Emperor penguin - Aptenodytes forsteri
Adult emperor penguins are black and white, with a yellow tinge around their necks. Chicks of the species have a gray colour. This bird lives on the coast and the nearshore, with the largest populations being in the Ross Sea and the Wendell Sea around Antarctica. While they only really reside in Antarctica, vagrant populations can be found in areas around the Southern Ocean, such as New Zealand and the Falkland Islands. This bird feeds on a variety of fish, especially the Antarctic silverfish and krill. They don't really have any predators, but emperor penguin chicks can be predated on by larger sea creatures if left unattended, like sealions and killer whales. The emperor penguin is significantly decreasing in population size as a trend, and is rated as NT (Near Threatened) by the IUCN. The main threat to emperor penguins is climate change threatening the icy habitats of Antarctica which it lives in. It was first rated this way in 2012, having been rated as Least Concern in 2009. The IUCN also describes this penguin species as "a fundamental element of the human relationship with Antarctica" which I think is accurate.
