The town was pensive. The verdict was unambiguous; even as Mr. Smith swung creakily from the gallows above, it was becoming quite clear that he was not one of the evildoers that had infiltrated the formerly peaceful village.

As the sun slipped below the horizon, many of the townspeople retired to their houses, to sleep away a fitful night with only the hope that they would still be alive in the coming dawn.

But not all.

Here and there, some stayed only briefly at their houses, gathering robes and masks, candles and charms. They assembled in their small groups in cellars and barns, whispering to eachother the words of invocation and initiation. Signs were given, handshakes were made.

And in the gutteral flickering of candlelight, hidden from the prying eyes of the outsiders, each secret society plotted its next move.

I. Rules

  6. We're all here to have fun. Tempers may flare, but avoid personal attacks and keep it civil.
  7. Do not edit or delete your posts in this thread.
  8. Do not quote or link private communications, including Role PMs, Quicktopics, etc. (This rule is waived wherever alignment is confirmed, such as scum or mason QTs.)
  9. Do not use cryptography, invisible text, tiny text, or the like.
  10. Do not use any form of provable randomness. Claiming you rolled dice and acting on that is fine.

  13. Do not bring outside factors into this game. This includes making bets, promises of real life rewards, etc.
  14. Do not pretend to break one of these rules. Pretending to break a rule will be treated the same as breaking the rule.
  15. Breaking one of these rules may result in a modkill. If you are modkilled, you may become a Neutral Survivor, and thus automatically lose. Modkilling may or may not end the Day.

    - The Activity Rules
  16. Each player is expected to post at least once every 72 real life hours. If a player goes 72 real life hours without posting, they may be prodded.
  17. If a player does not respond to their prod within 24 real life hours, is prodded twice in the same Day, or three times in total within the game, they may be force-replaced.
  18. If you will be V/LA, please alert me in the thread or via PM. I do not read the V/LA thread.
  19. This game uses bankable Day deadlines.
    The Days will have the following deadlines: D1 - 14 days, D2 - 12 days, D3 - 10 days, D4 - 8 days, D5 and beyond - 7 days. Time not used on a Day is added to the subsequent Day's deadline. In the event deadline is reached before a lynch has occurred, no lynch will occur.
  20. Each Night will have a deadline of three real life days. If a player has a Night action, but does not submit a choice before deadline, they will perform no action. I accept conditional or prearranged actions.
  21. I may extend deadlines in the event replacements must be found.

    - The Voting Rules
  22. Votes must be bolded to count, and in the format of VOTE: Magua. Abbreviations, missing punctuation, and misspellings will be accepted as long as the vote is bolded and it is obvious to me who is being voted for.
  23. Unvoting is nice, but is not necessary.
  24. Once a majority of votes is reached (# of players / 2 + 1, rounded down), that player will be lynched and dead as of the next vote count. No further votes or unvotes will be counted.
  25. If you are dead, that is it. Do not post. Not even a "Bah" post.

  26. You may VOTE: No Lynch. It still requires a majority to end the Day before deadline.


II. Setup Rules and Information

  1. This setup contains both Mafia and Werewolves.
    1. They have daytalk.

  2. At least one person has received this Role PM:

    Murder has come to your formerly sleepy village; friends and neighbors, some you’ve known for years, have both been viciously slaughtered, while others have been revealed to be amoral killers. It is up to you to drive the evil out of city and restore the peace.

    : You win when everyone alive wins with the Town, and at least one player is alive.

  3. There are Secret Societies in this game.
    1. A Secret Society is like a Neighborhood, which may have Night actions or other abilities at their disposal.
    2. All Secret Societies have a Night-talk QT, and may induct new members.
    3. The Mafia and Werewolf factions are not considered to be Secret Societies.
    4. A player may only be in one Secret Society at a time. A player may leave the Secret Society they are in by PMing the mod during the Day. They will leave at the end of the Day.
    5. Each Secret Society has a means of determining its leader, which is the player who is allowed to use the Secret Society’s abilities for that Night.
    6. Some Secret Societies may use votes to determine the leader. If this is the case, voting is as so:
      1. Votes are PMed to the mod during the Day. Votes may be cast for any member of the Secret Society, or for “No one.” By default, everyone starts voting for themselves.
      2. There is no “hammer”: voting simply ends when the Day does, and votes may be changed at any point until then.
      3. Votes will be counted and posted in the Secret Society QT at the end of the Day -- only the votes of players still alive and still members of the Secret Society at that point will be counted.
      4. The player who receives the most votes will win, even if it’s not a majority. In the case of a tie, the earliest last vote will be the tiebreaker; random.org will break ties otherwise.

