Mini 210: Secret Ballot Mafia- The Ballotbox is Closed!

Post Post #0 (isolation #0) » Fri Jul 15, 2005 2:32 pm

Post by JereIC »

Welcome to Secret Ballot Mafia! A town of only 12, Happyfunville is in danger of being overrun by the vile mafia presence, who have taken to killing one innocent person each night. Now that the time is grim, the villagers turn to their time-honored tradition of the secret ballot to fight back. Each day, after lengthy discussion, they will each fill out a ballot, feed them to the Voticutioner, and the winner... er, loser of the vote will be thrown into the Pit O' Snakes, Happyfunville's main tourist attraction. Drastic times call for drastic measures, but if drastic measures mean sacrificing your right to vote in secret, well, the mafia has already won.

The game has ended! This page has been restored to its night 1 glory for anybody who wants to keep the suspense in re-reading.

Filling up the ballot box (12):
Astronaut
ChocoCid
halfpint
ibaesha (replaces Lubabah)
inHimshallibe (replaces Ogre)
KingEnigma
mathcam
rajrhcpfreak
SpeedyKQ (replaces Pariah)
Thok (replaces Save The Dragons)
Tyfo (replaces Someone)
Yoko Kurama

Filling up a plain cedar box (0):

Secret Ballot Mafia

Night
  • The game begins in night.
  • The thread is locked during night, and you may not discuss the game with other players unless your role specifically says you may.
  • For night one only, please confirm that you received your role by PM. This is the townie role PM, for reference:
    Townie:
    Your name could be here!

Welcome to Secret Ballot Mafia! You are a townie. Talk in the day, vote when duty calls, and fear the night. You have no night choices. You win when all anti-town elements are eliminated. Please confirm that you've received this role by PM as soon as possible. Good luck, and have fun!
  • Get night choices to me as soon as possible. If night lasts too long, I will prod and may set a deadline.
  • When all choices are in, or the deadline passes, the night ends and day begins.
Day
  • The thread is unlocked during the day. You may only discuss the game with other players in this thread.
  • You may not quote any PM I send you, including role PMs.
  • If you're dead, you may post a single "Go team!" post. No relevant information.
  • Be polite and respectful of other players. If you think somebody is breaking this rule against you, PM me. Don't try to fight fire with fire on this front.
  • If the day gets too long, I may set a deadline. Once the deadline is reached, the day ends and voting begins.
  • If you want to end the day and start voting, write
    VOTE NOW
in big bold letters in a post. If you later change your mind, and don't want to vote immediately, write
    NO VOTE
in big bold letters in a post. Text will be ignored unless it is in bold.
  • If you write
    Vote: That guy
, I'll assume you want to start voting, but you aren't actually voting for That guy.
  • Once a majority of players want to vote, the day ends and voting begins.
Voting
  • The thread is locked during voting, and you may not discuss the game with other players unless your role specifically says you may.
  • To vote, simply PM me with your vote. You may vote No Lynch. A majority of this choice is necessary to end voting without a lynch.
  • Voting continues until one player has a majority of votes, or all votes are in.
  • If no player has a majority after all votes are in, a run-off vote takes place between the two top vote getters. Everyone votes again in the run off, but you can only vote for one of the two options, or abstain.
  • If a tie occurs, mafia votes will be considered tie-breaking. If mafia votes aren't sufficient to break a tie, it will be broken by roll of the die.
  • Vote totals are not revealed in game.
  • Once a player has a majority of votes, s/he is lynched, his/her role revealed, voting ends, and night begins...
If you have any questions, or catch any mistakes, PM me. Good luck, and have fun!

It was a dark night. It was also a stormy night. In fact, it was a dark
and
stormy night in Happyfunville, and the Happyfunvillagers cowered in fear in their homes, staying as far from the rain, and the bloodshed, as possible.

Not Yoko Kurama, however. And, as he was confronted by the dark figures in the equally dark alleyway, he began to to wonder about the potentially lethal side-effects of his nightly constitutionals.

"Do any of you need help?" asked Yoko. "I am a trained medical -."

"Yoko, yo' so
dead
!" said one of the gangsters, getting to the point.

'Actually, I feel fine, it's not like I been stabbed in the gut or anything... oops, speak of the devil."

Yoko pitches forward, gives a dramatic last breathe, and them slumps into the underworld. Hours later, the town finds poor Yoko's body, as well as his poor never to be used again stethoscope.

Yoko Kurama, doc, is dead at the start of day 1! With 11 players alive, six are needed to start voting.

Let's hope the sun illuminates some suspects.

Edit: Rajhcpfreak is having computer difficulty, and may only be able to log on early morning during the work-week for a while.

