Mini 692: Boost Mafia (Game Over!)

Post Post #0 (isolation #0) » Mon Oct 20, 2008 8:44 am

Post by Patrick »

Welcome to Boost Mafia, which is located in a small village, in the middle of nowhere, in an unknown time period. What you do know, is that your close knit community believes in, and indeed fears, the supernatural. People hang up those whatsits on their doors that ward off evil spirits, and regularly pray to whatever deities they believe in, in the hope that no harm will come to them. Up until very recently, this seemed to work. Up until recently. People in the village, good people, have been dying, and it's not due to old age. It seems that even in this remote part of the universe, any village, town or city with a population of greater than four has to deal with invasions from anti-town forces. It looks like the only solution is to try and weed out the scum and lynch them in the town square before they can kill all of you. However, there may be something else that could help. Each day, through a combination of strange herbs, placebo effect, and possibly some other force, you can choose to make two of your number stronger and more intelligent. The precise effects are untested and mostly unknown, and great care should be taken not to aid your enemies, but properly used, this could provide your village with the edge it needs to ensure peace again.

Spoiler follows...

Alive
(2/12)

3) Raging Rabbit - Villager - Survived
8) eldarad - Villager - Survived

Dead

10) Guardian (replacing springlullaby) - Doctor - killed night 1

Standard Rules

1.) This game is a day start. Day 1 will start when everyone has confirmed by PM.
2.) During the day you can vote for a player that you think should be lynched. Votes must be in the form
Vote: Player
otherwise they won't be counted. It would be helpful if players unvote when switching their votes.
3.) When a player reaches a majority of votes, they are lynched. I will reveal their role, and the game will move into night. Players can still talk during twilight.
4.) If the day is lagging or discussion is dragging, the mod will set a deadline. No majority at deadline means no lynch.
5.) No talking to other players, dead or alive, outside of the thread, unless your role permits it.
6.) Once dead, you stop posting. A bah post is fine though.
7.) If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.
8.) Try to post at least once every 48 hours. Treat the game as a committment. If you go inactive, you will be replaced.
9.) I'll try to post votecounts as often as possible. Feel free to ask for a votecount at any time. Disappointingly, I may make mistakes. Point them out very gently.
10.) Avoid excessive profanity, flaming etc.
11.) Don't quote or fakequote your role PM. Don't quote any PMs from the mod. Any of these are potentially modkillable offences.
12.) Have fun!

Special Notes

Firstly, as some of you may have read in the signups thread, Elmo will be helping me mod this game. Elmo doesn't know the setup and roles, and will be modding the game by day, to see if this helps eliminate any mod-bias. I will be dealing with nightactions and writing scenes. Bear that in mind when deciding who to address queries too.

Each day, before you decide on a lynch, you have to decide on two people who you wish to "boost". This can be voted for by posting
Boost: Person
, and works in the same way as normal voting, except that you may vote twice (since two people are being boosted). You can't vote for yourself to be boosted; we like modesty in this village/town. You may not vote twice to boost the same person. A player cannot be lynched until two players have been boosted that day; if someone reaches a lynch majority, nothing happens, and they can be unvoted as normal. Note that if no boost candidates have been selected when a deadline hits, two players will be randomly boosted (and anyone with a lynch majority would be lynched at deadline).

Don't try to determine alignments according to which names, if any, appear in lynch scenes; that's just flavour. Don't try to determine alignments based on wording of role PMs; it's useless in this game and I don't like it as a tactic. Below is a sample role PM. At least one of these exists in the game:
Sample Role PM wrote:You are an inhabitant of the town.

You win when all anti-town roles are eliminated.

All roles are out; please confirm by PM. Game starts in day when everyone's confirmed; in the meantime, feel free to ask if you're unsure about anything. Any roles that can nightalk can do so during the confirmation stage.

Everyone has confirmed, so day 1 is under way. With 12 players alive, 7 is the lynching (and boosting) number. I'll hand you guys over to Elmo :)

Heads up. Elmo may have computer issues that will keep him away for a while (see his sig). In the meantime, I'm going to be looking for a replacement for Mana_Ku.

