Mini 1011: Help! My Computer Got Infected! (Game over!)

Post Post #0 (isolation #0) » Tue Jul 20, 2010 9:48 am

Post by StrangerCoug »

It was a normal weekend in my bedroom. I wished the room were nicer—specifically, I wished there were another electrical outlet and I needed to clean this place—but it could be worse. My sloppy purple and gray paint job could have been no paint job at all, leaving just plain white. I could have considered getting something other than a dartboard at casino night back when I graduated and instead gotten cheap stuff that I didn't expect to last until now. And I could have decided I didn't want a computer in my room and take my biggest obsession elsewhere.

I was checking through my games on mafiascum.net when, all of a sudden, the computer switched off. Everything else on the outlet was fine, the plug was securely in place, and the computer was the temperature it normally was. Thinking that it was just a normal occurrence since this computer was not in perfect shape (are there many computers that are?), I switched the computer back on, and when the operating system booted up, my virus scanner told me it picked up an infected file. I cleared the message, then it told me that there was another viruses. And another. And another. And another. And so on
ad nauseam
.

Suddenly, I noticed the wallpaper changed. It was a
Wheel of Fortune
one, with the puzzle board normally reading "JEFFREY LOVES WHEEL OF FORTUNE". It now read "HA HA HA WE GOT INTO YOUR COMPUTER". I tried getting back into Firefox, but it refused to open. So did most of the games on my computer. The virus seemed to be speading, and I did not have the money to have a professional do a scan. I had to disconnect the Internet cable to ensure I didn't infect other computers.

Who dared get into my computer and cause a mess?

RULES
  1. This is a closed setup, which means the only roles you will know in advance are your own and that of any other player I mention in your role PM. All other role information is secret, including how many players with a certain role exist and even if the role exists in the first place. Yes, a game with absolutely no vanilla townies is possible. It's been done before.

  2. To vote for a player, either put vote tags around the player's name or bold the word "vote" followed by said player's name, e.g. VOTE: StrangerCoug. As long as I can tell to whom you are referring, spelling does not count and I will accept abbreviated or otherwise shortened forms of the name of the vote's recipient. If you change your mind about whom you want lynched, you must post the unvote tags or bold an unvote, preferably in the format UNVOTE: StrangerCoug. You may also VOTE: No Lynch, unvoted the same way as before.

  3. A majority of votes is required for a lynch, even at deadline. Once a lynch has been decided, it is final and further votes and unvotes do not count for the current day. If deadline is reached with no player having enough votes for a lynch, the day ends in an automatic No Lynch.

  4. Once you die, I'll allow one "bah" post that doesn't contain any game-related content if you wish to make it, but you must thereafter stop posting in the game. Said "bah" post is the only post a dead player may make during twilight. Living players may continue to talk during twilight as long as they follow all of the rules.

  5. You are not forced to like each other, but the fact that you badly want so and so offed does not give you the right to insult him or her. Please keep your hatred of people or groups thereof to yourself. Profanity is not in and of itself banned, but if it gets out of hand, it falls under this rule.

  6. Do not hide text or otherwise hinder its readability by using spoiler tags, invisible or encrypyed text, etc. You may, however, post in any color that can be easily read against the forum background other than
    purple
    or
    spoilered cyan
. (I know it sounds arbitrary to forbid a specific color, but I'm saving my favorite color, purple, for mod use since I am the mod :P The backup mod below asked me to forbid his color too.)

  7. Impersonating the moderator is prohibited.

  8. Unless you're the moderator (that's me, obviously), co-moderator (that's nobody), or backup moderator (that's animorpherv1) of this game, please do not delete or edit any posts in this thread.

  9. You are not allowed to discuss this game outside of the thread unless I tell you otherwise, nor are you allowed to discuss other ongoing games in this thread.

  10. Do not quote or pretend to quote any private communication, either from me or from anyone else you are allowed to talk with at night. This includes your role PM. You are allowed to paraphrase, but you are not allowed to plagiarize. If in doubt as to your paraphrase's legality, PM me with the wording you want to use.

  11. Claiming to be scum with someone else is prohibited.

  12. I will issue a prod to any player that does not post for 72 hours without notifying me of his or her absence. (I'm sorry, but I do not check the V/LA thread.) If you are prodded, you will have 48 hours from the time of submission to post in thread. Failure to do so may result in replacement. Keep in mind that I have the board time down to the second. I will only prod the same player twice—after that, he or she must post every 72 hours to ensure that he or she remains in the game.

