i think that's a reasonable way to do it, it makes sense to want to reserve one's 12 for the most excitingly good new song
no rules on the subject, but my personal approach goes like this:
-if it's a song that's super well known, I won't vote for it even if I love it (eg: Bohemian Rhapsody, Uptown Funk)
-if it's a song that I personally like but it's not super well known, I rank it a few spots lower than where I'd normally rank it in the contest (eg: anything by FKA Twigs or BTBAM)

I mean you already know this but you can assign your points however you want without justification.
I don't agree with "it's popular so I will downrate it to compensate". It's not like Carry On Wayward Son has gotten worse because people have heard of it. (That said, I've heard of virtually nothing so this rarely applies in my world.)
I also don't agree with "I already know I like this so I will downrate it to compensate"; I already know I vote for novelty over styles I'm already familiar with so there's no need to deliberately push that effect further.
When comparing entries, when in doubt I ask which one I'd rather listen to again.
Everything you say and do matters. People will respond in ways you may never see. May those responses be what you intend.

i kinda liked the song. gave me linkin park vibes? it's the sort of thing where i would put a couple of bangers from the genre on a playlist but certainly couldn't fill a playlist with it.
Fair enough. My preferred style of music is rock/metal that belongs to or sounds like it could belong to the 2000s. And yes, same lead singer as linkin park

This is totally valid. I treat the contest as a place for new music* so I feel less inclined to give points to songs that most people have heard. It's just a difference on our goals with the contest, I guess you could say.
*new = music I haven't heard before

i have to admit i downrated that entry somewhat because it was making fun of my beloved eurovision, a cultural institution that a) is, yes, off the rails; b) serves up some incredible diva bangers sometimes; c) is a legitimately good time; d) has some excellent electoral entertainment and e) will pay for robbing dami im
And yay, I'm very happy noname did so well! I wasn't really expecting her to do so well. So yay
Oh and Vi - There was no trauma in listening! Not being allowed to listen to much music or celebrate halloween are two things from my childhood that I find amusing more than anything else.

I do the opposite, if you submit something I've heard and love, have my points and I will not pretend otherwise. I like finding new good music here, but I also admit that if someone submits something that's already in my odd wheelhouse, I'm gonna jam with it and find it hard to take away from that.
Ski mask? Check! Sawed off? Check! Guilty conscience, fear of death? Check! Check! Check!

The movie felt pretty on point actually! More of a homage to Eurovision's wackiness rather than making fun of it. There are definitely better songs than this one (my home town is solid) but I really liked this one too