    7. If a Secret Society’s membership changes, its existing Quicktopic will be closed and a new one will be opened. Quoting or linking previous Quicktopics is forbidden under rule I.7; paraphrasing is, as usual, allowed.
    8. The following is a Secret Society PM that does not exist in this game:

      As a member of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster (hereafter: CotFSM), you gain access to the following:

      CotFSM Knowledge:
      The current members of the CotFSM are XXX, YYY, and ZZZ.

      CotFSM Communication (P):
      You may speak with fellow members of the CotFSM during the Night in a Quicktopic here.

      CotFSM Leadership (P):
      The members of the CotFSM vote during the Day on who will be able to use an ability, as described in II.3.f.

      CotFSM Abilities:
      Each Night, the leader of the CotFSM may perform one of these abilities. The ability used (and any targets) may be stated in the Quicktopic or PMed to the mod -- in the case where both are done, the one PMed to the mod takes precedence.
      • Induction (A):
        Choose up to three players who are not already members of the CotFSM. The first one in the list that is eligible will join the CotFSM at the start of the next Night.
      • Noodly Appendage (A):
        Choose another player. They will receive a PM at the beginning of the next Day informing them they have been touched by the Flying Spaghetti Monster’s noodly appendage.
      • Behold! (A):
        This may be used only once during the game. It will be publicly announced. All players who have been touched by the Flying Spaghetti Monster’s noodly appendage will have their role (but not alignment) publicly revealed. Both “Goon” and “Vanilla Townie” will be revealed as “Vanilla.”
      • Boiled for Their Sins (A):
        If there are five or more members of the CotFSM, choose another player who is not a member of the CotFSM. If this player is of the same alignment as you, you will be killed. If this player is of a different alignment from you, they will be killed.


  4. Role abilities are all categorized into one of these categories:
    (P) - Passive. This ability is always in effect and cannot be roleblocked.
    (A) - Active. This ability must be activated to be used.
    (FA) - Factional Active. This ability must be activated to be used.
  5. A player may only use one (A) or (FA) ability each Night, even if they have multiple abilities allowed to them, with one exception: if there is only one living member of an anti-Town faction, they may use both an (A) and a (FA) ability on the same Night.
  6. In the case of multiple Roleblockers interacting, all roleblocks are simultaneous (roleblocking cannot itself be roleblocked).
  7. Limited Flip Info: Death flips will include role and alignment, but not kill flavor or Secret Society.
  8. This setup does not contain jesters, or any mechanic that changes win conditions.
  9. Amended in #1450: If a Day starts with a single Town player and a single anti-Town player, the Town player will be endgamed.

Role PMs are going out now. Day 1 will start when there are 20 of 25 confirmations.

Those who have a QT with daytalk may, of course, speak in it at any point during the game.

Everyone else with a QT may speak in it during the confirmation phase, and for the first 72 hours of D1.

Ghostlin is V/LA until 9/28.

There was a general confusion and brouhaha in the town square. Too many different mobs of people with too many different points of view, too many different ulterior motives.

All throughout the day, suspicion would land on someone or other, but without adequate momentum, without adequate drive. It wasn't until the sun was already embracing the horizon and dusk was beginning to settle that a new sentiment took over the crowd. A fire burned in their eyes, and it burned for IceGuy.

"Explain yourself!" someone snarled.

IceGuy explained himself.

