Mini 931: Supreme Court Mafia (Game Over post 682)

Supreme Court Mafia

Today, the justices have assembled to hear the oral arguments for the case Michigan V. Fisher. The basic merits of the case is to decide if a police officer can enter a private residence without a warrant, if they have probable cause.

However, like must games of mafia, there is an anti-town faction who is/are bent on killing everyone else. And this game is no different.

As the justices go to sit down, each justice notices a piece of paper attached to each of their chairs.

“The days of our oppression is over. It is time for the unheard, the minority, to stand up and defend ourselves... defend our country. Everyone has been locked in this room with us. We have set timed bombs that would leak sleeping gas into the room. We have taken a pill that would make us immune. When you are all asleep, we will kill all of you. Oh, and by the way. By the time you read this, the first dose of sleeping gas has been seeping into the room. Good luck... you'll need it.

The justices look up with surprise and fear on their faces. Someone in this room is trying to kill them, but the only people in the room that are not justices are the two attorneys and the secret service agent.. the chances for one of their own to do be doing this is very hig...

And “everyone” passed out...

Rules:

General:

1) This is a game. Play for fun. Don't be rude to other players.

2) Play to win, but also to have fun. See rule 1.

3) I will post in red. No one else is to use red.

4) Do not quote any private communications with me or other players. Failure to adhere to this rule will result in modkill. If you have a question about whether something is acceptable, PM me.

5) You may not talk about this game outside the thread unless your role allows. When a player is killed, with the exception of a modkill, they will be given a link to a “green room.” In this room, you may chose to keep playing and discussing with other deceased players. If you have a partner/partners, do not disclose their name(s).

6) Do not edit or delete your posts. There are reasons for this, which I will explain if necessary. If I catch you, you will be modkilled.

7) Posting in twilight is acceptable, for both the lynchee and town members. Feel free to post as much or as little as you want of whatever you like.(Really blatant and unhealthy amounts of spam will probably be deleted, however.)

8) Once your death scene is posted, you may not talk. No ‘Bah’ post, or someone on your team will be punished for your screw-up.

9) If you fake breaking a rule, it will incur the same punishment as actually breaking the rule.

10) If you believe I have made a small mistake, for example, in a vote count, please point it out in thread. If you have a more serious grievance for some reason, PM me. Leave it out of the thread.

11) My word is final.

12) I reserve the right to add rules if necessary.

Activity:

13) I expect everyone to post every 48 hours (weekends are considered only 24hrs). Failure to do so will result in an activity prod. I will prod and if there is no post within 48 hours of prod you will be replaced. More than two prods in the same game day will result in a modkill or an instant replacement, in which I have sole discretion in picking the limit or consequence.

Voting/Deadline:

14) To vote. Please vote in bold as such.
vote: playerA
. You must unvote to vote again. You may also vote for a no lynch.

15) Deadline will be total players alive * 1.5 days rounded up (i.e. D1 18 days). If I feel it is warranted, an extension can be given, or a temporary deadline can also be given.

16) At deadline, the player with the most votes is lynched. If there is a tie, the player who had the most votes first will be lynched

Game Specific:

17) Three guaranteed roles are (not same flavor and wording as actual roles will be):
Veto holder
- Once a day, may send in a name to be vetoed. That person's vote will not count for the rest of the day. Can not be used past day 3.
Researcher
- Once a night, may send in a name to use your research on. Due to finding precedent, that person would require one less vote to be lynched. Can not be used past Night 2.
Investigator
- Once a night, may send in a name to investigate. You will get a probable or not probable result (guilty/innocent). Sanity not guaranteed.
These roles will be given out randomly to town and/or anti-town factions.

18) Sample Vanilla Townie Role PM:
You are
name
. After hearing oral arguments, you have already decided to agree/not to agree with the previous court's decision and uphold the exemption to the Fourth Amendment.

You are a
vanilla justice
. You win when all anti-town factions are eliminated and at least one member of the town faction is alive.

Alright! Welcome to the game. This should be pretty interesting. Let's get started with a few questions:

1) How much experience do you have playing Mafia?
2) How would you describe your playstyle?
3) What do you value the most in making decisions in Mafia?
4) Do you expect the Spanish Inquisition?
5) Do you prefer playing as mafia or as town?
6) How many games are you playing in at the moment?
7) What do you consider to be your greatest strength as town? As mafia?

I will answer once answers have been collected from all other players.

I also choose not to randomly vote.

1) Played alot of games on another site and a few here. So I guess a good amount.
2) I'll get back to you on this one
3) Probably the arguements evidence and scumtells dropped
4) Lolwut?
5) Mafia I guess. Probably cuz you get to screw around with the town and 3rd Party
6) 6 or 7
7) As town probably finding scumtells or figuring out if someone is telling the truth( I have my ways.....but I won't tell you what they are). As mafia probably avoiding lynch or causing the town to mislynch

1. little. I have watched one game, died in one large normal, died in one mini normal and am in day one in a large normal (that you are modding :) ) I was scum in both games I died in, if that info is relevant.

2. hmm. I haven't really developed one yet to be honest. I like to observe, over a super aggressive play style. However, once I find someone suspicious, I become aggressive towards them.

3. I think, in analyzing a post: would mafia or town be more likely to do this.

4. D, all of the above.

5. I prefer playing as scum. The fun part is trying to fool the other people, I find it more enjoyable than trying to not be fooled.

6. two here, one on another site.

7. as town, I am able to look at the big picture and figure out a good course of action. as mafia, I am able to figure out a way to not be suspicious. I suck at knowing whom to nightkill though :?

