I'm wary of that black knight's next move. I think it's to capture the Joker.

I changed my mind, I think we should not let our queen get out, to prevent the black knight from performing a double attack on tower and king. Now Nf3 looks good to me. But can someone explain to me how f4 or g3 is useful?

I'm feeling drawn to playing f4, but I can't explain to myself why yet. g3 will need some explaining from the person that suggested it.

Nf3 is good standard play. Rather boring, but may be our best move.

I really like f4 a lot. I feel it's aggressive and actively fights for control. I'm not a fan of g3, which seems to just cede tempo and set ourselves up for the long haul.

Nf3 can come after f4. The alternate cannot happen, at least until that knight moves again.

Just to be clear, Nf3 and f4 are both fairly serviceable moves. I prefer f4 of the two, as it is more aggressive... but I thought that there was a fairly compelling argument for a careful, defensive game and g3 sets that up.

g3 sets up the fianchetto for more control of the center and typically leads to a much more closed formation.

If we want to attack, I like f4... although I know that there are supposedly some strong counters to that line, and mafia may be trending us that way because they are familiar with them. For one, I am not terribly familiar with them. Just know that if 3. f4 ... we might have to 4. g3 anyway depending on how black plays it.

Considering the board doesn't change through the day, I really don't want to clutter the thread with boards unless everyone wants me to. A much better option, imo, is to turn on the 'show first post' option in your profile so that you can see all the information (including chess board) I've put in the first post whenever you open the game.

I'll try and step up the vote counts though, sorry about that.

I didn't either, but I think CS wants to do it because it will protect a pawn on f4. But then why wouldn't we perform f4 first...

I'm willing to change to f4, it's like Goatrevolt says: if we want to do both f4 and Nf3, f4 should come first.