"Not good enough! e's a murderer!" came a cry from the mob. Several people moved to surround IceGuy, to hold him down and tie the rope around his neck, but in all of the chaos and the confusion, the deed was already done before anyone had rightly noticed.

IceGuy swung in the still evening air, but it was already clear that he was not one of the murderers plaguing the village.

TheJakalope was impassive in the face of his accusers. Even as they shouted for his blood, he stared them down silently. It was more than a little unnerving, but it did not stop the clamoring.

And then, in the midst of the shouting, he would say a sentence, answer a factual question, before resuming his taciturn ways, leaving the arguments against him unanswered, as if issuing a challenge to the crowd at large.

The crowd took him up on it. "Let's put him up on the gallows, see if that loosens his tongue!" yelled Alabaska J. "Let's see if he'll answer the questions if we tie this noose around his neck!" bellowed ToastyToast. Soon TheJakalope was standing over the trapdoor, but he still did not deign to answer the charges against him.

"Let's break his neck and see if that gets him talking!" added David Xanatos, giggling quietly to himself as he pulled the lever.

It didn't.

However, as TheJakalope swung, scrabbling at the noose around his neck, he began to change and shift, growing hairier and more bestial. Within seconds, it was obvious that we had finally put one of the murderers to their well deserved death.

Dawn broke, and it was not long before the first to head towards the town square found zMuffinMan's body. Clutched tightly to his chest was a book, as if he had given his life to protect it...but it was far too late to tell now what information may have been writ on its pages, as his spilled blood had soaked the tome thoroughly, obliterating whatever knowledge might have held within.

So even TheJakalope's death had not caused the malefactors in our midst to depart our village. We gathered in the square, determined to punish them anew.

It was a long day.

As the sun burned down into the village square, accusations were made while alibis were prepared.

As the hours ticked on, suspicion kept returning again and again to Maxous. He tried to laugh off the aspersions being cast on his name, but they were persistent.

But in the end, Maxous relented and told the townspeople what they wanted to hear. The mob swung, now chanting sorgster's name.

sorgster was dutifully noosed, and was being led to the gallows. However, just before he could step onto the fateful trap door, Oversoul pulled the lever and said, "That's it, I killed him." General confusion followed, with even sorgster believing he was already dead, and complaining that the afterlife didn't look at all different.

Eventually, the crowd pieced together that sorgster wasn't actually dead. Global Warming stood up and pointed at Maxous, and quick as a flash, the mob had him strung up as sorgster had been just a moment before.

This time, when StefanB stepped up to pull the lever, there was death.

The sun rose over the village; the rooster crowed; we assembled.

After the death of the second Werewolf, we had went to our beds (...or not) in a spirit of optimism, but we found ourselves awoken with more evidence that the murderers amongst us were not yet vanquished.

Alabaska J was found in his kitchen, slumped over a carton of melted ice cream, still clutching a spoon in his hand with which to partake of his midnight snack.

DarthYoshi took longer to locate, but eventually the secret room in his basement was found. He was sprawled across a map of the village, obviously at one point painstakingly marked with symbols and lines, now all but obliterated by his blood.

The sky was full of reds, oranges, purples fading to black. The crowd looked around anxiously, desperate to return to their homes before the cloak of night had fallen.

David Xanatos had stood near the edge of the gallows for most of the day. He was distant, perhaps contemplative, though it was truly hard to tell.

In truth, he might have stood near those gallows 'till Judgment Day, had evening not forced the hand of the mob. As the last of the colors faded into greys, Wraith stood and pulled the lever, and even before the last of David's spasms had ceased, the crowd had near fully melted away.

We each awoke in our beds, in varying degrees of selfishness glad that we were still alive. We dressed and broke bread, and made our various ways to the town square.

Each turn along the path, we expected to come across a corpse, but continued to find ourselves pleasantly surprised that the streets were bloodless. There were no mangled corpses along the way, and as the procession towards the square increased in size, we evidenced more and more surprise at the lack of tragedy.

For a moment, when we arrived at the square, this sense of solace was shattered, because there was a body before us. But it was quickly evident that it was a monster's body, covered in hair and claws, and after we determined it was quite dead, we were cheered even more as we began to tie another noose.

