No, really. Now that I think about it, I have no idea why I asked that. Could be due to the fact that unconsciously I would be more careful if you were black but I am not sure.

When I joined this site, I was a software tester for mobile business applications and the song PokerFace was not yet written by Lady Gaga
Now I test lottery and gambling software as my job. It's funny how my life has turned out. Somewhere a Time Traveler is laughing madly

I hate to engage in this thread again, but I think dahill is completely justified in his reaction here. populartajo, you don't have to be "a racist" in order to do or say racist things. And "I prefer white women" is a racist thing to say. If society were perfect, maybe not, but it certainly isn't yet. There is still a lot of disparity in treatment of people based on gender, race, sexuality. Look at films, and the media as a whole, for evidence. How many films have a black woman in the lead? How many have a white guy in the lead? Does this match the actual proportion of these people in society? If not, why not? How about the way the black women who are biggest celebrities, and who you name as attractive (Beyonce, Angelina Jolie, Rihanna) have much lighter skin than average. Society treats light skin as more attractive (and therefore acceptable), and this is reinforced by the media, which in turn reinforces society.
Same for gender. How many female characters can you count in films who are not romantically linked to any other characters? And how many male characters? Stories, and people, assume that the "default" person is male, and a character will only be female if it is necessary. Don't stories and adventures happen to women too?
And sexuality. Do I need to keep asking these questions?
For what it's worth, I find shaft.ed's talking about his asian fetish disconcerting as well, since asian women have a history of being objectified and sexualized in western media.
And I don't exactly think that you are bad people for doing it, but I do think you don't realise. By stating your preferences, (and I don't know what you are honestly trying to achieve by doing so), you are reinforcing these injustices in society.

I think the whims of your libido are generally so irrational that to say that someone who is more turned on by white people is not racist, just as some one who is either homosexual or heterosexual is not sexist.

This is pretty much what I wanted to say.
Yes. I don't see how personal romantic/sexual preferences have anything to do with society as a whole. Person A might not be sexually attracted to Person B, but that doesn't mean he or she will treat Person B any worse than anyone else. Fenchurch, I'm also sure there's a specific category of people you are not attracted to. Doesn't have to be deliniated by race, gender, ethnicity, nationality etc, but there are probably things that turn you off.
Edit: I was also unaware that Angelina Jolie was black.
Cybele wrote:I think the whims of your libido are generally so irrational
Eh, I disagree. I think sexual preferences are, like all of our thoughts and opinions, tempered by what is considered fashionable, popular, normal, unusual, in society.
Cybele wrote:some one who is either homosexual or heterosexual is not sexist.
I wasn't saying they were. Apologies if I'm misreading you.

Angelina Jolie is mixed race, I guess I included her as she was chosen to play a black character in "Wanted." I'm pretty sure this reinforces the pale-skinned-"black"-women-are-preferred-in-mainstream media rule.

If there is I am unaware of it, and if I was I would not go around touting "I'm prefer X social group" because I can't see what positive effect that achieves. Especially if the group is question is the dominant one in current society. Lastly, if I was, I would question what societal stereotypes and assumptions it was based on, as I try to do for most things.

Why does there need to be a positive effect? Stating your own opinion/preference is mostly for its own sake and not others' anyway, and since conversation started moving in that direction I didn't find pop's comment out of place or inappropriate at all.
Fenchurch wrote:Lastly, if I was, I would question what societal stereotypes and assumptions it was based on, as I try to do for most things.
Why? Also, why do you assume that these preferences are based on societal stereotypes rather than your personal sense of aesthetics?

Um, since when? Last I checked, both Jon Voight and Marcheline Bertrand were white.

You are missing my point. It doesn't have to be a social group, it could be something as simple as "I prefer taller people" or "I tend to prefer X hair color" or "I'm not interested in people who engage in X activity." The point is there is always some kind of exclusionary characteristic. It doesn't need to be racial or socially enforced.
