I would prefer not to go into that. A mafia game should be able to function and create enjoyment from the players without the moderator having to explain how it was "supposed to work". The fact that I ran a game that most of my players did not enjoy means I failed as a moderator. If you want to discuss that with me, you can PM me I guess, I just think that saying in a public forum how I "wanted it to work" is disrespectful to the players. I wanted something, yeah, but it didn't work. It didn't work because I constructed the game poorly. End of story.

Ok, now that I have a little distance from the game and have had some time to think about it, here are my thoughts on why it did not work. My conclusion is that the failure of this game was 100% on me, and 0% on you guys. In fact, you guys are all really good sports for sticking this game out to the end. You would have been well within your rights to abandon it. Here are my major conclusions:

1. Too reliant on the theme.
2. Inadequate reward for in-game actions
3. Bone-headed moderation.
4. A setup which did not account for *all* possible combinations of living players.
5. This should have been classified as "bastard mod".
6-10. I sorely fucked up Zdenek's safeclaim. I should have been more clear with him that "role impersonator" was something he was supposed to fill in the blanks about instead of a role in and of itself.

I will post the role PMs and night actions, but let's tackle these four points first.
1. This game was too reliant on the theme.
I expected this game to be able to function, in terms of setup, on how the players interpreted the theme and evaluated their roles in relation to other roles in the game. This was not good moderation on my part. I created a few setups that went through review, and stupidly I picked the one that I thought made the most sense for the theme. I thought that if it got down to a LyLo situation where Shake or Frylock was left, the thought process would as much be "well who is really the most likely to have killed Meatwad" instead of "well whose motivations have been the least townish". This was a mistake. I tried to put faithfulness to the theme above function as a good setup and not surprisingly it didn't work at all. This was a lot more obvious in hindsight, but it's something I should have realized during setup.

2.
I did not reward my players for making good actions.
Simply put, not having alignment flips was boneheaded. My thought process would be that it would recreate the sense of chaos present in the show and players would enjoy some of the uncertainty, especially if at the end of the game they were rewarded with a town win by correctly guessing that Shake was the ultimate culprit. It was a nice idea, but frankly it approached the game from the point of view of an observer and not that of a player. I did not think fully through how an alignment flip-less game could be fun to the players, and the game suffered greatly for it.

3.
Boneheaded moderation.
The long pauses. That was stupid. I would like to claim that they killed player enjoyment, but frankly that's giving the setup far too much credit.

4.
I did not properly consider late-game playerlists.
This, if nothing else, was my most boneheaded mistake. Frankly, having a kill-less mafia and two killing roles with a possible third (with an inventor present) seemed like it would work, balance-wise. I was completely wrong there. I did not properly account for the possibility of the killing roles being dead and the mafia still being alive. Again, hindsight.

5. Should have been bastard mod, not slightly bastard. Enough said.

6-10. I'm really sorry about that, Zdenek

That all being said, I should have been up-front with the masons about being mafia. Allow me to repost the PM exchange I had with implosion on the subject of his alignment during day 1:

Now onto your ability: every night you can pick someone and, using the astounding powers you possess, you can figure out who they are. Seriously. It's like you've got eyes in the front of your head or something! Hopefully one of those people will be a chick with a big butt. Baby likes back!

So just to recap: you (implosion) are Master Shake. You can investigate someone every night to find out who they are. You are in a mason group with Frylock (Ghostwriter).

Untrod Tripod wrote:I will assure you that your alignments are the same. That is all I will tell you. You tell the town whatever you want to tell them, as long as it isn't a quote of this PM
My mistake was in assuming that this was at all clear. I should have told him right then and there that they were mafia instead of leaving it ambiguous. That is my fault.

Role PMs in the next post.

You a spider, man. You a spider wearing a disposable diaper and a shower cap. Also you make rap albums. People keep killing you, but that don't keep you from coming back as a lower life form. If someone kills you, you can still be putting out a hit list through your albums. It's crazy man. Your label keeps on dropping you even though you told them. You were like "I'm gonna come back!". It's bullshit, man.

Anyway, the point is if you get killed, you can still make one vote every day by letting me know who you want to die. The other players won't know who cast that phantom vote. They fools!

Know who you are? Man can't you tell? Ain't it obvious? You're MC Pee Pants! You may be friends with Satan, but you win with the town, dawg.