  13. The fastest and preferred way to get ahold of me is by PM'ing me, but you may also communicate to me in thread if it is day or twilight and you are still alive. To do so, bold "Mod:" followed by what you want to tell me, as in
    Mod: Please prod StrangerCoug
    or
Mod: StrangerCoug should have five votes, not four.
Please use your judgment call in whether or not what you want to tell me should be public knowledge before talking to me in the thread. In additon, I will not entertain questions regarding possible night actions, nor will I answer questions about a person's role unless you happen to be the person in question and you ask me privately.

  14. Rule violations will be dealt with case by case based on severity. This can be a warning (of which I will only give two per player), ejection from the game, or even a modkill. Modkills are not a fun experience for anybody—the players affected automatically lose, I do it in the manner that I consider most harmful to their factions, and I die on the inside every time I have to do it.
    PLEASE
save all of us the pain and be on your best, rule-abiding behavior.

  15. I am not God. If I make any mistakes whatsoever, please let me know.

  16. All rules are subject to change. In my previously modded games, things have come up that I didn't think about, and both my own and other's actions in those games have helped shape and modify these rules. It may happen again here.

  17. The most important rule of all, saved for last for what I think is a very good reason:
    HAVE FUN!
    Enjoy! And good luck!
For the sample role PM, StrangerCoug wrote:StrangerCoug, you are a
motherboard, a vanilla townie
. You are the backbone behind my machine, responsible for making everything else on the computer communicate to each other. But can you communicate "Go away!" to the viruses?

You have no gun, no badge, no first-aid kit, no magic thingamajiggers, absolutely nothing special except for three things—computer literacy, your brain, and voting abilities. But those three things are all you need to get rid of the viruses on my computer!

You win when all threats to my computer have been eliminated from the game.

Please PM me back acknowledging that you understand and confirm your role. The thread is here and you are playing a day start.

Thread locked while I decide on a mod ruling regarding Tazaro's actions. I really don't like that he's linked to four ongoing games, and I'm tempted to modkill him.

If I decide to do anything other than modkill town, then I will allow UncertainKitten to proxy her vote to xvart until she gets back from V/LA. (That of Me=Weird is also noted.)

I've decided that the best thing to do is to get rid of him. The links will stay there until the mods of those games see them.

Tazaro, who was a
DRAM module, a vanilla townie
, has been modkilled on Day 1 for linking to four ongoing games.

Night 1 will end in 72 hours.

After a power surge disabled the memory on my computer, I tried to come up with a way to even boot this damn thing. I had to borrow from a spare, but that was fine for the time being.

I burned myself on the audio card installing the stand-in DRAM module. It was like accidentally touching a baking sheet fresh out of the oven. Taking that as a cue that it didn't work anymore and without an available replacement for this one (or the money to get a new one right now), I had to accept that I was without sound.

When I booted the computer, I heard a crackling noise and saw smoke from my USB drive. Not my handy little fix-it programs! I needed those! I took it out—fortunately, this was an electrical short that didn't have a major effect on the temperature of the part, so I was able to take it out easily and throw it away.

Meanwhile, I kept trying everything I could...

vezokpiraka, who was a
USB drive, a jack of all trades
, has been zapped on Night 1.
xvart, who was an
audio card, a vanilla townie
, has overheated on Night 1.

The new DRAM module is effectively an NPC to make the story plausible—I did not revive Tazaro or bring in another player to play for him. With that out of the way, Day 2 is go with nine alive and five to lynch.

The mouse seemed to be very uncooperative, so I unplugged it from the system and threw it out, using MouseKeys to navigate instead. Unfortunately, that didn't make the system any better. What damage will the viruses inflict now?

I had a report written up that I needed for work this morning. I did it at the last minute (I hated my job), so I set my alarm extra early—3:30 AM—to do it.

Around the time I'm due to be ready to leave, I sent it to the printer, which immediately made a popping noise and went up in smoke. I canceled the print job, unplugged the printer, and decided that I had to send the report to my work e-mail, betting that my boss would be OK with it. I couldn't get away with bloody murder, but she usually was fine with me explaining what happened. The worst that's happened to me was a verbal warning.

With my computer on the brink of collapse, there wasn't much time to get rid of the viruses. These are vicious ones, too. Could they be caught in time?

