Herring gull - Larus argentatus
Herring gulls are mostly white and light gray in colour, and they have pink legs. They can be found along coastlines, around lakes and reservoirs, and even in fields and rubbish tips. This bird can be found throughout Northern Europe, and to some extent in Southwest Europe. It will feed on a wide variety of animals, as it is an opportunist. It likes to eat crabs in particular, but will also eat human food - either in rubbish tips, or right off our plates if we're eating outside. The species is rated as LC (Least Concern) by the IUCN due to its relative success and wide distribution. However, the population size of the herring gull is decreasing. Interestingly, despite evolving to only live and breed on the coast, an increasing number of herring gulls now live inland, likely due to human civilisation facilitating them.
