The end of day three votecount!

Moves

Nf3 (5) - Gorrad, Lawrencelot, Pesco47, sirdanilot, SensFan
g4 (1) - Indigo Herron
Not voting (3) - Doomsday, Goatrevolt, The Central Scrutinizer

Just as a note, vote for players or moves won't count after the move majority has been reached. Also, if you vote for a move with 'vote' instead of 'move' it also won't be counted.

Players

Not voting (9) - SensFan, Indigo Heron, Doomsday, Gorrad, Goatrevolt, Lawrencelot, sirdanilot, Pesco47, The Central Scrutinizer

move: exf5

I think it's the obvious choice. The only other option is moving the White Bishop, I think.

I concur. 4. ...f5 doesn't seem like a particularly good move.

Move exf5

Explain the vote? Something to do with one of the moves he suggested?

Why vote doomsday?

Also, exf5 gives us a double pawn, but I don't really see a better move anyway.

Hmmm...does Qe2 have any merit? We can force either a trade of Queens, or pin the Black Bishop. If not, I like Bb5.

To me, Qe2 does not have any merit. White is blocking the white square bishop from becoming a factor in the game early on. Besides, after the Black Bishop pin, Black can then play to avoid moving the Queen out of the way. Besides, Qe2 cramps our end of the board, while Black is developing nicely.

Black would be nuts to play Qe7 in response to our Qe2, as they did not take advantage of the fact that our side is cramped.

Remember, we are assuming that Black will make the best move.

At this point, I'm all for a move by White's mobile bishop to d3 or c4, hence Bd3 or Bc4. I still need to think things through.

If 6. Qe2 Be7, then 7. Qe3 pins the bishop.

Consider, though, that we would be pinned as well should black decide to move their queen (which is what I'd do).

And you'd want a queen trade this early on?

Very much so. I play just fine without my Queen, while I find that most people crumble to pieces if they lose her, especially "this early on".

My granduncle was in the trenches. All they did down there was play chess. The one thing he passed down to my father about the game was 'You cannot vin vithout your Qveen'. So thanks, but I'd rather have not.

I suppose you don't read many master games, then? And by your own point, Black can't win, either, if we trade.

Aye, and I don't know HOW this game works if we stalemate.

I don't read master games. I date.

I'm curious, though, do you honestly believe that tradding Queens makes it that much harder for either side to win? If so, why would you offer a trade of Queens if you were Black and White played Qe2?

Because in that situation, especially given that in this hypothetical I know a trade is assured due to daytalk, it would be better if I initiated the trade. The person who initiates gets the move directly after, putting him potentially on the offensive.

Not really. After 6. Qe2 Qe7 7. Qxe7, Black's only move is Bxe7. Hardly "offensive"...
