You can read days of conversation without the bias of your role PM, and come into the thread a super scumhunter.
In the past year or two, I've probably replaced into more games than I've joined outright.

In either case, if I replaced in the middle of the day, I wouldn't read my role PM until that night.

Because you know I'd be searching for scum.
Okay... so day 2 lets say. You'd been incredibly townie day one, but that doesn't matter. As you didn't read your role PM we might as well just treat it as though you began the game day 2

To add my two cents, sometime ago I replaced into a game (Newbie 845) and played for some time without reading my role PM (because I didn't get one). Zorblag later said it has, in fact, helped me in the game and gave me an advantage (was also the reason I declined a scummy nom for that game)
Bottom line, I agree with "against the spirit of the game" argument: you are not playing to win, while others can't properly analyse your play.

Not reading your role PM, while strategic, is against the spirit of the game. Just like how hacking the mod's account, reading their sent messages to find out all roles, and using the information to win would be strategically beneficial, but WAY against the spirit of the game.

(Note that I would never do that.)

is it against the spirit of the game to:
1. replace into a game shortly before deadline
2. lie and say that the mod has not sent you your role pm yet
3. give a bunch of reads on other players "before" you get your role pm

1. not sure how this relates to the question at hand. I'd say no.

2. lying is part of mafia

3. lying is part of mafia
don't you feel silly now?

No, I don't think doing that is against the spirit of the game, Adel.

For that matter, I don't think lying and claiming you haven't read your role PM is against the spirit of the game, only actually not reading your role PM.

Agreed, Yos. If scum claims they haven't read their role PM when they actually have, they're at least playing to their win condition. If Town does, then it's obviously a VI and will end up being lynched sometime anyway.
In the grand scheme of things, wins and losses are pointless. But I'm not the grand scheme, so die scum!

Yes, I have a wiki page. No, I'm not linking you to it.

If someone claims to not have read their role pm, then

1) They are telling the truth and all reads on the player up to the point they confess reading their role pm is null

OR

2) They are lying and does not have a town win condition

OR

3) They are lying and are a VI

In all 3 scenarios, the town is better off lynching the player.

Yes, that is entirely correct, I've made the exact same argument myself in games. At the very least the town needs to pressure the person until they read their role PM, and most likely until they roleclaim to demonstrate that they did, at that point.

There's no point in it; I'm always a V. Townie whenever I'm not a Town power role.

I hope that everyone in our game that is my first have read their pms because it sounds like a pretty bastard thing to do, not reading it. I know that when i moderate a game I'm gonna get players to pm me back with their role so i actually know that they have read it.
