You know, it's the darnedest thing but there's actually such a thing called sportsmanship. I implore you to look into it.

SIR CYANIDE wrote:I did not play scummy. Just obnoxious, and I upped it up a notch to try and get TQO modkilled. My play could barely have been better, taking out a townie pre-night pre-lynch.
This post displeases me most, I would say, closely followed by your comment to Jazz. I don't mind a player pretending to have a horrible personality in order to improve your position. However, as soon as others notice it and request you to tone it down, you're breaking the "don't be a jackass" rule, and should either stop or be stopped.

In this case, I find the game should have been paused at post 527, and both players spoken to. Seeing as that moment was missed, modkilling or replacing both would avoid one team doing it intentionally next time, in order to get an advantage.

It seems equivalent to provoking someone on the opposing team so that they over-react, hit you and get sent off in soccer, for example. (C.f. the 2006 World Cup Final.)

I imagine opinions about whether or not it's ethical in Mafia should be fairly consistent with opinions about whether or not it's ethical in sports.

FWIW, my opinion is no.

If you take a look at some of Cyanide's other games he has issues other than just sexism. I think, in the end, he just has an over-inflated sense of Ego and can't fathom that he's potentially in the wrong.

After reading Cyanide's further posts in this thread, I think I'm just going to pre-emptively blacklist him from my games anyway. Don't bother signing up for one of them ever.

In my opinion, modkills should be used as sparingly as possible, so I don't really understand why the mod in that game decided to modkill one player but replace the other when both parties seemed about equally involved. I think a warning should have been sent first and if it continued, one or both of the players should have replaced.

To me, the question you're really asking is "is it ok to insult someone and provoke someone enough that the game becomes too unenjoyable for them to want to stay in it?" And to that I'd say no. It would violate my "being courteous to all players" rule. As a mod, I'd warn or replace you along with the other person using my own discretion.

Thinking back on it, I agree. I would have had both players replaced, not modkilled.

Modkills should be reserved for when somebody destroys the integrity of the game as a whole, like here.

I'm very agianst all the black listing occuring.

1. He did something.
2. The mod and some players said that it was agianst how mafia was played on MS.
3. He brought it to MD to see if that was the case and discuss it.
4. He gets multiple blacklistings. Wtf?

I think that him bringing it to MD to see the consenus shouldn't be punished at all. So I'll break ranks with everyone and say thanks for caring enough about what your fellow scummers said to actually checking what the general ruling was.

He was probably blacklisted for acting like a dick in this thread (or so it seems), what he did doesn't really bother me at all, and I'm sure it's partly gimmick in this thread, but yeah.

Pretty much this, I think. I think it's fair game in soccer, and probably in mafia too. It's probably just not something you should admit to doing in either game...imo.

It's more his behavoir here and seeing how he acts around the site that lead me to my blacklist
Why would I (a) want to play with someone who likes to push players in such a way (b) is sexist obvious (c) would make most people dislike him and ask me to replace him anyways.

In this thread people reveal whether they play to win or not.

I think alot of people just put way to much emotional stock into these games. Also, Its an easy game to get frustrated and angry with. Also, cyanide is a troll so like, dont feed him.

So, if a mafioso gets personal with me in the thread and then nightkills me, is he an egregious sinner?

Playing to win and playing to have fun are not mutually exclusive events.

I play a lot of board games with my friends, and I'm pretty competitive with them. I play to win.

However, that isn't free reign to be an ass to them. It is fully possible to behave as though the people you are playing with are human beings with feelings and still play to win.

I'm really not sure why this is so hard. Its not a function of "emotional stock" - its a function of having some respect.

However, I'll say that I tend to push scummers a tad (read: Big Brtoher Mafia, [ongoing game]). I also agree that playing to win and playing to have fun can be the same or different, depending on the person.

I won't blacklist, but I'll give a warning. Trying to modkill someone (or even posting Player X is trying to modkill Player Y, when it's obviously false) will result in force-replacement. I'm a pretty easyy-going person.

The real issue (and mind you I haven't blacklisted) is #3.

That's not the case. It reeks of coming in looking for praise and then when he didn't get it saying "well, you guys just don't play to win"

And then the misogyny bit too.

He got multiple blacklistings because that's not how we want people to behave in our games. Games are meant to be enjoyable.
Seriously. Read your role PM before playing.
