for what it's worth, I've played numerous times with the idea of not letting players unvote. But because some weird segment of the population cannot get over the idea that unvoting isn't required to vote a new player, it caused more confusion than it's worth.
So that's where "Accelerated Start," which farside used in her Dating Mafia 1 but in a very different form than what I had suggested, came from.

I'd like to make a small suggestion: change the format to mostly be discussion first then mashups following it. A lead in song is okay... a 2-3 minute interlude song to separate topics is good, but the long segments that vary in length make it kind of hard to listen to. I love music and I enjoy knowing the difference in taste a lot of people have, but... I feel like it detracts from the general experience and is something that makes me less likely to want to tune in, especially live where I can't skip forward.
Anyway, it's your show Reck, so you can do whatever you want, but I figured I'd put out my opinion for what it's worth. I actually think you'll get more listeners who listen more carefully to your show... and if you do 2-3 minute interludes, I think you'll actually get more people listening to your music because they won't tune it out waiting for the relevant discussion.

Well, that's kind of why I suggested putting the music at the end. You don't get rid of it, but you get the discussion part up front. If it makes the talk portion of the show only 30 minutes, that doesn't seem like a bad thing. It also might make it easier to find a more diverse selection of guests since the time demand on it changes from being 80 minutes or so to 30.
That said, I appreciate the challenge behind finding unique things to talk about each week.
Have you considered, in addition to having sort of guest decided topics and topics you're interested in, having recurring short segments? For example, do a "game analysis" where you pick a recently finished game and talk about that? I know you do this to some degree already (e.g. Goofbash Invitational last week), but you could probably get 5 minutes out of that and it probably spurs on other discussion without having to think about anything really unique. It'd also increase the chances of individuals hearing their names mentioned in the program, and that'll increase listenership if you mention what game is going to be covered beforehand (and possibly even mention it in the game thread). I also think that might make the show feel a little broader in its nature since it'd force you to do games that you weren't necessarily in. The only difficulty with that specific recurring segment is that you get the best discussion if your guests will have skimmed the thread (or played in it) beforehand.

fair enough. I guess I just find the specific mafia discussion parts the most interesting, but that follows my general practice of not paying much attention to the other parts of MS.

I don't know reck. If you're really looking to make that into a thing with more serious discussion, etc. I think a new show will fit better rather than trying to shoehorn it into the same format.
Instead, you could do a Cartoon Network/Adult swim kind of thing. Have a separate show with a different format but use the same time slot to do it. So, like... the first three weeks of the month are M&M, the last is Scummies Discussion or whatever more appealing title is used.

When I was thinking of possible recurring segments I actually thought about a segment where each player picks a post by someone else that's dumb, weird, whatever from a game and then reads it with all the false gravitas they can lend it....

Yeah, that's a good point CES. If I run the game again with the move mechanic staying the same (and I think I would... I like the way that worked even if there were other parts that I didn't love), I'll call it a "priority" move.

I suspect that's supposed to stand in for all variety of unforeseeable major life events that happen from time to time. Although I guess wife leaving you usually is somewhat foreseeable. DON'T SIGN UP IF YOUR MARRIAGE IS ON THE ROCKS

for what it's worth, I call the next show that hitogoroshi signs up for. also, I promise to try hard not to use my "you know" verbal crutch as much next time. the combination of theoretical discussion combined with being pretty unprepared and just talking out of my ass...

yeah, that's me. I'm not huge into the gossipy stuff.* that said, I'm scheduled with Faraday, and I plan on springing something on him. It'll only be somewhat satisfying though because his microphone and/or internet connection is so awful.

Yeah, and I'll be sure to bring Almost No Rules Mafia up as I enjoyed running that game, but my point will be less about allowing third parties to talk about the game and more about people within the game.

Decorum Mafia
All posts must start with "Mr. Moderator," and thereafter direct all comments to the moderator, using only the third person to refer to someone else. This must be done in formulastic terms: "The gentleman Faraday appears to be suggesting that..." and "I would respond to the respected JDodge that..."
actually... might make for a fun post restriction.
