Political Coalitions game (Round 4)

Post Post #0 (isolation #0) » Sun Jan 30, 2011 11:40 am

Post by Hoppster »

The Political Coalitions Game
Modded by Hoppster
stolen from Geoff Wong at shattered.org[/i]

tl;dr at bottom of post.

AimYou are the representative of a politcal party* of your choice (fictional or real). It is your job to negotiate your party's way into a coalition that has over half of the seats in parliament. However, being the corrupt party/politician that you are, you don't paticularly care about reform, referendums or radical change:
you're just in it for the money
.

Basic info:
  1. Each political party starts the game with $100m.
  2. The game takes place during a series of rounds, or 'elections'.
  3. At the beginning of an election, all parties must pay $20m into the pot.
  4. Any party that is unable to do so is eliminated from the game (as a 'Bankrupted Party'). Their remaining money is still added to the pot.
  5. Each party learns how many seats in parliament the have won.
  6. A coalition government is formed if a group of parties can all agree on the division of the pot and also have a majority (at least 16) of the 30cseats in parliament.
  7. After a round ends (whether or not a political coalition government is established), due to the fickle and instable nature of politics another election is held immediately, and everybody must contribute $20m into the pot again.

Round/Election Information:
  1. With
    n
players left in the game, I will select
    n
'Election cards' that have the combined total of 30.
  2. At the beginning of a round, after you have paid $20m into the pot, you may PM me a multiple of $20m which you are going to pay extra (which represents how much you spend on advertising/campaigning in addition to the $20m). For each $20m paid, you get an extra 'ticket' in determining the election results. If you choose not to spend additional funds on campaiging, you must PM me to say that.
  3. Once everybody has PM'd me, I will then use random.org to determine a random ranking of all the players. For each additional 'ticket' recieved for funding, you will get your party placed one extra time in the generator.
  4. Then, the party ranked first recieves the Election card with the highest number of seats. The party ranked second recieves the Election card with the second highest number of seats... etcetera.
  5. If you paid for additional tickets, you can still only win one election card. Your highest ranked ticket will determine which rank you are, and I will ignore the rest.
  6. Once I have revealed how many seats each party has one, it's negotiating time! You can negotiate with people through this topic and also over PM.
  7. In order to have a split of the pot, you must have a coalition that has a majority of seats in parliament, but also a unanimous agreement on how the pot is going to be split amongst each individual party.
  8. You will have 3 days to negotiate (with one extra day added if the round lasts over a weekend).
  9. Once the deadline is reached, all communication must cease. You then PM me a coalition that you are proposing, along with a
    clear
division of the pot. This should be within 48 hours (preferably ASAP).
  10. If a coalition is proposed by all parties involved, and the division of the pot is the same for all parties involved, they win that round and the pot is split as proposed.
  11. Otherwise, nobody wins the pot and the next round, everybody's $20m is added to that pot.

Other information:
  1. The election cards/seat division will not be the same throughout the game.
  2. Even when the number of players drops (due to eliminations), there will still remain 30 seats in parliament.
  3. No one election card will by itself have a majority (ie. a coalition will be required each round).
  4. The basis for this game can be found here. The rules are not exactly the same.
  5. The game ends either when there are only 2 players left or if I decide that one player has accumulated ridiculous money and is sure to win.
  6. The smallest denomination of money that may be used is $1m
. You cannot have divisions of $500k/$500k etc. This is because the initial game just has $1 as the smallest denomination but I added an 'm' to make it more exciting! (Yay!)
  7. All rules/information/deadlines are subject to change.

what about the Rape Nazi Party?
Rape Nazi Children party gosh
I feel that I am being mocked for having morals. :igmeou:

Okay, I'm going to bow to peer pressure (even if it is only in my head), and repeal the ban on unethical party names. I actually couldn't care less if somebody joined as the Nazi Party, however my worry is that somebody else would be offended. But it seems like most people posting here really couldn't care less, so... anything goes on the conditions that: 1) No other players find it personally offensive (and complain); 2) I do not find it offensive. (I'm not having a "FUCK YOU HOPPSTER Party" under any circumstances.)

Awesome. That's plenty. I'll be kicking off Round 1 tonight within a couple of hours.

For anybody who fails to /in before I start Round 1, PM me. I will be accepting /ins at the end of Rounds 1 and 2 (however you will start with $20m less per round that has passed, ie. if you miss Round 1 you will be able to /in for Round 2 onwards but you start with $80m).

EDIT:
Just to get people into the swing of things, for Round 1 you will be unable to spend additional money on campaigning. This will be avaliable in future rounds.

In the newly-founded country of Mishagonamashaland (based somewhere in Hawaii), an election has just taken place. Parties taking place range from the weird to the... less weird.

So, you all pay your $20m election fee + campaign expenses, and then wait for the votes to roll in.

... Unfortunately, you all did pretty poorly in the election results. Nobody has anything near a majority.

Of course, we can't just leave our poor country Mishagonamashaland without a government. Without people to lead them, the public will go mad and probably jump off a cliff or something.