Final Votecount

Huntress (3) <- sthar8, Green Crayons, Jahudo
Jahudo (7) <- Incognito, iLord, Guardian, TDC, Raging Rabbit, icemanE, eldarad
eldarad <- Huntress

Not voting: Electra
-----------------------------

And so you've all finally made your decisions. First up are Electra and sthar, people who you guys consider worthy of trust. How does this ritual work? Ehhh, that would be telling. Suffice it to say that Electra and sthar have been boosted, and both feel extremely good right now.

Then we come to the slightly less fortunate Jahudo, who's been selected for a very special prize; he gets to wear the first rope necklace! Seven of you overpower him in the fading light of dusk, and march him to the gallows which you've erected in the middle of the town square, and which sorely need testing. He dies agonisingly slowly, and you hope against hope that he wasn't an innocent man of the town - how would you sleep tonight? You needn't have worried, as even a brief search of Jahudo's possessions reveals that he was a very nasty piece of work.

Jahudo - Mafia Godfather - lynched day 1

It is now night 1. You have 72 hours to send in nightchoices, and remember to send them all to me, not Elmo.

It's past midnight. An absolutely absurd hour to be outside in the woods, but iLord always did like his night walks, and isn't about to break the habit of a lifetime just because a few unsavoury characters have taken up residence here. Besides, it helps him think. Helped him, anyway. iLord took his usual meandering path around the lake, pondering the events of earlier today. Why did Jahudo come here, and does he have allies? What's happening tonight? That last question is the only one iLord got an answer too, as he took his last ever walk. Someone knew his usual habit and his usual route, which made it easy to follow him here. A quick and lethal knife to the throat, and iLord sank to the floor gurgling, unable to even cry out, unable to even see who'd killed him.

On the other side of town, Guardian was also preparing to take a wonder. He checked his backpack one more time; a hot flask of coffee, a flashlight, a few medicinal herbs and even a pair of binoculars. He moved towards his front door and had that strange feeling, like when your sixth sense tingles, but dismissed it as the usual paranoia that's really quite understable in these troubled times. Guardian undid the latch and opened the door - and was surprised to see someone he recognised directly in front of him - at least in the split second it took for that person to put a bullet through his forehead.

The nine of you who survived find your two dead friends the following morning, unfortunately neither particularly easy to recognise. iLord was searched and found to have nothing particularly interesting; on the other hand that sprig of herb in Guardian's backpack suggests he was a medical practitioner of sorts.

iLord - Villager - killed night 1
Guardian - Doctor - killed night 1

It is now day 2. With 9 alive, you lynch at 5.

And so it shall be. The two boostings are done as quickly as possible, as the town rushes in eagerness to get to the second bit. IcemanE is to be executed for alledgedly conspiring to kill the town, his tendency to lie being the last straw. An unusual man, he tended to keep himself to himself, and was not a particularly vocal member of the town council, his mind often wandering to his workshop at home, where he liked to put together all kinds of things. Alas, this potentially multi-talented life is brought to an end by the town's rope, in rather painful contrast to yesterday's success.

IcemanE - Jack of all trades - lynched day 2

Midnight in our little village. The moon is high in the sky, the air is cold, and it's unnaturally quiet. Some are not sleeping, vollkan being among their number. Once again he burned the midnight oil, poring over his tomes, trying to find something interesting that might help unravel what's going on here. So engrossed in his work, that he didn't even smell the smoke until it was far too late. Someone had very deliberately started a fire here, knowing exactly what to do so it would spread quickly, cutting off each escape route. Three storeys up, and with fire exits not yet having been invented, vollkan's only choice was between burning or falling to his death.

In a different area of town, Huntress was deep in thought, in her more modestly sized home. A superstitious woman, who believed strongly in the power of prayer, Huntress had spent much of her previous evening channeling her powers towards the late ilord, without much success. Having completed her meditation, she was ready to sleep, though probably not in the way that was soon to happen. As she crossed briefly in front of window on the landing, something flashed on the side of her vision, at the same time as the sound of breaking glass, and Huntress crumpled to the ground, a neat bullet wound in the side of her head.

The following day the six survivors find the two victims, vollkan spread eagled on the ground outside his house, having taken the quicker death, and Huntress on her landing. Vollkan was a known scholar, whilst a brief search of Huntress's house tells you all you needed to know. Downhearted, you all steel yourself for a tough day.

vollkan - Researcher - killed night 2
Huntress - Priest - killed night 2

It's day 3. With 6 players alive, it's 4 votes to lynch/boost.

