~ no hard to read / extremely small text. cryptography is forbidden. breadcrumbing is okay.

~ the only allowed media is embedded content, or links to uneditable content. for example, you are not allowed to link vocaroos and pastebins in the thread.

game flavour warning:

this game's flavour will feature images georgebailey and i made on the Artbreeder website. it's a generative adversarial network that is able to combine many images of multiple different things into one.

no NSFW imagery will be shown.

however, images generated in such way often include distorted rooms, environments, animals, and/or humans.

a lot of those are uncanny and can make people feel some discomfort. because of that, all flavour in this game (other than images in posts #0 of game threads) will be hidden under spoilers.

callforjudgement sighed. they weren't getting paid enough for this. "datisi, four mafia members is way too many for a micro game, a combined jester unjester isn't even a normal role, and to top it all off, you want to include a..." they glanced back at the paper datisi had given them. "a town one-shot bulletproof vengeful?"

datisi crossed his arms in defeat. he didn't know what to do. he'd already used all his pocket money for bribing the passing of his recent town-gunsmith-and-three-mafia-doctors mini normal, and arguing against callforjudgement was impossible.

he looked over at isis, who was sitting in the corner playing games on her phone. it was easy to see she wouldn't help him out in the argument, as he could tell by her expression that she was thanking the gods she wasn't the primary reviewer.

however, datisi was determined to figure out a way to get this game running. he thought of all the time and effort he'd put in consistently pestering georgebailey into creating artbreeder images for him to use as flavour. he knew it would be a shame for all that effort to go to waste because of minor details such as "game balance" and "the normal rules and guidelines".

suddenly, an idea popped into his mind.

"what if i run this game as a theme?"

callforjudgement looked at him, their eyes giving away just the slightest hint of fear and worry.

"if i were to run this game as a theme... i wouldn't have to abide by the spirit of normal games, correct?"

"...that is correct, yes." callforjudgement was not able to lie. "if you were to run this game as a theme, you would not have to follow the spirit of the normal ruleset. if you decide to do that instead, i can help you out. but i really don't think--"

"awesome," datisi interrupted them, "then i'm cutting off the reviewing of this as a normal and getting it reviewed as a theme instead. thank you for agreeing to still be my reviewer." the smile that accompanied that sentence made callforjudgement slightly uncomfortable.

suddenly in a much better mood, datisi turned to where isis was sitting. "hey isis, can i still count on you to be my theme game rev--"

he did not get to finish that sentence, as isis had already bolted out the door.

while it certainly wasn't a surprise to see isis not be a fan of his mafia ideas, datisi was impressed by the sheer speed with which she managed to get off the couch and run outside.

looking at the now open door, he tried to think. he knew he didn't *have* to have a second reviewer for a theme game, but he figured it would be a good idea to get another one regardless; if the setup turned out to be an utter dumpster fire, he'd have multiple people to shift the blame onto.

datisi weighed his options. he didn't want to advertise that he's looking for an extra reviewer, as he knew it might be a while until someone responded, and he was getting somewhat impatient. he couldn't recall anyone owing him a favour. and sure, he could ask georgebailey, but he figured george would just end up making weak excuses as to why he can't help review, such as "i've never reviewed a game in my life" and "please let me go home, i've got a family to feed".

after a few seconds of mulling things over, he remembered seeing that lilith, the new micro listmod, was offering to review setups to be run in her queue. knowing he might as well try, he took out his phone and called her. and sure enough, after a relatively short phone call, with only minor persuasion needed, she agreed to help him out.

once datisi let implosion know that the game was instead going to be run as a theme, he told callforjudgement that they should go meet up with lilith. as they were leaving the normal review group HQ, datisi could've sworn he heard the normal listmod breathe a sigh of relief. he wondered what could've possibly caused it.

the two of them were walking in silence. no longer weighed down by the required balance and player base expectations of normal games, datisi was thinking about all the new setup possibilities, occasionally writing some of his ideas down. judging by his facial expressions as he was doing so, callforjudgement decided it was better not to ask.

after a few minutes, datisi seemed really satisfied with one of the pieces of paper he'd written something down on, and he put it into one of his pockets. he then pulled a folder out of his backpack and started flicking through it. the folder seemed to be full of some weird pictures.

all of a sudden, he stopped walking. visibly annoyed, he was staring at the last picture.

taking a deep breath, datisi put the folder back into the backpack, took the piece of paper back out of his pocket, and handed it to callforjudgement. "this is the setup i want to run. now that the normalcy of it is no longer a concern, i'm sure you and lilith won't need me, as you will find it to be perfectly fair and balanced." he turned around and started walking off.

fresh water. mostly unspoiled food. electricity and a laptop. even a toilet. datisi couldn't understand what georgebailey had been complaining about. his basement had everything that a human needed.