Fun time with quizzes.
1: According to my notes, 18 finished games.
2: Anti-town Lurker Bastard(tm) Although this is my first game since Oct 2009 so who knows.
3: Gut feeling
5: Any role where I have the chance to fake claim, because that's always fun.
6: Just this one.
7a: Lynching townies 7b: Getting lynched.

1) How much experience do you have playing Mafia?
Not much. This is only my fourth game over all.

2) How would you describe your playstyle?

I'll let you decide. I haven't really played enough games yet to develope a style.

3) What do you value the most in making decisions in Mafia?

That's a tough question. I try to take a lot of things into consideration, so there isn't really one thing I value above the rest.

4) Do you expect the Spanish Inquisition?

Eh?

5) Do you prefer playing as mafia or as town?

Mafia. Knowledge is power, and the more you know, the more fun the game is.

6) How many games are you playing in at the moment?

One, including this one.

7) What do you consider to be your greatest strength as town? As mafia?

I don't really know yet. I haven't played enough games to determine my strengths and weaknesses. Right now I can tell you that my main weakness is a lack of overall knowledge and experence in the game of Mafia.

1. I've only played on this site and all my games can be found in my wiki.
2. I like to ask questions and make concise posts. I look for tells in everything.
3. Caution
4. No
5. I guess town. I've only been mafia once though.
6. One in addition to this.
7. I'm usually good at avoiding suspicion, which is helpul for either faction.

1) I've been pretty active ever since I joined. ~12 completed games.
2) Too difficult a question. I try to be active, but sometimes fail, particularly when I'm struggling to work out what's going on. I think that sometimes I manage to scumhunt well. My strongest reads tend to be fairly gut based.
3) Whether a post feels like something I'd do in that position as town - or "gut" for short.
4) Of course not.
5) Other factors influence my enjoyment much more.
6) 5, including this one.
7) As town: I seem to look very townish, at least when I'm active. As scum: in my two successful scumgames, one was just a huge bus, and the other was really won through town lurking. I don't really have an answer to this one yet - though again I don't seem to come under much suspicion as scum.

1) How much experience do you have playing Mafia? - Quite a bit, around 2 years play on another site and 11 games here on MS, not including 3 mod abandoned games.

2) How would you describe your playstyle? - Erratic at times, however helpful

3) What do you value the most in making decisions in Mafia? Catching people out in lies or inconsistoncys in their game play

4) Do you expect the Spanish Inquisition? If I come under pressure for my actions, then yes...I expect every avenue to be explored and hopefully I can answer as best I can to help the town

5) Do you prefer playing as mafia or as town? Depends, I have had some fun games as scum, but some fun games as town also.

6) How many games are you playing in at the moment? this and Brrr Mafia, also modding one that is about to start on another site

7) What do you consider to be your greatest strength as town? As mafia?

As town my greatest strength would be being level headed and stepping away from the game for an hour or so to re-think things rather than make rash jumps onto wagons or make rash accusations

As scum I have hte ability to blend in and not really raise much suuspicion on me. as town I would usually come under pressure on day 1 or 2 and make an unforced claim.

I'm curious to see how close to real life the roles in this game shake out. I couldn't find what the trial court said (only the Michigan CoA), but there seems to be a discrepancy between what happened in the Real World and what's pertinent to this game. Did a little bit of research just to see if we might be able to rely upon some real world facts to help verify claims, but I'm not too sure that we will be able to do so.

What makes you think that admitting to being a new player makes me a pleaser and gives nothing away? The reason why I didn't give good answers to some of the questions was because I haven't played enough games yet to really know the answers, not because I deliberatly wanted to please or withold information.

To be honest, I don't really even know what is going on in the real world in the suprememe court, I am from UK and we don't get much news on that... (as long as I don't watch fox lol)

Why are you waiting for everyone else to answer before you vote? Are you going to vote based off of answers to your questions (as the second line quoted seems to hint)? Why these questions?

If you don't mind me asking: What school/year? Feel free to tell me to stuff it since it doesn't relate to game, I'm just curious.

I usually try to open my games with questions as I find that they lead to a much more productive and deliberate day 1. I usually answer last because, if I don't, several people will basically parrot my answers. I'm a 1L at Mercer - are you in law school/looking at it?

I think so? I've done it in at least 6 games now, so it's kinda hard to keep track.

Can you please explain this in further detail? It's seems like an overly broad claim that could, on its face, apply to just about any set of answers to the questions; which, in and of themselves, do not seem to really promote "giving [something] away" in answering them.

jasonT1981 wrote:To be honest, I don't really even know what is going on in the real world in the suprememe court, I am from UK and we don't get much news on that... (as long as I don't watch fox lol)
Unless if it's a big case that everyone learns about in 8th grade Social Students (
Brown v. Board of Education
, etc.) or a case that is especially important to a lawyer's specific field of law (and even then, it'd have to be an incredibly important and/or recent case), nobody here can recite to you the findings of a SC case off of the top of their head, either. I just did a five minute google look-up to see the history of the case - something anyone from anywhere can do, no intricate knowledge of the US Supreme Court needed.

By the by, you mind find this humorous: Power Rangers Promo. One of the TV stations is playing the original Power Ranger episodes every Saturday morning (and passing them off as "new" by adding some really cheap graphics). And, yes, I
have
been watching them. Brings back memories.

Netopalis wrote:I usually answer last because, if I don't, several people will basically parrot my answers.
What's to stop them for parroting someone else's answers? Regardless of whose answers are being parroted, couldn't you just call the parrot out on his parroting? (
parrot parrot parrot parrot
!)

I'm still curious: Are you going to base your non-random vote off of the answers themselves (as your first post seemed to indicate)? Or am I just extrapolating too much from the juxtaposition of those two phrases?
Netopalis wrote:I'm a 1L at Mercer - are you in law school/looking at it?
Heading off to W&M in August.
