Why'd you sign up to this game then?

I dunno, it just seems pointless unless you just wanted to play a vanilla nightless game.

Scot: if Adel isn't scum, then she's intentionally turning herself into the most useless town a game like this could produce; the only thing worse would be to not privately communicate at all, or to put on the facade on privately communicating while remaining useless *cough* JDodge *cough*

People who refuse to use IMing, would a non-instantaneous method of communication that doesn't clog up my inbox and is easy to analyze back and forth (such as QuickTopic or email) be an option for you?

JDodge: After thinking about what has been mentioned about you not wanting to know your role PM, I realized one pretty important point (I believe NabakovNabakov already mentioned this also): Whether or not the mod went ahead and told you your role, you were bound to find out eventually considering the fact that this set-up is Daytalk. If you had a scum role, I would guess that one of your scum partners would have attempted to communicate with you eventually through pm or messenger. Therefore I too am forced to question whether or not your reaction to Oman telling you your role was really necessary, even though you have mentioned that it was due to him removing your right to play the game the way you wished to.

xyzzy: Was what you mentioned here:
xyzzy wrote:JDodge, the whole point of private communication is that you can see things people don't normally show - if I'm asking you questions in a chat and you're taking 5 minutes to answer, I won't trust your answer.
a hypothetical situation or did this actually occur? Also could you please answer my question from Post 54?

nieroe@gmail.com is an email account I'll check for this game.

In the open setup thread where I'm active and this mechanic was discussed, IM was not presented as a critical element. I don't IM -- it is a form of communication I've always been really frustrated with.

Also, I recruited a couple of good, intelligent, active players, including NabNab whom I'm something like 0-5 against in games where we have different win conditions. I'm into this game, and its players, and I don't see why IM is so important to xyzzy.

It was a hypothetical.

If everyone talks to everyone, discrepencies in what people say will come up only among certain people, yes, and those may confuse - but every towniw will be talking to eight other townies who will be completely honest about their suspicions - there will be agreement, and those who don't agree will often be scum; basically, mass-daytalking will result in the same people being suspicious to many people, who are almost probably scum.

Adel, it's important because it's an instantaneous method, meaning that I can watch not only your response, but also when you start typing it, and how long it takes you to write it. All that adds up to a lot of information non-IM methods fail to provide.

I am doubtful that scum will contradict themselves in PMs/IMs any more than townies will. If someone contradicts themselves in a PM (not IM) then I'd say they're actually more likely to be townie.

I may be wrong, but I assume you've never played chat mafia before. It is an different game, and the lack of forethought makes it really easy to read the alignments of people who've never played it before. So it's irritating that people don't have aim because it makes it much harder for me to read them for no reason other than they dislike the medium. PMing is mostly pretty useless in a vanilla game like this because there really isn't any reason to PM other people, as there is no information that is better pm'd than posted publicly in the thread. In games that have roles, you could give role info to people you trust who are attacking you to get them to lay off, stuff like that. But this is a vanilla game and all we have are opinions, and what's the point of sharing an opinion with only one person over the other eleven people?

Sarcastic?

The last post-elipsis phrase makes me think not.
Adel wrote:also, I communicate exclusively by PM. I don't IM.
Then you might want to consider taking the defunct AIM address out of your profile.

I think that if there's somebody who isn't going to IM because they don't have an address (seriously unlikely but possible, and I think that was what was at issue in the first wave of this discussion), it doesn't impact their possible allignment one bit. It's not like that's a choice they made in order to help their play in Daytalk 12. However, I can't help but be suspicious of Adel who clearly has the capacity to IM, but chooses not to. Is IMing really that bad?

Personally, I think our resident Scumchatters (JDodge, SirT, Xyzzy) are just getting a case of cabin fever. Hell, we have players (Phate) who haven't even posted. Honestly, I think the biggest observation we can take out of it is how the Xyzzy wagon has grown
outside
of the base three.

I dont use AIM and really cant. I play this game a lot at work during the day. People can try to find me on my MSN. I'm there in the night much more than the day.

I joined because Adel said "hey. there's this cool game with good players in it. come play!" I'm happy to replace out for someone with AIM if people want. Otherwise I just think of this as some sort of ironman/deckstackedagainstthetown mafia and will roll up my sleeves and do my best.

PS. I thought AOL was dead. Finding a world that runs on it is...weird to me.

I feel the same way. I never used aim before I joined MS, and it was slightly weird to see so many people using when previously everyone I knew used MSN. And I think if someones asking you to download aim, you're perfectly within your rights to ask them to download msn.

I am available on whichever IM you may wish to use (AIM, MSN, Yahoo) All of them are in my profile.

If someone wants Google Talk, my id is cdhopate@gmail.com. I take emails on that id too (and no other id).

BTW, primate, before joining MS, I used only MSN/YIM too. Never AIM.

No, we used PMs, I agree... But I don't think that is what primate/xyzzy are trying to say... See, communicating with IMs allows less time to respond. This way, thd scum (as well as the town) are bound to act without thinking things thoroughly. However, this hurts scum more as they do not have town's best interests at heart at a subconscious level, which gets exposed more in instanteneous play. That is what I believe Xyzzy and Prim are arguing.

But can we get along with the game now? What do you all think of Xyzzy wagon?

With regard to the IM client vs. private message thing, I personally don't think the outcome of this game will be determined by either one; I think this game purely boils down to vote analysis and progression of time (as people's alignments are revealed) especially since there aren't any power roles. Maybe later on in the game the PM and IM thing that xyzzy and others mention may play a greater factor but right now, I don't think it does.

With regard to Sir Tornado's question, I have a few questions of my own.

Sir T
: Do you think there is a solid case against xyzzy? He's not in any immediate trouble at the moment as he's only at L-3, but you also are one of the people on the bandwagon.

kabenon007
: Why did you specifically choose to join the xyzzy wagon as opposed to the JDodge one? You mentioned that you will refrain from joining JDodge's wagon but you still joined a wagon nevertheless. And since my random vote clearly isn't doing anything on Phate who has yet to say anything, I would like to
unvote
and
Vote: kabenon007.

Haha, incognito, you asked me exactly what I wanted to hear. I chose the xyzzy wagon because I was thinking of the last game he and I played, in which an unfortunate occurence occurred with us as scum. Basically, he accidentally slipped out that he wasn't town. Just wanted to see if anything has changed with him.

this setup would be much more interesting if there were townie powerroles.

vote: Mod randomly makes one townie a Cop and one scum a Godfather

I don't think it would shift the balance too much, and it would make the game far more interesting.

this is
our
game, and we should be able to do what we want to with it, even change the setup, especially if we can get 100% of the players to go along with it.

Agreed?
