Hmm. I actually am not sure. I guess I just assumed she was African American. For some reason, I actually find numerous black women to be pretty but do not find black men to be very appealing. (There are some exceptions, of course) Like Will Smith, for instance ^^; ( I don't really think he is "hot" though, mostly just cute and charming looking)-

I don't know where you're getting the idea that asian women have such a history. Outside of the "5 dolla sucky sucky" and "me love you long time" jokes I don't know of any other references. These stereotypes developed during WWII and Vietnam when the military would frequent asian brothels because they're weren't any others around. What do you think the ratio is of asiain women shaking their money maker in skimpy outfits on national television to white, black or hispanic women doing the same? (hint it's very know, trust me I'm paying attention ).Fenchurch wrote:For what it's worth, I find shaft.ed's talking about his asian fetish disconcerting as well, since asian women have a history of being objectified and sexualized in western media.
Furthermore, I've had an asian fetish since I first started being interested in girls as a kid. Do you really think I would have absorbed and expressed such social stereotypes when I was in elementary/middle school?
Finally, the most prevelant stereotype I've noticed towards asian women is that they are subordinate and "better behaved." This is not something that I find attractive in a mate. My wife is the antithesis of this stereotype. In a relationship I prefer to be submissive. And sexually I view the ultimate goal as to give your partner as much satisfaction as possible, not to be serviced by or to use your partner in any which way you desire.-

I did hear she was like half-sister to Martha, but she was also a slave. So genetically maybe she was more white than black, but I think she was considered black socially.Mirth wrote: Elvis: Sally Hemmings was also like 75% white.Talk nerdy to me.

A Face is considered a necessary quality in some cultures to be a person. Looks like I don't have to burn. When I joined this site, I was a software tester for mobile business applications and the song PokerFace was not yet written by Lady Gaga
Now I test lottery and gambling software as my job. It's funny how my life has turned out. Somewhere a Time Traveler is laughing madly-

Socially, if you were as little as 1/16th black, you were black. (At which point many "blacks" could and did pass as "white," a term, which, even today, in some places in South and Latin America doesn't actually entail white skin.) Sally Hemmings was actually very light skinned. More accurate to say she was biracial and a slave than black and a slave. Generally, I just dislike how biracialness is so often discounted in race discourse. Even if you look more like the darker skinned parent, the lighter skinned parent still exists and needs to be accounted for.elvis_knits wrote:

That's because racism was invented in the 1700's as an excuse in order to justify slavery; before that point, there were of course different forms of xenophobia and such, but the kind of direct color coded racism we think of today is almost entirely an invention of that era. For example, many of the early English explorers of the new world mentioned what the Native Americans wore, how they lived, ect, in great detail in their writings, but never bothered to mention their skin color; it wasn't considered important at the time.Mirth wrote:Generally, I just dislike how biracialness is so often discounted in race discourse.
The problem was that the first justification of New World slavery, the idea that "it's ok to enslave them if they're not Christian" theory common amoung Spanish and Porteguse that dates back to the re-conquest of Spain from the Muslems, stopped working when a lot of the slaves converted to Christanity, so they needed to come up with a new excuse.
And if you're trying to justify slavery so you can keep making money off your slaves, then it's much easier if you don't have to prove your slave is 100% African American in order for you to be justified keeping him or her as a slave. Which is where the "one drop of blood" thing came from; if you had one drop of African American blood, you were an African American, and therefore it was ok to enslave you.
Racism isn't something that "everyone has a little of", nor is it somehow natural; it was invented so people could make money off of slavery.I want us to win just for Yos' inevitable rant alone. -CrashTextDummie-

Not accusing you, just the easiest examples. I am against it, it is illogical, but that doesn't mean I don't know what xenophobia is. And while I think I am not that bad at reckognizing it, and trying to stop it, it doesn't mean it goes away.
So why wouldn't other people have it too?-

Yos, yeah, I'm aware of that. There was also a lot of "fun" "science" involved if I recall correctly.
Russians? No, actually. But that's not xenophobia. That's a dislike of an ethnic group that I am a member of.mykonian wrote:

Muslims? One of my closest friends growing up was Muslim. I don't understand the Muslim-hate going on because just because some overly-religious wackos decide to make other peoples lives hell doesn't mean that everybody of their religion is one of them.-

Eh...there may be a certain amount of natual fear and distrust of someone who seems "different", but it's really not that hard to educate people that we're not really all that different, ect. Xenophobia can be a problem, especally if people are exposed to a constant stream of negitive images about a certain group as "outsiders", but it's certanly not anywhere close to universal. Not accusing you, just the easiest examples. I am against it, it is illogical, but that doesn't mean I don't know what xenophobia is.