(Plus, being part of a government has it's financial rewards. You can claim expenses on a speed-boat or something, or just ask for your expenses in cash or something.)

So, it's up to you to form a temporary coalition government until the next election!

Election (1) Results

Number of seats won in parliament per party

5 seats:
chenhsi (Anarchist Party)
4 seats:
yabbaguy (Rent Is Too Damn High Party)
4 seats:
UltimaAvalon (Pirate Party)
4 seats:
Twistedspoon (All of Your Base Party)
3 seats:
Cogito Ergo Sum (People's Front of Judea)
3 seats:
Cirno (Ultimo Dragon party)
2 seats:
Drench (Australian Sex Party)
2 seats:
werewolf555 (Libertarian Party)
1 seat:
Zang (Socialist Party)
1 seat:
TonyMontana (Get Rid Of Slimy girlS (GROSS))
1 seat:
gandalf5166 (Party of the One Ring)

Pot:
$220m

Reminder: You need at least
16
/30 seats in Parliament to form a successful coalition, but you must also have an
unanimous
agreement on how to divide the pot. The denomination of money that you may use is $1m.

You may communicate via PM or this topic (I recommend using both).

As it is the first round, I will have this round run for 4 days. Communication must cease at 10pm, Friday 4 February (GMT). PM's containing your proposal for a coalition must get to me by 10pm, Sunday 6 February (however please ASAP. The sooner I recieve these, the sooner we can start the next round).

You wait for other people to improve that offer. Say for example, three of the 1-seaters accept 5mil, and a two seater accepts 10mil. Then you have 5 seats for just 25mil and you can boot out the Anarchist Party and pocket 45mil. Or maybe Cirno undercuts CES. Etcetera. You people not in on the deal need to show some initiative, instead of wallowing in your own tears. (*ahem* gandalf5166).

To clarify, I am not going to end this round early. It's only two more days anyway. This is to prevent me accidently screwing over people who are working via PM to wrap up a different deal and just pretend to agree to the decision to prevent people getting suspicious.

Aaargh. Sorry for missing the deadline, but for what it's worth:

ROUND 1 - DISCUSSION OVER

To reiterate, this includes communication over PM as well. You now have just over 36 hours to PM me your coalition proposal.

NB: Even if you have no coalition to propse, PLEASE PM ME TO CONFIRM YOU STILL WISH TO PLAY NEXT ROUND. A couple of people distinctly did not post in the topic, and although they may have been actively pushing for a coalition via PM, I cannot know this for sure. If I do not recieve a response from you, I may decide to replace/eliminate you.

I also would prefer for those who PM'd me with an earlier coalition proposal to PM me again (whether with the same proposal or not). Just for organisational reasons really.

Discussion progresses well. A coalition looks certain, then... a few parties jump ship in an attempt to pocket a bit more money for themselves. After all, that luxury yacht isn't going to pay for itself.

Discussion progresses even better. A coalition looks certain, then... a few parties jump ship in an attempt to pocket a bit more money for themselves. After all, those 2 luxury yachts and that 3rd mansion aren't going to pay for themselves.

Discussion progresses fantastically. By the end of the negotiating time, everybody is confident that a coalition will be formed.

Result: No Coalition

Oh dear. Now you're going to have to stick with your crappy little boat and 2 mansions. Or...
We can hold another election! Perhaps you'd better get your campaign up to scratch this time though.

Pot:
$440m

You now have just under 24 hours to PM me an amount between $0m and however much money you have remaining (in a multiple of $20m) for the amount of money you wish to spend campaigning. Each $20m gets you one extra 'ticket' when the number of seats won is determined. PM's must be to me by 10pm, Monday 7 February (GMT).

NB: There was some confusion due to Lowell's replacing in, however, this was not the reason the coalition failed. I will not disclose who 'betrayed' the coalition. Note that it may be more than one person.

Lowell and yabbaguy failed to PM an amount to spend campaigning, so I assumed that they wanted to spend no money.

The Libertarian Party (werewolf555) currently have funds of $0m after spending all their funds campaigning this round. As such, they
must
get at least $20m out of this round or face going bankrupt.

I will have this round run for 4 days*. Communication must cease at 10pm, Thursday 3 February (GMT). Then, you must PM me your coalition proposal by 10pm, Sunday 13 February (however please ASAP. The sooner I recieve these, the sooner we can start the next round).

Who said it was random?

The game this is based off uses a deck of cards to represent the number of seats, which obviously then have to be pre-determined. Just like that, I also just choose numbers on a whim, and if they add to 30, great! Otherwise, I just fiddle with the seat numbers adding 1 here or taking off 2 there until we've got 30.

I personally think it's more interesting if there's a diverse number of seats. I could in some future rounds go for more a more even spread if you wish (but then most people would have 3's). Obviously, if I did, I won't tell you when, or people will just not spend any money campaigning.

Erg. To clarify, communication was due to end today (Friday), at 10pm (GMT), despite what I said in my post previously (which was one day early). If you clicked the link, you would have still been taken to a link with the time for Friday. However, I am willing to extend the deadline by one day to compensate for my incompetent organisation if people request so.