To celebrate our good fortune over the events of the previous night, we all decided to whip up a feast -- a way that we could give thanks, as it were, for those things that we were appreciative of. We had turkey, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie. Truly, it was a glorious meal.

While we gorged ourselves, the question kept coming back around to who we were going to lynch today, which put some people off their appetites. "sorgster!" shouted some; "Dry-fit!" shouted others.

"The sooner we lynch Dry-fit," Otolia solemnly intoned, "The sooner we can have pie!"

But before someone could pull the lever, it was discerned that Dry-fit was already dead. And that he wasn't a murderer.

It was still really good pie, though.

It was just before dawn, oranges and reds mottling the sky. A beautiful montage, fit for a picturesque postcard or an artist's study. Sadly, it was broken by the scream.

We ran into the streets, some of us still in our pyjamas, some of us...ahem...not...to find the bloody mess that was Yosarian2. There was a trail of crimson on the cobblestones from where he'd tried to drag himself forward with his one still working hand, but it was obviously a lost cause.

As blood bubbled from his lips, we leaned closely to hear his last words. "Must," he gasped, the liquid in his lungs quite audible as he gasped for breath. "Not let," followed by a choking, "Them," and then a rattle and silence.

We covered Yosarian2 in a sheet, and then, with the sun breaking over the horizon, proceeded to the town square for the business of the day.

So, yeah. Tigers attacked the site, causing us to lose all the data between November 29th and February 25th (or so). The game had ended on January 6th, so it lost approximately 6 weeks of data -- Days 6 through 9. That data is probably not getting retrieved, but I do have the final lynch scene, where Global Warming was lynched at the end of Day 9, and then the mod notes:


"I'm a warlock," Global Warming said. "Here, let me prove it to you!" He performed some mod-confirmed tricks.

But the crowd was not impressed.

"Burn 'im! 'e's a witch!" came a scream from the back of the (admittedly very small by this point) crowd. But with all the murders and lynchings and dead bodies and lack of sleep from all the screams, it was enough to whip the crowd into a frenzy, and before Global Warming could secret his rainbow colored scarves or switch the hat-that-didn't-contain-the-bunny for the hat-that-did-contain-the-bunny, he was already up on the gallows and whispersilk was pulling the lever while ToastyToast philosoraptored to
himself.

The crowd made to disperse after the grisly deed was completed, but there were those who had other thoughts. Otolia and StefanB were making their way to the hidden cellar where the Order of the Knights Templar had been meeting for the last few days when they noticed they were being followed.

"How peculiar," Otolia thought to himself.
"How odd," StefanB thought to himself.

They turned around to confront their pursuers, with a very condescending, "I say, old chaps, don't you have somewhere else to b..." but the two gunshots quickly put an end to their complaints.<br><br>Their pursuers pumped a few more bullets into them. Just to make sure.

They swept through the remnants of the village easily, dispatching those they came upon with ease before reconvening at the village square, where
they made their reports.

"That's it. We've got everyone," one said.

"Almost everyone," another corrected. "No one killed Empking's Alt."

This was hurriedly confirmed amongst the group. None of them had seen Empking's Alt since he had started climbing the gallow steps earlier in
the day, making vague threats to hang himself.

They checked their weapons and paid a visit to his residence, where they found him packing a small travel bag. Clothes, some documents, not much: traveling
light.

"Going somewhere?" one of them taunted Empking's Alt, brandishing a pistol to show that he was not, in fact, going to be going anywhere.

"Yes," Empking's Alt replied, checking his watch. Ignoring the brandished weapons, he snapped his case shut, and headed towards the front door, completely nonchalantly.

The others were caught off guard by this behavior, and startled, took a moment before following him into the front yard. This time, weapons were pointed in earnest. "I don't think you understand what's going on here..." one began.

"No, I understand completely," Empking's Alt replied, "And I thank you for the part that you played, but I have other work to attend to now." He looked up into the sky.

Mumbling something about the crazies, the group raised their weapons as one to aim at Empking's Alt, right as the black helicopters descended.

