Rules

1. Social Contract

*This is a game. I've done my best while setting it up to make it enjoyable for everyone. Fun is our first priority.

*I will do the following:
=treat this game as my MafiaScum priority, as a committment to the players
=post votecounts at least once per page whenever possible

2. Activity

*This game will have fixed deadlines (extensible only in extreme circumstances) and I expect players to actively participate.

*Deadlines are 3 weeks long for Days 1 and 2. Days 3 and later will be 2 weeks long. Nights will be ~72 hours long. All deadlines will expire at midnight East Coast US time.

*Players not posting for 72 hours will be prodded and must respond in the game thread within 48 hours. I will prod for inactivity twice. On the third instance of 72 hours without posts, or on failing to respond to a prod, you will be replaced.

*If you see a player has not posted in thread for 72 hours and I have not announced a prod, please PM me. All prods are stated publicly.

*If you will be away and unable to post over 48 hours, please let me know. You may be replaced if I believe your absence will disrupt the game.

3. Votes and Lynches

*Lynches will only occur with a true majority of voters. Once a person has reached a majority, they are dead and unvoting them will not stop the lynch.

*If the deadline hits before anyone has been lynched, then no one will be lynched.

*Votes and unvotes must be bolded

in the following format (##vote: Sample, ##unvote: Sample). The ## makes it easy for me to find un/votes quickly.

*Players may vote for no lynch to occur on any given day (##vote: No Lynch). A majority of votes for no lynch will end the day and no one will be lynched.

The Neighborhood has been a wonderful place to live. Folks return tools they borrow. Kids frolic at playgrounds and the old quarry. Main Street is home to vibrant shops and hospitable shop owners. Mr. Smith's tenure as mayor (the last 28 years) has been idyllic.

Mr. Smith knows everyone by name, the ages of their kids, how folks lawn or home improvements are coming. He walks his dog down his block, up Main Street, around the elementary school, across the baseball field and through the little patch of woods behind his lot.

Mr. Smith was found beaten to death halfway between third base and home plate on the baseball diamond. Mr. Smith didn't make it home.

Find the scum, kill them, save The Neighborhood.

Alternatively: avoid the gallows, kill the townies, claim The Neighborhood.

My apologies to anyone confused by Pooky's posts (now deleted). He had expressed interest in replacing into the game if it was needed, and we had a miscue leading him to believe he had a spot.

I do not believe his posts were game affecting (there were 3 plus an apology for the miscue in a span of 5 minutes) so I simply made their font size smaller with a note to ignore them, but a player has asked me to delete them because they were distracting, so I've done so.

Mr. Smith's death was the talk of the town. Folks gathered at the town square at dawn and were pointing fingers at each other and making accusations of involvement almost immediately. Folks attention turned to Lowell- he kept coming and going, missing important parts of the discussion and having to catch up. By dusk, most folks had had enough and wanted him hung for the murder of Mr. Smith.

So he was.

As the crowd dispersed, they noticed an awful lot of people standing at the bus stop, looking at their watches, making frantic calls on their cell phones, comforting crying, exhausted looking children. Looking back at Lowell's lukewarm corpse hanging from the town's oldest maple tree, someone noticed the public transit bus parked on the other side of the town square.

Checking his pockets, a "The Neighborhood Transit Authority" badge and keyring were found.

He'd been coming and going on his routes around town.

The following morning, just before sunrise, Mrs Smith, recently widowed, wept alone in her living room. She heard the faint sounds of a piano...Rachmaninov's Vocalise. She looked out the window and across the street. Through the rising sun's glare, she saw into iamausername's living room...he was sitting at the piano, swaying.

Mrs Smith saw a flicker of movement...blood sprayed from user's skull and across the window as Mrs Smith watched in horror!

user reached weakly up from the floor, trying to blink away the blood running through his eyes. His hand gripped the piano keys and the attacker slammed the piano's lid down on his hand, crushing user's fingers, before finishing user off with the bat.

The Neighborhood was chilly this morning, with a despondent fog hanging over the town square, where everyone was gathering.

News of user's brutal murder weighed heavily on folks. Accusations began to fly. Discussions were heated until just past lunch, when those gathered noticed a few people missing. The missing showed up a few hours later.

"Got food on my shirt," said M4yhem.

"Left the stove on," said the pickemgenius.

Approaching dusk more fingers were pointed, more accusations flying, more anger built up as a consensus on Mr Smith's and user's murderers was reached...

An archaic rule of byzantine bureaucracy was uncovered and rushed out to the town square as the sun set. It specifically prohibited lynching people after dark.

**No one has been lynched. Night 2's deadline is 10/8, midnight, east coast time.**

Mrs Smith was awakened just after midnight by a hissing noise. Expecting someone to be coming to kill her, she stayed in bed, waiting to die.

The noise got louder, but no one came. She forced herself out of the bed followed the noise to the bathroom. She flipped on the light and saw water misting from a pipe at the back of the toilet.

She dropped a towel on the puddle of water forming, shuffled to the kitchen, grabbed the phone and called the Tommy's Plumbing emergency number on her fridge.

No answer. Then she heard sirens wailing past the house.