Day 3, Final Votecount - Lynching
Green Crayons (2) <- Xtoxm, Incognito
Xtoxm (4) <- Raging Rabbit, eldarad, Green Crayons, TDC

Boost Count
Xtoxm (4) <- Raging Rabbit, Green Crayons, TDC, eldarad
Green Crayons (2) <- Xtoxm, Incognito

---------------------------

After a fierce debate, Xtoxm is chosen to be today's victim. And because there's nobody else apart from Incognito that they trust with a boost, Xtoxm will take the second one with him to the grave. For the second time in his life he experiences that tremendous high that can't be adequately put into words, but this time he isn't given much chance to enjoy it, as he's overpowered by four angry men. Like those before him he protests his innocence, but it's only after he's stopped breathing that the group realises it's gone spectacularly wrong again.

Xtoxm - Mayor - lynched day 3

Despite the fears of some that a fourth day wouldn't happen, it undeniably has. Only three of you emerge today, to the sight of two dead bodies, only some 10 yards apart. It appears that Incognito and Green Crayons have killed each other, Incognito's body full of holes, and Green Crayons with a neat bullet wound in the forehead. Incognito's last bullet was well used, as a search of Green Crayons's possessions soon reveals him to be a member of the mafia, and a slippery one at that.

So now there are three, and you all know that it's do or die today. Choose correctly and the village will be free from the mafia forever, choose wrongly and there won't be a village left to talk about. Choose carefully.

Incognito - Vigilante - killed night 3

Green Crayons - Mafia Encryptor - killed night 3

It's day 4. With 3 alive, it's 2 votes to lynch, and remember that no boosting is needed today before someone is lynched.

...

Raging Rabbit, eldarad and TDC. These are the three individuals who were to decide the fate of the village on this final day. After an unusually long and ponderous debate, eldarad and TDC square off, leaving Raging Rabbit with the choice. After going back and forth in his mind a few times, he locks onto TDC, and eldarad quickly helps him string him up before he changes his mind. To his immense relief, he's got the right man.

TDC - Mafia Rolecop - lynched day 4

eldarad - Villager - Survived
Raging Rabbit - Villager - Survived

Town wins! I'm in a rush, so roles, nightactions and comments will have to come later today.

Generic Role PMs
Mafia Godfather wrote:You head the mafia in the village. Your fellow mafiates are X and Y. You have a better understanding of the supernatural than most of those primative villagers, and you intend to use that to help your group take over. Each night you may talk privately to your partners and decide on a player you wish to kill, as well as the player performing the kill; note that you may choose not to kill if you think that will further your goal.

Both your fellow mafiates are incredibly loyal, but also less experienced than you. At one point during the game, at night, you may choose to share some pearls of wisdom with one of them, in effect providing them with a boost. You know that boosts on you will have the following effects:

No boost: As above
1 boost: You become immune to kills during the night, and any investigations on you will show you as being innocent.
2 boosts: You are so good at this that you can give out as many boosts as you want, at the rate of once per night.

You know that any further boosts will have no effect, and that the same is true of everyone in the game. Be warned that the people of the town may not know this, at least to begin with, so be careful what you reveal.

You win when every living player is mafia aligned.
Mafia Encryptor wrote:You are a part of the mafia in the village. Your fellow mafiates are X and Y. Each night you may talk privately to your partners and decide on a player you wish to kill, as well as the player performing the kill; note that you may choose not to kill if you think that will further your goal.

Your field of expertise is meant to be concealment. You have no extra abilities at the moment, but with just a little more dexterity, you could help your team greatly. You know that boosts on you will have the following effects:

No boost: No special abilities
1 boost: The mafia may freely talk during the day.
2 boosts: You have a one shot ability to conceal the alignment of anyone in the mafia who gets lynched.

You know that any further boosts will have no effect, and that the same is true of everyone in the game. Be warned that the people of the town may not know this, at least to begin with, so be careful what you reveal.