If the vote goes to a runoff, will there be a discussion period for us to talk about who's going to be lynched?
No, the thread remains locked through the whole voting process.
Also, if it goes to a runoff, will "no lynch" votes be accepted, in case we seem to have 2 townies up for vote?
No, unless "No lynch" wins first or second place in the first round.

I've prodded Lubabah.

I'm moving to Washington, DC tomorrow. I should be able to post Tuesday through Friday at a nearby coffee shop with WiFi, and starting Saturday I should have cable internet (yay! ^_^ ). Since my access is iffy, however, I won't impose a deadline until at least Saturday.

Now, back with the talking!

Yikes, moving in is a ton of work. I'm pretty close to done now, and should be able to devote daily attention to the game. My apologies for this negligence to moderation duties.

In other news, we might just have a replacement for Ogre! I've got to confirm with him before announcing the replacement, but hopefully everything will be in place by tomorrow.

You quickly gather in front of the Voticutioner, write a name on a piece of paper, and then slide it into the massive machine's magical vote counting box. The box grows heavier and heavier with paper, until suddenly it passes some fine-tuned point, and it detects a majority has been reached against one player. You hear a great creaking of ancient gears and arcane technology, and somewhere somebody sees an exhausted hamster stagger out of the machine, only to be forced back by army ants. Then all at once, you hear a sound like a cannon going off, and the machine stops.

"Did it break?" somebody asks.
"Is there a tie?" somebody else asks.
"Did you guys notice I'm standing on a see-saw," asks rajrhcpfreak, "and does anyone else hear that sound like a giant anvil falling out of the sky, and about to hit the other end of this see-saw?"

Before anyone can answer, the anvil, shot into the air by the Voticutioner's own cannon, hits the other end of the see-saw, launching rajrhcpfreak into the air and directly towards the Pit O' Snakes. He flies into the snakes, who are quite rattled to have another intuder (rattled, get it? like a rattle snake? ah, you'll laugh later).

"Aaaaaiiiiiieeeee!" rajrhcpfreak yells out, "There are so many snakes! They're wriggling all over me, biting into my flesh and picking my pockets! How is a simple townie supposed to survive so many snakes? I curse my townie brethren who sent me to this torture, and the scum as well who started it!" He is quickly enveloped in snaky doom. The town goes to rest for the night, and so do the snakes, who are cold-blooded.

rajrhcpfreak, townie, was lynched! Now it is night, get your choices to me if you have 'em.

Well, good morning everybody! Everybody but halfpint, that is, for whom it was a bad morning following a no-doubt worst night. Y'all find her stabbed to death in her condo, along with a pendant stapled to the wall which reads "Go Happyfunville Townies!"

Halfpint, townie, was stabbed night two. The rest of you should get your day on!

Rise and shine, cupcakes, Day Three has started! It looks like the Night Kill Fairy paid a visit to
KingEnigma
, giving him a couple of stab wounds in exchange for all of his cash. Kind of like the opposite of the tooth fairy, but meaner. KingEnigma was an operational backup doc.

KingEnigma, backup doc, has been killed! With seven still alive, it'll take four calls to start a lynching.

The sun slowly sets in Happyfunville, and the Voticutioner slowly starts cranking to life, thanks to it's new anti-solar panels. Once again, somebody's blood will be the seed of freedom's tree...

Dawn breaks in the quiet, underpopulated town of Happyfunville. It breaks, in particular, upon Astronaut's broken body, emptied of the life that it used to contained, and filled now with stab wounds. How, you may ask, can something be filled with what is essentially holes?

Magic.

We used magic to get to the moon in 1969, and I'm sure going to use it to finish this memo by the due date. The only question now, is how?

Astronaut, townie, has been stabbed to death!
It is now Day 4. Five remain, so it will take three to start a vote.

Happyfunville, taking a page out of Alaska's playbook, follows the unusually long day 3 with an unusually short day 4. I'm pretty sure Alaskan elections are decided by caribou hunting competitions, though.

The Vot'cutioner is waiting, and he's hungry for votes.
If we were in Venice, we'd all buy new boats!
As the tally is counted, it is Thok who is routed, and thrown to the Valley of Snakes.

"Be good, my goonies," the godfather cries,
"And those Happyfunvill-ians, we'll get those guys!
"Take to the streets, start some unrest!
"But look after my cat, he'll be a pest."
His last words spoke, the man does croak, and the town shouts, "Hooray!"

But now it is night, and our schedule is tight. What's your next play?
Before this gets painful, the readers disdainful, send your PMs straight away!

Thok, mafia godfather, has been lynched!
It is night 5! You know who's waiting for your night choices.

