for--slid under my door was another note. It read:

Today, you may have been on the right path
But now prepare to face the final two's wrath
We shall turn this town yet into an epic bloodbath
So that we might finally have the last laugh

I tried to sleep soundly tonight with the knowledge that a third of the mafia faction had been dispatched, but deep down, I knew it would only make them more bloodthirsty for revenge. In the middle of my sleepless night, I could hear a couple of voices from the parking lot outside of my super-deluxe motel 6 room (where I am not writing from ATM IRL, thank G-d). I couldn’t be sure, but this is what the conversation sounded like…

“Amrun.”
“Fancy seeing you here at this hour.”
“Yes, well, I’ve had a lot on my mind.”
“Really, like what?”
“Oh, the usual stuff. My choice in careers, mostly.”

“Well, my high school guidance counselor used to ask us what you'd do if you had a million dollars and you didn't have to work. And invariably what you'd say was supposed to be your career. So, if you wanted to fix old cars then you're supposed to be an auto mechanic.”

Amrun had done the town one huge favor in trying to make amends for her shot on Surye. In the span of one day and night, town’s mafia had been reduced to a single member. I was now surprised by the unanimity of the town—whereas they had been so sharply divided just a couple short days ago over

DeityKabuto, they quickly came to the consensus that there could only be one person who was that final Mafioso…

“Smashbro! We know who you are! Just give us the name of

“But…I’m not scumbuddies with toffee and Newman! They’re so good at crime and I would suck so badly at it!”

But short order, Smashbro was quickly strung up and led to the gallows at the center of the town square. I still didn’t know for sure if the town was on the right track, but then I realized something…there has been no note. That could only mean one thing…

“SCUM!” everyone shouted at Smashbro.

“Wait, wait,” protested Smashbro. “This isn't Riyadh. You’re not gonna

It might have been an even worse defense than toffee’s “Jump to Conclusions” masterpiece. But then, elevated on those gallows, Smashbro must have seen the look of recognition on my face, because he immediately reached into his coat and pulled out a revolver, and aiming it at me, shouted,

“DAMN IT FEELS GOOD TO BE A GANGSTER!”

And that’s all I remember.

I am told by St. Peter that Smashbro was immediately lynched afterwards, and when the remaining townspeople approached my body to see if I could confirm for them Smashbro’s scumminess, don_johnson knelt down and opened my right hand, where I had reached for a pen to document this lynch, as I had the others. Don then eyed the town, and proclaimed,

“Looks red to me.”

The mod’s thoughts:

The way this game unfolded makes me even more convinced that Hard Boiled is a rather swingy setup. Some time ago, ABR (the setup’s creator) suggested in the open setup MD thread that one of the goons should be a Mafia rolecop. Given that, to my knowledge, this is the first time town has won with this setup, I don’t think scum need a lot of help. If anything, I’d add an extra VT to give town the extra mislynch, because basically, town was at MyLo on D2. In a 12-person game, that should never, ever happen, regardless of how sub-optimal the town’s play was.

I also think this swinginess can best be encapsulated by the play of Amrun. Full disclosure—I have a ton of confidence in Amrun’s abilities. I’ve had to play scum against her twice, hated it both times, and lost both times. But her play between D1/N1 and D2/N2 was like the proverbial black and white. I said this to Magua in the mod QT, but I’m not sure why players seem to choose vig over tracker in this setup—IMO, tracker is a much more helpful role for the town, and Amrun’s vig choice nearly lost the game for the town. But at the same time, I think Amrun vigging Newman pretty much sealed the town victory, and with a confirmed town (Scott) on D3, it pretty much came down to PoE in finding the final scum.

I think scum were hurt by toffee’s relative inactivity (no offense, toffee)—Smashbro and Newman were playing alright on D1, and their PR reads on N1 were actually pretty good. But when toffee flipped, connecting the dots became pretty easy.

Speaking of which, this is the second time in a row I’ve seen RC pull out a VCA that absolutely nailed the final scum in a game. Well played. I also thought MuffinMan replacing in was a boon for the town, he took over a slightly shaky playslot and played a solid town game. I do think scum were hurt somewhat by having a very experienced town core that survived to endgame (RC, Scott, and Don).

I DID fuck up once—when scum were asking about the deadline in the QT, I said that if a replacement was found, Day Two would begin as scheduled, which, as Magua pointed out to me, inadvertently implied (correctly) that nameloc’s slot was VT. If scum are okay with the QT being posted, you’ll see my error there. Derp. Lesson learned.

I also never actually intended to give this game an Office Space flavor, it just sorta happened. I was trying to think of a funny way to explain my transition into the game, and the first thing that came to mind was the scene from Office Space where Lumberg tells Peter that they lost some folks and need to play catch-up. So I just ran with it.

Other than that, though…yeah, this was my first modded game (@MS, anyways), so thoughts? Feedback? Comments? Rude gestures?

Finally, thanks to Magua, who stepped in as my backup mod for this game. He was both patient and generous with his advice to a first-time mod, and I am very much appreciative of his help.

AFAIK, yes, this is the first Hard Boiled that town has won. At least, all the games listed on the Hard Boiled wiki page ended with scum wins.

And the less that is spoken about that last Hard Boiled game, the better.

I just think vig is an overrated and overused PR.

Also, thank you for the kind feedback on my modding, but y'all also made the game run very smoothly; I want to say (a churlishly belated) thank you to all of you for your commitment to this game despite having your original mod flake—only having to find a replacement for one playslot and not having to issue a single prod all game made my job a lot easier.