The Blu-ray drive on my computer didn't seem to work the way it should, so I opened the case and pulled it out. Apparently, I pulled the Yellow virus out with it, because my antivirus software isn't picking that up anymore. And that's a

It was payday weekend. I was spending my time playing a first-person shooter with viruses as the enemies. I grabbed the joystick, ran into this hall, and fired the laser gun I had—to take out my CPU. The two viruses left—Panther and Theta—started gaining on me.

Suddenly, I saw sparks. Not on the screen, actually coming from stuff on the desk. Before I knew it, neither my joystick nor my keyboard worked. The viruses would consume my in-game character—and the rest of my computer. We know where the rest of my money's going...

I decided to switch on the TV and watch the news. A hacker—namely, PieMan—was arrested here in Chaparral for breaking into computers and infecting them with viruses. The news story claimed that Panther, Theta, and Yellow were his creation, but I knew him well enough to know that the arrest to be, at least in part, wrongful. He wasn't into viruses all that much, preferring spamming and breaching security systems.

It would be a depressing day for me. I had spent at least $1,000 across several paychecks to build this thing and everything was rendered inoperable in four days. Not my poor machine...

FakeGod, who was a

screl1, who was a

PieMan, who was a

diginova, who was the
Panther virus, a Mafia tailor
, has survived the endgame.
Nobody Special, who was the
Theta virus, a Mafia roleblocker
, has survived the endgame.

CONGRATULATIONS DIGINOVA, NOBODY SPECIAL, AND UNCERTAINKITTEN; YOU, THE MAFIA, HAVE WON!

ORIGINAL ROLE PM'S
Ademisk, you are a
printer, a cop
. You make the perfect medium for making wanted posters, and through you the IT department will know who is sending my computer viruses.

Each night, you may PM me the name of a player you would like to investigate. I will tell you whether that player investigates as innocent or guilty to you. You will repeat this process until the end of the game or you die, whichever happens first. If you decide not to investigate a certain night, it'd be nice if I know. You are not allowed to investigate yourself.

You win when all threats to my computer have been eliminated from the game.

Please PM me back acknowledging that you understand and confirm your role. The thread is here and you are playing a day start.
bv310, you are a
DRAM module, a vanilla townie
. (DRAM stands for
D
ynamic
R
andom
A
cces
M
emory.) You are the main memory unit in my computer, keeping bits (literally) of information about various things on my computer. But can you get information about the viruses that have come up on this machine?

You have no gun, no badge, no first-aid kit, no magic thingamajiggers, absolutely nothing special except for three things—computer literacy, your brain, and voting abilities. But those three things are all you need to get rid of the viruses on my computer!

You win when all threats to my computer have been eliminated from the game.

Please PM me back acknowledging that you understand and confirm your role. The thread is here and you are playing a day start.
FakeGod, you are a

gandalf5166, you are the

(there isn't a tailor article in the Wiki yet; so the word "tailor" links to the role of which this is a variant). You, along with your partners in crime the Theta virus (Nobody Special, who is a roleblocker) and the Yellow virus (UncertainKitten, who is a one-shot bulletproof goon, have infested my computer and plotted to corrupt it and make me go buy a new one.

Each night, I need you to decide on a player whom you want to kill, if any, and which of you will PM me the hit. In addition, I need you specifically to tell me whom, if any, you would like to tailor and Nobody Special specifically to tell me whom, if any, he would like to roleblock. The former's target will investigate as the opposite of what he or she normally does to a sane cop that same night, and any attempt by the latter target to use a night action will fail. The first attempt to nightkill UncertainKitten, regardless of who makes it or whom Nobody Special roleblocks, will also fail. You will repeat this process until the end of the game or you die, whichever happens first. You are not allowed to nightkill yourself or your partners or tailor yourself (you
ARE
, however, allowed to tailor your partners), nor is Nobody Special allowed to roleblock himself.

I have made a QuickTopic thread where you may discuss your night actions here. You may speak with each other in this thread from now until Day 1 starts to discuss strategy. You may not talk to each other outside of the thread during the day.

Nobody in this game is a scanner.

You win when all remaining players on my computer are the Mafia or nothing can prevent the same.

