i've been enjoying historic brawl lately, i like that i don't know the meta

building around commanders is also a lot of fun

i play some commander but i enjoy multiplayer less

my first experience playing multiplayer (not counting high school) involved people explaining to me that we were playing a 5 player mode where each person tries to kill 2 players who are like their bounty targets, and the first play to complete that task is the sole winner, and I cast a red sweeper that killed 1 of my creatures, none of my bounty player's creatures, and 5 creatures of a player who was on the verge of eliminating both of his bounty targets, and he was furious at me for playing the game wrong.

my second experience playing multiplayer I doom bladed some legendary creature that would obviously snowball, and that player had 1 white mana up, and casted silence and insisted it countered the doom blade, caring more about a consensus of two players who had played it that way before more than my dry encyclopedic explanation of the definition of casting a spell.

yeah it's definitely dependent on the people you're playing with, even with a good playgroup it's too often kingmaker-y for me.

one deck that i've played against a couple times in historic brawl is illuna which has omniscience as the only permanent in their deck so they basically win if they resolve their commander. i'm empty handed with a ghostly pilferer in play and 5 mana open, and op casts illuna. i draw silundi vision and find a counter spell. the next time they cast their commander i responded with mystic subdual on the thing they mutated onto. that felt pretty good

guess i should not get hopes too high

there is a chance they try to continuously balance this format and update cards every two weeks so!

the telling thing will be whether or not there are any changes to cards next patch

and it will take me approximately that long to grind enough wild cards to play anyway

or at least to play what i would like to (very likely birgi/vadrik {as i would like to apply my dominion brain as much as possible and! birgi is pretty much the only magic card i like})

draft is difficult for me because i need an attachment to something to keep me engaged with it and because of the nature of draft it would have to be a common which wouldn't be impossible for me to develop simply that i have not previously though i've never attempted to be a dedicated limited player due to cost among other things

though your feeling isn't far off because what appeals to me most is building or at least building for the cards i want to play

as the actual playing becomes fairly rote once i learn the format and hone deck to reasonable state

and my halflife for the game has been quite short most likely for this reason

which is why i hope for frequent adjustments here but that may not be their intention it is very hard for me to tell

life // death is such a strange card. one half is pretty much just a downside, and the other half is a strong reanimation spell that's not quite good enough to see play anywhere. it's not legal in modern (and i'm wondering if it would see play as persist 5-6 in the reanimator decks), and in legacy there are just better options. in edh the higher-powered decks have better options, and budget players are unlikely to know of its existence.