The last night of Happyfunville is nasty, brutish, and short. Even after proclaiming himself to be scum, SpeedyKQ escapes the notice of the Voticutioner, which takes Thok instead. Now an obvious wanted man, Speedy does the only thing he can; find his quarry before it finds him. Speedy finds inHimshallibe in a back alley, hunting under piles of garbage. With a flying leap, he pushes inHim down onto his belly, stabbing him again and again in the back. Speedy stands up, and flips inHim over to administer the coup de grace, only to meet the business end of inHim's double barrel shot gun.

inHimshallibe, vigilante, has been stabbed!
SpeedyKQ, mafia goon, has been shot!

Leaving only ibeasha, a townie, and Tyfo, the all-too-quiet and lucky serial killer...

...

Nah, I'm just kidding, he was a cop.

Congratulations town, you have defeated the mafia and won the game!

Full details later tonight, possibly tomorrow morning. In the meantime, do discuss amongst yourselves.

ROLES

Godfather: Save The Dragons/Thok
Welcome to Secret Ballot Mafia! You are the mafia godfather. Your two goons are ChocoCid and Pariah/SpeedyKQ. You three may discuss the game with each other during voting and night. Each night, you may also choose to attack one other player in the game. As godfather, your are responsible for getting this choice to me. You win when the mafia controls the vote. Please confirm that you've received this role, and get your night choice to me by PM as soon as possible. Good luck, and have fun!
Now, I made a goof with this PM.
The godfather was supposed to be a felon, and his vote only counted in run-offs.
It was meant as a way to balance the mafia a little bit, when they really did have a lot of power. However, the godfather was also supposed to know that, but when I wrote STD's PM I forgot to include it. I caught my mistake when I was prepping the old PM for Thok, and considered including it then, but I figured it'd be bad form to change the information the godfather had mid-way through the game. I turned out not to matter, however.

Goons: ChocoCid and Pariah/SpeedyKQ
Welcome to Secret Ballot Mafia! You are a mafia goon. Your godfather is Save the Dragons/Thok, and your co-goon is Pariah/ChocoCid/SpeedyKQ. You three may discuss the game with each other during voting and night. Each night, you may also choose to attack one other player in the game. Your godfather, Save the Dragons, is responsible for getting this choice to me. You win when the mafia controls the vote. Please confirm that you've received this role by PM as soon as possible. Good luck, and have fun!
Doc: Yoko Kurama
Welcome to Secret Ballot Mafia! You are a doc. Each night, you may choose to protect another player from one attack that night. You may not protect yourself. You win when all anti-town elements are eliminated. Please confirm that you've received this role, and send your choice tonight to me by PM as soon as possible. Good luck, and have fun!
Back up Doc: KingEnigma
Welcome to Secret Ballot Mafia! You are a backup doc. Currently, you have no night choices. If a doc should die, you take his or her place the night following his/her death, and can choose to protect another player from one attack that night and each subsequent night. You won't be able to protect yourself. You win when all anti-town elements are eliminated. Please confirm that you've received this role by PM as soon as possible. Good luck, and have fun!
Cop: Someone/Tyfo
Welcome to Secret Ballot Mafia! You are a cop. Each night, you may investigate another player, and I will tell you if they are pro- or anti-town. You win when all anti-town elements are eliminated. Please confirm that you've received this role, and send your choice tonight to me by PM as soon as possible. Good luck, and have fun!
Vigilante: ogre/inHimshallibe
Welcome to Secret Ballot Mafia! You are the vigilante. Each night, you may choose to attack another player, in the hope they are mafia. You suffer no penalty for accidentally killing a pro-town player, except the wrath of the town. Please tell me if you intend to make a kill each night or not, even if you don't know who you're going to kill right then. That way, I can end the night without worrying that you're coming to a late decision. You win when all anti-town elements are eliminated. Please confirm that you've received this role, and send your choice tonight to me by PM as soon as possible. Good luck, and have fun!
Townies: Astronaut, halfpint, Lubabah/ibaesha, mathcam, rajrhcpfreak
Welcome to Secret Ballot Mafia! You are a townie. Talk in the day, vote when duty calls, and fear the night. You have no night choices. You win when all anti-town elements are eliminated. Please confirm that you've received this role by PM as soon as possible. Good luck, and have fun!
"What the hell!?!" yells the ghost of mathcam. "No vote cops? That's the obvious role for this game!"

Well, I had an earlier version of this game with a pretty simple vote cop, but I scratched him because I really wanted to see how people would react without any vote information at all. I think the game was more interesting when you couldn't check each other for who was sticking to the consensus. I also just don't like cops that much. Too much information, makes the town too lazy.

I do wish I had included a mayor, though. I think a mayor could be a pretty strategic role in this game.

Night choices and, yes, the votes, coming up in the next post.
