It wasn't common to my knowledge. It might even be something we dreamed up on our own because I don't remember anything quite like it before.
The role designs mostly, but not entirely, revolve around the dream mechanics. Many of the abilities and effects of the dreams have 2013-2014 written all over them, and I'd say the balance considerations are meant to reflect that era. There were many notable theme games in that era where the flavor inspiration had huge effects on the designs and mechanics. The Tales series that Cabd and Syryana designed. AMOL and FE: Awakening, designed by Ceph, stand out to me in that respect.
AMOL had a dreamwalkers mechanic. FE:A had players pair up, get neighborhoods, and have children who joined the game on day 2. In Tales of You, some of the abilities only worked on certain character types.

All dead players have been added to this spectate/spoiler free dead thread. All possible mechanics that allow speaking with the dead are now out of play.