"oh geoooorge...?"

unlocking the door and walking down the stairs, datisi called out for george. george got up from the laptop and turned around to look at him. datisi was smiling, but it was easy to tell that there was no genuine joy present on his face.

"hey george, we have a problem. you see, the new game that i'm modding is about to get a pass and be put into signups. and, as the responsible moderator that i am, i decided to check if i have enough flavour ready for it."

ah, so it was about the game flavour. well, ever since george got yelled at for his game design suggestions, such as "9p setup, all jesters" or "add 3 backup millers", datisi wasn't coming to him because of mech.

"it turns out, i do not! i've gone through what you've sent me, and i was only able to collect about 35 images of flavour to use! that is not enough, george! unlike *some* moderators, i do not have vc's only once every three days! i don't leave work for my backups!"

thinking back to the last time george was forced into free labour, he would beg to differ. not only did he have to make one full vote count, he even had to do a nightstart.

"i have consistent vc's! if i end up with a player list full of talkative players, that won't last me one game day! what, am i expected to actually make the flavour for my own game myself!?"

after waiting for a bit to make sure that datisi was done with ranting, george walked over to him and handed him a bunch of pictures.

"i've been working on those for a while." as george was talking, datisi started looking through them. "i joined the official artbreeder discord in order to learn how to create better images. they've gone through the code of the program and figured out how to adjust the inputs for it to create literally anything. it took me a bit to figure it out, but..."

datisi saw depictions of photorealistic faces, of breathtaking landscapes, of magnificent works of architecture and design.

"so... do you like them? will you... will you finally let me go home to--"

he didn't get to finish his question, as datisi took the images and, in one motion, ripped them all in half.

"george, i think you've misunderstood." the horror on george's face upon seeing his creations destroyed didn't faze datisi in the slightest. "the flavour of this game is supposed to be unsettling. it's supposed to make you regret typing that "/in". y'know, like the setup probably will."

datisi started climbing back up the stairs up to the door, leaving the ripped pieces on the floor behind him.

"the game will probably be going live soon. try to have actual flavour ready for me by then."

the next morning - or rather, the next afternoon - datisi woke up to a text message from lilith, telling him that his game has passed review and is going to be put into singups, under one condition. callforjudgement insisted that datisi let the good people of the micro queue know in advance that the setup is a godless clusterfuck that should not be seeing the light of day.

a bit redundant, datisi thought, the signups already say "designed by datisi", but sure.

datisi headed over to the micro queue, gave the disclaimer, and let lilith know about the pre-in he had that he definitely didn't bribe nor bully anyone for. afterwards, he went back home to quickly let george know that the game was in signups, and that it wouldn't be good if he had to start the game without adequate flavour ready.

as he was leaving the basement and locking the door, he could hear a scream from the inside of it, followed by sounds of plates shattering. george was having a manic breakdown again, and after only not seeing the sun for about a week. last time it took two weeks to get to that point. datisi made a mental note to only use paper plates from now on.

the day afterwards, datisi got another message from lilith, this time telling him that the game has filled. somewhat sooner than expected, but hey, he *was* popular.

throwing a cursory glance at the player list, he saw a couple of names he'd modded for before. remembering some of their comments after his previous games, and considering that they were signing up on their own free will, he couldn't help but wonder if they had masochistic tendencies.

in a good mood, datisi headed down to the basement. to his surprise, the flavour was ready, and the images george's created this time were sufficiently unsettling. thanking george and putting them into his backpack, datisi let him know that the game was full, and that he should go get ready.

george didn't seem to be thrilled about the game filling and him having to do backup work once again. he was whining about "just having pulled an all-nighter creating flavour" and "not having seen his family in over two weeks". datisi told him to suck it up; it would be bad moderation practice if the players heard him talking like that.

it took the two of them about 45 minutes to get onto the square where the game was to take place. datisi thought how it probably would've taken no longer than half an hour if george hadn't been dawdling the whole way. and he even bought george a coffee to help him wake up a little.

the 9 players were already there, waiting for them. datisi smiled and waved at the small crowd, then elbowed george to make him do the same. making his way into the middle, datisi opened his backpack, took his megaphone out, turned it on, and said,

"welcome to Micro 1013: Images Made on Artbreeder!"
