Ah. That's much clearer then. I probably should have posted earlier that I was typing my post while you posted yours--delay is the danger of multitasking I suppose.

No, as Casseopia said, I am not claiming cop, just giving an example of how that "game" is played -- it gives the surviving townspeople a major advantage when/if the cop is killed...without easily jeopardizing the identity of the cop (or other special, like our "prophet,", if he had survived).

And no, it does not give a greater advantage to the Mafia...if people are smart, and largely give negative answers (which is what the Cop will do in any case, since statistically, most investigations will be negative) -- since these will mostly be true, they will give a much greater eventual clue to the identity of the Mafia than they will give the Mafia a clue to the identiy of the Cop. (and, I believe, identifying a number of "confirmed innocents" midgame is crucial to the survival of the town, since those innocents can act as a block to expose the mafia, and can't be killed all at once if they are revealed late enough).

Random.

And I am not sure the Mneme idea though interesting is sound. It is the same discussion when a cop comes out to point out a mafia - it is usually considered not a good idea to blurt out those found innocent as well. But maybe we should have this discussion in a differnet forum.

I'm going to pretend that getting the first lynch vote the first time I ever play Mafia doesn't hurt my feelings tremendously. I'm not petty. I can let things slide. Really.

In all seriousness, I like memne's idea, though I don't recommend doing it for more than a few days. If everyone says, "If I were a cop, I would say that X is not mafia" chances are in our favor that we will have a confirmed innocent should the cop die. But if we do it to many rounds then we'll start forcing the cop to either reveal himself through a positive ID or give false information, neither of which we want to do. It's a chance, but if we only do it one or two days, then the odds are in our favor that we benefit should the cop die before we lynch the innocents he investigates. I say we put it to a vote, provided that discussion of such things is appropriate (if otherwise, it's all moot.) If it passes, everyone gives a negative identification and we disregard them totally until a cop is revealed.

Of course, if the cop investigated a real mafia on the first day, we aren't going to get the best outcome of this arrangement, but the chances are against that being true.

I think the topic has already died but here is my argument against posting my/your findings as a cop.

If you post a Mafia member as an innocent they would in turn assume that you are not the cop and postpone your death until they narrow down choices and kill off the cop.

Anyway, thanks for the vote Internet Stranger, but I'll turn the other cheek and
vote Pim
since "I'm not petty. I can let things slide. Really"

Well, that's two votes for my "idea", (actually a staple strategy in some cultures of Are You a Werewolf, aka Mafia), two against; does anyone else have an opinion?

The idea of only doing it for a couple of days has merit, though IMO, given that the game is about killing the mafia, not keeping the cops alive, it's more important to spread true information quickly rather than hide the IDs of the cop(s) as long as possible -- IMEX, there comes a point where it's easily worth it for the cop to reveal even confirmed innocent information rather than risk hiding their info and have it all die with them, especially given that statistically, their odds of getting either killed or lynched goes up dramatically as the days go on.

Not much else to say, except I don't want to vote Pim. It strikes me as wrong to randomly lynch a newbie on the first day.

Of course, I think this is CasinoPete's first game too...

Dragon Phoenix's vote against me seems to have been a vote for the sake of voting, and Trevize's vote was playing off of my post, so I don't see any hidden motive in those. Internet Stalker, though, makes a random vote for Trevize, dismisses an argument without really backing it up at all ( unlike Trevize) then switches his vote for no reason other than starting a bandwagon. That's going to happen sometimes, but nonetheless,
FOS Internet Stranger
because it seems that, at best, he switched his vote to lynch someone quickly.

if you're going to FOS IS, it should be because he hasn't yet complained about how ungodly slow this game is proceding.

speaking of which, this game is going ungodly slowly.

Wait a sec, if the day lasts forever, then the mafia won't get a chance to kill anyone!

Well, that didn't seem to work. I suppose I'll

(Apologies for not playing, NY eve and cricket held me up.)

I realise that most? of the votes against me are for not saying anything, at this stage, so I can't really OMGUS everyone, but I will say that by targetring me, you are hitting the wrong man.

I dunno who to FOS/VOTE yet.

I'll also give my apologies for not posting, I think I was confused that the day would actually start on the 3rd. In any case...

Dragon Phoenix is an experienced player. It seems to me that an experienced player would notice 3? 4? players in their first Mafia game, and attempt to take advantage of their newness. Arguing against mneme's idea with the point that it is "not a sound game tactic" takes advantage of our relative inexperience with what good tactics might actually be, and subtlely hints that he is on our side. Oh, and changing his vote when it got bandwagoned, what a good citizen you are DP!

vote: Dragon Phoenix

Let's lynch the bastard.