ROUND 2 - DISCUSSION OVER

To reiterate, this includes communication over PM as well. You now have just under 24 hours to PM me your coalition proposal.

NB: Even if you have no coalition to propse,
PLEASE PM ME TO CONFIRM YOU STILL WISH TO PLAY NEXT ROUND
. If you have already sent me a PM with your coalition proposal/confirmation for the next round, you do not need to PM me again (however you may if you wish to change your proposal).

Spittle flies around the room as people accuse other people of renegaging on agreed deals and of... being terrorists?

Oh well. All's fair in politics.

Result: Coalition Formed!

Australian Socialist's front of Judea Libertarian all of your sex are belong to us
Twistedspoon (4):
$150M
Zang (4):
$150M
Cogito Ergo Sum (2):
$100M
Drench (3):
$20M
werewolf555 (3):
$20M

Huge kudos to CES for pocketing $100M with just 2 seats.

Once the people realise that the government is happy to just sit and let the money roll in, they promptly call for yet another election.

Pot:
$220m

You now have just under 24 hours to PM me an amount between $0m and however much money you have remaining (in a multiple of $20m) for the amount of money you wish to spend campaigning. Each $20m gets you one extra 'ticket' when the number of seats won is determined. PM's must be to me by 10pm, Monday 14 February (GMT).

You do not need to PM me if you cannot spend any money, however, I did not recieve (or recieved and lost) coalition proposals from Lowell or gandalf5166, so you two
must
PM me to confirm that you still wish to play.

NB: The coaltion proposed actually was not completely unanimous: all but Zang had CES getting $90M rather than $100M (which actually would have a total of $430M as opposed to $440M). It was obvious that they all wanted the same coalition though.

Lowell wrote:Anyway, even though I'm losing, this is a great concept for a game.

I've been thinking about how to run this with party preferences (aka assign all parties "right", "left", "center-left" or something like that in a way that priveleges certain kinds of coalitions over others), but can't quite think of a way to make it work as smoothly as this. Any ideas?

Just idle chit-chat while I await my one seat in the new parliament.

Also,

FACEPUNCH Party
. It feels luckier.
Sure.

Election results to come shortly. Any suggestions on improving the game are welcome.

Gradually, the funds of each party are seeping away. Each round is becoming more and more crucial to survival.

Spoiler: How much extra everybody spent campaigning
$60m

Zang

$40m

Drench
gandalf5166

$20m

chenhsi
TwistedSpoon
yabbaguy

Nada

Cirno
Cogito Ergo Sum
Lowell
TonyMontana

Election (2) Results

Number of seats won in parliament per party

5 seats:
Zang
5 seats:
Drench
4 seats:
Lowell
3 seats:
Cirno
3 seats:
werewolf555
2 seats:
yabbaguy
2 seats:
Twistedspoon
2 seats:
gandalf5166
2 seats:
chenhsi
1 seats:
Cogito Ergo Sum
1 seats:
TonyMontana

Pot:
$220m

Reminder: You need at least
16
/30 seats in Parliament to form a successful coalition, but you must also have an
unanimous
agreement on how to divide the pot. The smallest denomination of money that you may use is $1m.

You may communicate via PM or this topic.

Drench, gandalf5166, TonyMontana and werewolf555 all have funds of $0m left. As such, they
must
get at least $20m out of this round or face going bankrupt.

I will have this round run for 4 days*. Communication must cease at 10pm, Friday 28 February (GMT). Then, you must PM me your coalition proposal by 10pm, Sunday 20 February.

* Unfortunately, I am V/LA from Sunday to Thursday. Any ideas on how to work around this are welcome. I will be asking for temporary/possibly permanent co-mods but other alternatives may be possible.

I accidently closed the tab which had the randomized list in, so I am unable to post it up this round.
This won't happen in future. I swearz it.

Also, please ensure in future that you have enough money to spend how much you want to campaigning. Gandalf wanted to spend $20m more than he had.

If you don't continue the game I gave my life for nothing.
There are two people who seem to want me to continue.

Number of grovelling PMs in my inbox: 0.

I'm so confused.

Okay, you send mass PMs reminding people the game exists (

@ Twisted: Meh. Lack of responses to the last round was a bit disheartening.

That's alright, it's just that it was 4 other people as well.

XALXE, YOU'D BETTER HAVE SENT OUT THOSE MASS PMs.

Fine... <<

I'm not one for editing my own posts. (Especially as I quoted a 'please' which SURELY WAS GOOD ENOUGH.)

Mass PM to be out WITHIN 5 MINUTES (assuming I don't get distracted).

GAWDAMNIT I INCLUDED A WINK. IT'S THE UNIVERSAL SYMBOL OF A JOKE.

Expect several PMs from the players.

Also, no, not porn. Even if it was, the context implies that porn is only avaliable late at night, which is just plain wrong.

Eh. Prescence acknowledged.

Having said that, I am fairly forgetful, so I may actually forget that you've already indicated that you wish to continue*.

Porn is avaliable from the internet, which is open 24/7. PROTIP: You're using the internet right now.