You are the most junior member of the mafia here, and truth be told, you're feeling underconfident. Your speciality is supposed to be investigation and detection, but you don't feel you'd be able to do it without being caught. A boost would probably set that straight though. Boost effects on you are as follows:

No boost: No special ability
1 boost: Each night you can investigate a player and find out whether or not they have any power.
2 boosts: In addition to the above, you find out a player's specific role, and how many boosts they have, if any.

You know that any further boosts will have no effect, and that the same is true of everyone in the game. Be warned that the people of the town may not know this, at least to begin with, so be careful what you reveal.

You win when every living player is mafia aligned.
JOAT wrote:You begin the game with a small vial of invisibility potion. Once during the game, at night, you may drink it and use your invisibility to investigate another player in the game, receiving an innocent or a guilty result.

You win when all anti-town roles are eliminated.
Note: on first boost receives one shot vig ability. On second boost receives one shot unightkillability to be used on any night of choice.
Doctor wrote:You start the game with a sprig of a very rare herb, which has extraordinary healing powers. Once during the game, at night, you may choose another player; they will be immune to all nightkills that night.

You win when all anti-town roles are eliminated.
Note: turns into full doctor if boosted. If boosted twice, he can also self protect once.
Researcher wrote:Your ambition is to know about everything in the universe, but it's fair to say you won't be achieving that whilst scum are killing people at night. Nevertheless, boosts in your intelligence could allow you some useful information.

You win when all anti-town roles are eliminated.
Note: if boosted, gets the information Electra relayed. On a second boost: knows that the scum are aware of what their own boosts do. Knows that boosts that come during the night can come from both scum and town.
Vigilante wrote:You begin this game with a gun and one bullet. You may use it on another player during the night, if you so wish.

You win when all anti-town roles are eliminated.
Note: Becomes a full vig when boosted. If boosted twice, he is unightkillable on any night when he doesn't kill.
Priest wrote:You have the ability to make people stronger through the power of prayer. Twice during the game, at night, you may boost any other player of your choice.

You win when all anti-town roles are eliminated.
Note: One boost allows the priest to boost infinitely (once per night). Two boosts allows her to boost once per day also.
Mayor wrote:You have no special abilities, but you're a charismatic person and a born leader.

You win when all anti-town roles are eliminated.
Note: one boost gives him the secret vote. Two boosts also adds a one shot govenor ability.
Villager wrote:You are an inhabitant of the town.

You win when all anti-town roles are eliminated.
Note: Does not boost at all.

TDC wrote:I have this nagging feeling that killing vollkan over Incognito wasn't quite the right decision.
This was the biggest error, I thought. Without Incognito alive, day 3 would have been proper lylo, and a Xtoxm lynch would have ended the game. The researcher role is weak in comparison, though the second boost did have the potential to clear Huntress (though it was useless here because she was getting vigged that night anyway). I thought scum played well otherwise, with TDC in particular managing to stay under nearly everyones radar until the endgame. I'd seen this endgame coming since day 3, and imagined the town would lose it.

The setup was tricky. I wanted alot of poweroles; I didn't want multiple possibilities of vanilla townies being put up for boosting and trying to decline it because it wouldn't do anything. Of course, that made the setup hard to balance, and in general the mechanic seems quite swingy. I was disappointed when Jahudo was lynched day 1 without even being able to boost a scumbuddy, and really worried that town would cakewalk it after that. Fortunately it didn't turn out like that, between Incognito's Guardian hate and Iceman playing his role terribly. It's a shame scum didn't really get to use their abilities, because I think some of those are useful. The Godfather role was not really designed to allow it to claim booster to confirm itself, more just because I couldn't think of what else to give it but wanted to reward it being boosted. The original version of this setup did contain a mafia roleblocker, and to be honest I think that would have been better than having the rolecop in. I blame Ether for talking me out of it, I think. Roleblocker is good for punishing early poweroles who claim. I may be running a Boost 2 in theme park, so any comments or ideas about balance are appreciated.

The only town role I wouldn't include again is probably the mayor. I underestimated the potential effect of the double vote in an endgame; and in some situations the double vote would reward managing to get online before the other two players, which isn't really what I had in mind. I did feel bad for Xtoxm when he was lynched. What the hell guys >_<

Thanks to all the players, all the replacements, and of course to Elmo. I hope you all enjoyed it.
