the idea is that self-compassion gives you the mental resources to, like, grow and keep pushing forward
and that these benefits exceed those you might get from paying extra attention to your failures
but actually i think the balance works out this way not because paying attention to your mistakes doesn't work, but because wallowing in your failures isn't quite the same as identifying and making the necessary changes that will prevent them later
i know from personal experience that it's easy to think beating oneself up is productive and helpful, but all that is conditional on finding a way to be better next time
you can wallow to the point of completely hating yourself and still be the same person! it's a scary idea imo. and yet still a bit seductive huh