Whisper-quiet, they made only the tiniest noise as they hovered over the yard, a rope ladder being thrown down to Empking's Alt. Various vehicular-mounted weapons aimed at the mafia persuaded them not to interfere as Empking adroitly climbed the ladder, and then the black helicopters were gone into the night, leaving the mafia a little confused about what, exactly,
had just happened, but claiming the village as their prize nonetheless.

The Valiant Order decided to rename themselves pregame to the Elucidated Brethren of the Ebon Night. Inducted members received a PM where "Valiant Order of St. George" was replaced with "Elucidated Brethren of the Ebon Night", and "St. George" was replaced with "Elucidated Brethren", but in my notes and the original Role PMs they are still referred to as the Valiant Order.

Mod Thoughts

The two-minute setup overview:

This game grew out of a draft of a Masons and Monks Large Normal I was planning on running back in the day, except that the Masons and Monks could Neighborize if they so desired. Unfortunately, it didn't fit Large Normal guidelines, so it got shelved and I ran Marketplace Mafia instead. I then revisited this as a Large Theme, the Masons became the Freemasons, the Monks became the Valiant Order of St. George, and things got a lot more complicated.

Overall, the town had little intrinsic power, with the idea that most of the power would come from the societies. Jack of All Trades, Tracker, and Doctor are all decent roles that provided some oomph but aren't going to carry things on their own in a Large Theme of this size; Medium and Doublevoter were essentially very cornercase-useful roles, and functioned more like named townies.

I wanted to avoid symmetric scumteams, so the Werewolves got the better PRs (Tracker, Roleblocker), but the worse initial society placement (the Goon was a Knights Templar). The Mafia got less-useful PRs (Odd-Night Doctor, Even-Night Watcher -- this was deliberate to prevent the Mafia from finding a PR N1), but much better society placement, including their own society, essentially (the Doctor in the Valiant Order, and the Goon was the only starting Rosicrucian). Through the Valiant Order, they also got to know off the bat two people who weren't Werewolves.

I felt the scumteams were underpowered at 3-3-19, but all of my reviewers said that 4-4-17 was way too scumsided (I was very surprised to see The Fonz say during the game he thought that was the norm, compared to my reviewers). Various combinations of traitors and weakened roles were tried, but eventually I settled on the Illuminatus role for simplicity's sake. (In earlier drafts, the Illuminatus was an SK. My reviewers laughed.)




The ten-second society overview:

Each society could induct, which is described in more detail below.

Every society had a power that they could use with 5 members. With 5 societies, it was not expected that many of these powers would ever actually get used, or would be usable more than once.

The societies other than the Freemasons and the Valiant Order also had a 3 member power, and a one-shot power. The one-shot powers were of questionable use -- clever players could find a use for them, but they were very much on the weak side.

Freemasons: The anti-Mafia secret society. Each of the starting Freemasons was confirmed non-Mafia to eachother. If they had five people, they could start copping people to determine if they were Mafia or not. Incidentally, the Freemasons were the only society that started with more than one person that started all Town (though they didn't know this at the time). Sadly, the Freemasons were cursed with absolutely terrible luck -- their N1 inductions were blocked, and they got shot N1 (twice, though one was Doctor-saved), N2, and N3.

Valiant Order of St. George: The anti-Werewolf secret society. Like the Freemasons, the starting members were confirmed non-Werewolf to eachother, and if they had five people they could start seering people to determine if they were Werewolf or not. The Mafia started with a member here, so knew two confirmed non-Werewolves amongst the town. The Valiant Order was the only one that ever got five people in it -- Alabaska J successfully seered Oversoul the Night that he died.

Order of the Knights Templar: The jailkeeping society. With three members they could jailkeep; with five they could rolecop, and their one-shot power was to treestump. The Werewolves started with a member here, which in theory would give them a leg up on who might be protected or roleblocked, but the society (quite wisely) didn't provide that information and the society was never scum-controlled. The ability for the leader to self-protect was added in to dissuade the Werewolves from just killing off the leaders.

Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn: Ah, the vig society. With three members they could kill; with five they could daykill, and their one-shot power to mod-confirm the society and its members. Balancing this one was tricky, because of the swing inherent in the power, especially if scum got control of it. This is why Aleister Crowley started in the society alone, why he had complete control over who the leader was while he was alive, and why he was a limited bulletproof (more on that later). Sadly, the Hermetic Order was plagued by induction problems, and only had one available shot through the game, at which point is was already too late: N2, N3, and N6 had the Hermetic Order beaten out by the Knights Templar and the Freemasons for recruits, and N5 saw Bogre inducted but he was lynched D6.

Rosicrucians: The godfather society. With three members they could follow, with five they could wonkily restrict kills, and they had a one-shot power to friendly neighbor someone. The catch, of course, is that the sole starting member was Mafia. The design was that the Mafia could simply quit the society if they so chose (it being a somewhat potent anti-scum tool), or they could leverage their sole-starting-membership as a towntell in the same way that Aleister Crowley in theory could.




Inductions:

All societies could induct, and the inductions all worked the same way. The order of priority for the inductions was Freemasons > Valiant Order of St. George > Order of the Knights Templar > Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn > Rosicrucians. The #1 picks were done first, then the #2, then the #3, so the #1 pick of the Rosicrucians took precedence over the #2 pick of the Freemasons. Trackers and watchers would see all induction attempts, successful or not.

So then there's the mechanic that people inducted aren't informed until the next Night. This had a convoluted evolution:

Originally, inductions would occur, and people would be inducted, and if there were multiple attempts they would be informed of all of them.

I knew that I wanted one action per person per Night -- that is, I knew that I wanted PRs (and scum) to have an incentive to not want to be leader because they'd already be using their PR/kill. Inductions presented a problem then, especially late game, because they were confirmable actions that could clear someone as not having performed a kill. I imagined a scenario were someone would leave a society and then demand that every society attempt to induct them, and it made even a 1-member society useful because of the confirmable action.

These were not things that I wanted.

So I moved the notifications from the end of the Night to the beginning of the next one. But this produced a lot of confusion (see the Bogre lynch, where where Bogre says he wasn't recruited, and Global Warming and Ghostlin, who tried to induct him, take this as some sort of scumtell).




What Didn't Work:

Leadership mechanics:
These pretty much didn't work at all. Originally, the societies would determine their targets and receive their reports communally; however, that public way of doing things made it impossible for the scum to subvert -- I wanted something that would be a more private, so came up with the idea of having a leader, but this presented the next question of how to select the leader. Voting seemed ideal, so I went with that for the majority of the societies.

The problem is that virtually no one ever submitted a vote. MagnaoIllusion did D1, Ghostlin did D3 for Global Warming, and ToastyToast selected Empking to friendly neighbor someone D7. That was literally it.

Two of the societies selected on things other than votes: The Valiant Order selected on the number of scum-lynch-wagons people were on, and the Knights Templar selected on lynch votes at the end of the Day. In theory, a member of the Knights Templar could self-vote and then self-protect -- for at least half of the game, no member of the Knights Templar had any votes on them at the end of the game. Yet this never occurred.

So what actually happened in the vast majority of cases is that random.org broke ties, which was a huge letdown to me and made an element of randomness that I expected to be very rare actually very common.

Not sure what the proper answer is here (perhaps select the leaders communally the Night before?), but it wasn't what this game used.

Aleister Crowley's Bulletproof:
So Crowley was Bulletproof to prevent a very lucky N1 shot from leaving the society in scum hands, essentially. The desire was that at least the first shot from the society would be town-controlled. Unfortunately, due to the way the inductions (didn't) work, Global Warming ended up being Bulletproof up until N8 (which I had never actually considered a possibility). That was not the desired goal. I realized this was a problem around D4, and was the reason I added on the 1v1 endgame rule in #1450.

This was just sloppiness on my part. I don't like full-Bulletproof town, and the inclusion of this one was a mistake. Should've expired N3 or when the Hermetic Order had 3 members, whichever came first.