As punishment for your evil deeds, you must post in leetspeak and you investigate as guilty to a sane cop. On odd-numbered nights, you may PM me one player whom you want to kill. You will repeat this process until the end of the game or you die, whichever happens first. You, along with your partners in crime the Panther virus (gandalf5166, who is a tailor—there isn't a tailor article in the Wiki yet; so the link is to the role of which this is a variant) and the Theta virus (Nobody Special, who is a roleblocker), have infested my computer and plotted to corrupt it and make me go buy a new one.

Each night, I need you to decide on a player whom you want to kill, if any, and which of you will PM me the hit. In addition, I need gandalf5166 specifically to tell me whom, if any, he would like to tailor and Nobody Special specifically to tell me whom, if any, he would like to roleblock. gandalf5166's target will investigate as the opposite of what he or she normally does to a sane cop that same night, and any attempt by Nobody Special's target to use a night action will fail. The first attempt to nightkill you, regardless of who makes it or whom Nobody Special roleblocks, will also fail. You will repeat this process until the end of the game or you die, whichever happens first. You are not allowed to nightkill yourself or your partners, nor is gandalf5166 allowed to tailor himself (he
IS
, however, allowed to tailor you or Nobody Special), nor is Nobody Special allowed to roleblock himself.

I have made a QuickTopic thread where you may discuss your night actions here. You may speak with each other in this thread from now until Day 1 starts to discuss strategy. You may not talk to each other outside of the thread during the day.

Nobody in this game is a BD-ROM drive. (BD-ROM stands for
B
lu-ray
D
isc
R
ead-
O

M
emory.)

You win when all remaining players on my computer are the Mafia or nothing can prevent the same.

Please PM me back acknowledging that you understand and confirm your role. The thread is here and you're in a day start.
vezokpiraka, you are a
USB drive, a jack of all trades
. (USB stands for
U
niversal
S
erial
B
us.) The 21st-century equivalent to a floppy disk, you are a versatile little thing capable of almost anything. But does "almost anything" cover busting viruses? We'll have to see what you are capable of...

On you are four executable programs: azure.exe, night.exe, regency.exe, and wisteria.exe. Each night, you may select which program to run and on whom. One of them investigates the target, one of them protects the target, one of them gives the target a temporary post restriction and one of them does nothing. Unfortunately, you don't know which program does what, and unless the execution gets roleblocked, the programs can only be run once before getting corrupted. You will repeat this process until the end of the game or you die, whichever happens first. If you decide not to run a program a certain night, it'd be nice if I know. You are not allowed to run a program on yourself.

You win when all threats to my computer have been eliminated from the game.

Please PM me back acknowledging that you understand and confirm your role. The thread is here and you are playing a day start.
(MOD NOTE: As determined by random.org, azure.exe post-restricts the target into being allowed only to vote and unvote in thread the next day, night.exe does nothing, regency.exe performs a voyeur peek on the target, and wisteria.exe protects the target.)
xvart, you are an
audio card, a vanilla townie
. Your thoughts on who gave me viruses can be made loud and clear. But can you get people to listen?

You have no gun, no badge, no first-aid kit, no magic thingamajiggers, absolutely nothing special except for three things—computer literacy, your brain, and voting abilities. But those three things are all you need to get rid of the viruses on my computer!

You win when all threats to my computer have been eliminated from the game.

Please PM me back acknowledging that you understand and confirm your role. The thread is here and you are playing a day start.

MOD NOTES
  • The Mafia quicktopic title "4D 61 66 69 61 20 51 54" is how you write "Mafia QT" in hexadecimal. I picked it because it's a neat 256 bits in length.
  • The USB drive's program's actions were originally not given in the role PM and fixed as azure.exe protecting, night.exe doing nothing, regency.exe post-restricting and wisteria.exe doing the voyeur peek. Charlie suggested I tell what the programs might do, and after animorpherv1 reviewed the resulting change and commented that night.exe might be too obvious of a name for the dud program, I decided to randomize the actions.
  • Expect to get complaints about vigging in LYLO, screl1. Hitting a town-aligned player gave the Mafia the win.

Me=Weird wrote:I totally agree with vezo's above post.

On the one hand, no-one suspected me, like at all. Which is totally new and awesome.
On the other, I wasn't right about anyone. Grr.
Maybe I'll do better in wheel of fortune.
I did pre-in already, didn't I, SC?
Yes. I'm still having it reviewed, which is why I haven't entered it in the queue yet (you know how fast that thing sometimes goes).

Three pre-/in slots left for that game if you want it. Not bastard this time.

I fail to get a lot of jokes both online and off, so I don't blame the Internet.