Tommy's on-call person for the night, pickemgenius, had been found brutally beaten to death just minutes earlier.

Everyone gathered at the town square the next morning. Except pickemgenius. And Darox.

Darox was found dead in his living room. His face had been smashed by a glass vase. The damage done would require a closed casket.

Folks milled about the town square throughout the day. They came. They went. Death was part of life, after all, wasn't it?

There was talk of The Neighborhood's Council postponing daylight savings time for a day and how that might help find the killers.

Dusk fell, and in spite of the laws against lynching after dark, some folks tried to make one happen.

Mrs Smith slept fitfully again. She'd resigned herself to a life alone, always waiting for death but knowing it would never come.

The sirens in the morning didn't even wake her.

Police and paramedics were responding to the scene of a brutal attack on TonyMontana. He's the ice cream man for goodness sake!

They hadn't even tried to move him to the stretcher and he was covered in bandages and filled with painkillers. He was barely holding on and he'd been mumbling the whole time they were working on him.

Tony coughed blood, wheezed and a bit of clarity appeared in his eyes. He stared upside down at the medic trying to keep any more of his brains from leaking out of his skull and blood rattled in his throat:

Many accusations and pointed fingers later, Dead Rikimaru was, well...dead. Once hung, people looked around nervously expecting either a hail of gunfire or a battery of baseball bats.

After a few late deliveries, you change and roll out to crywolf's place.

She obviously got back just before you did- her car engine is still tic-tic-ticcing in the driveway. But its still early- surely you didn't miss anything, right?

You see a trash can set out for the next morning and take a peek inside. Too many Law and Order re-runs...what the hell do you think you'll find? Bloody gloves and a baseball bat receipt?

The last light in the house on the second floor goes out and a few minutes later you realize she's not going anywhere. Damn.

After a brief planning session with your partner, its decided you'll whack Tony. He's not at home.

His Mr Softee truck is parked in his driveway and the house is dark. You pace in the shadows a bit, anxiously hefting your Mafia Bat of Beatdown for a bit before rolling out to find him.

You find him at crywolf's place, peeking in the windows, looking in her trash can. A light on her second floor goes out and you hear him curse softly in the night and start walking down the street.

A few doors down from his house you make your move and slam the bat against the back of his skull. Bood flies, he drops like a bag of rocks and few more licks assure you the job is done.

Gorkat, I intend to nominate you for most enjoyable game (even though I'm in the running for it and you're sure to beat me) because this game was a nail-biter from page 1 until the final vote. The GF + miller with no cop was brilliant and the balance seemed just about perfect. Best game I've played so far!

I'm really sorry the flavor dipped off so much at the end. I'm glad you think the balance was right. Oman was particularly hot about his role- we had an exchange in private where he was asking about investigation immunity and I wouldn't confirm or deny it, so he felt like a gimped goon, epsecially since I hinted that he could be tracked making his message delivery (I explained the action targeted the recipient), but it gave him options for a fake-claim (such as one-shot cop or something, and then he could hole up afterwards).

The Neighbor recruitment also targeted, so that could have created a sticky mess.

What Oman/DR didn't know, and I didn't get a chance to mod-note above, is that if wolf and Ythill died first, he'd get to keep on killing. The town would have been clued in by a drastic change in kill methods (like bombs or fires or something).

destructor reviewed the setup, as well as MeMe giving it a once over to confirm the "Normal"ness of it (the first draft had nothing about the Witness Protection stuff, and I had to add it to give it Mafia "seasoning").

The setup was heavily inspired by destructor's Nubigena game: 2 goons, 1 mafia doc (unknown Night one) vs a gunsmith, a vig and some townies. In that game, the scum had to hope to avoid the doc night one and luckily killed the non-azwolging vig. I felt a tracker would have been more meaningful than the gunsmith with a mafia doc and vig, so I started with some ideas there.

I then really like thed idea of the Neighbor role, and also liked the idea of a mafia member who couldn't be part of a two-way conversation, and they both gave some neat things for a tracker to see. The 1x vig seemed reasonable.

Had Ythill not been the Neighbor target, I think things could have been very different. It basically dictated the Night 2 kill else Ythill be outed on some kind of slipperyness. I admit a little attempt at some bastardness by opening the thread Night 3 and closing it Day 4. I really wanted Ythill to think someone else could have been a silent partner of some sort But it failed

Oh, yeah! And the role names designed to confuse, if I could. I went back and forth over not including the "Vanilla Townie" part (Bus Driver, Retired Cop) and I really considered making the Retired Cop a full blown deputy, but decided the way I went was less outright mean.

I was hoping that name claims might leave people thinking the Crossing Guard was some kind of Roleblocker.

I guess I'm a bit of a bastard mod at heart...watch out for my next game

Oh, a thought about claimed docs:

In the Nubigena game I mentioned, I was the Mafia Doc. I claimed bad decisions in letting the claimed gunsmith die (see game for details) which partly helped us scum win.

After seeing wolf get by here, as soon as a doc claims to have made a mistake in any game I'm in, they'll almost certainly be voted by myself.

Bad docs = good lynches, I think,