Also on a hopefully obvious note, you don't have the ability to talk to anyone except for me about the game outside of the thread.

http://www.quicktopic.com/45/H/CNAq4eFXXK7WE

You have three abilities, each of which you can use once. You can freeze someone with your eye lasers, thus preventing them from using any abilities they wanted to use that night. You can examine a dead body and use your scientific and detective prowess to find out whose forensic evidence is on it. Also you can follow people to see where they go at night. Because you are a creep.

So just to recap: you (Ghostwriter) are Frylock. You are a Jack of all Trades who has one roleblock, one forensic investigation and one tracker investigation. You are in a mason group with Shake (implosion).

So to recap: you (VibeBox) are Willie Nelson, the semi-compulsive vig.
you win with the town
Untrod Tripod wrote:Guten tag. You are creatures from Pluto. You mostly fly around in your awesome spaceship und get into hijinks of one sort or anuzzer. On ze plus side, you can use your epic space beam, of which only high-ranking diplomats have authorization to use, to bring people onto your ship for ze night. For barbeques...OR MELTING.

to recap: you (Fate) are the Plutonians. You pick one person every night and beam them aboard your spaceship, where they can not get into any mischief. You win with the town
Untrod Tripod wrote:Hello. You...can get people to say these words.
I. AM. SOFA. KING. WE. TODD. ED.

Then you make them say it very fast. But not too fast. It lose its meaning. Also...you can...use your shaman powers to raise chicken. From the dead. You are...most comfortable...with chicken...but you can try it...with human.

to recap: you (Seacore) are Billywitchdoctor.com (one convenient location, worldwide). You have a one-shot ability to resurrect a dead player as a vanilla version of their alignment. You win with the town
Untrod Tripod wrote:GENTLEMEN. I'M PRETTY SURE...THIS WILL WORK!!! You can invent things! And then inflict those things upon others! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

so, to recap: you (podium123456) are Dr. Weird, an inventor. Every night you can invent something new and the next night choose a person to give your invention to. You will be told the name of your invention, not what it does. Be careful who you gift it to. You win with the town

Do more work than that? Nah, we're not doing that here.

So to recap: you (The Butterfly) are Carl, a hated townie (it takes one less vote to lynch you than every other player). You win with the town.
Untrod Tripod wrote:You a duke of new york. A-number-one. Don't you let anyone catch you calling you boy. You'll make them pay. You so cool that Isaac Hayes songs follow you around wherever you go. Who are you?

you (VasudeVa)... are BOXXY BROWN! Unfortunately, because you're just a box you have no special abilities other than being cooler than ice. Also once per night you can send a mod-approved one-sentence PM to another player through me. You win with the town.
Untrod Tripod wrote:You are from the Moon, and your culture is far beyond anything on this primitive rock. Your culture has evolved beyond the concept of "possessions" and so the things others have will become yours, by way of your actions.

You (Zinive) are the Mooninites. You may choose one player every night and steal something from them. You win with the town
Untrod Tripod wrote:You are a gigantic clump of mold that grew out of a mess in the Aqua Teens' kitchen. You can offer people a chance to eat your head (you're half penicillin after all).

you're a doc and you win with the town.
KILL KILL KILL ONE HUNDRED KILL KILL KILL ONE HUNDRED KILL.

YOUR SPECIAL ABILITY IS TO TAKE SOMEONE INTO THE WOODS, RAPE THEM AND THEN BEHEAD THEM. NOT NECESSARILY IN THAT ORDER.

So, to recap: You (xenophon) are the number One Hundred. You are a serial killer and thus win if you are the last man standing. You can also use George Lowe, role impersonator, as a safeclaim.

There are a couple of things in the setup that were not revealed in role PMs. Namely with Ol' Drippy, The Mooninites and Dr Weird.

Setup:
Mafia/Masons: They will be told that they are a mason group, but they are in fact a kill-less mafia
Frylock - JoaT (1 RB, 1 forensic, 1 tracker)
Shake - Cop who gets the name of the role. Results would have flavor instead of alignment or ability, for example "This player is a large growth of mold who grew out of the incredible mess you left in the kitchen" or "this player is Ol Drippy".

Killing:
Willie Nelson - semi-compulsive vig
One Hundred - SK

Protecting:
Ol Drippy - Doc who loses their vote after a successful protection and dies after a second
The Plutonians - Take people to their ship (RB/Protect)

Other:
BillyWitchDoctor.com - Witch Doctor (can one-shot resurrect a dead person, who returns as a vanilla version of their alignment)
MC Pee Pants - Can cast one vote a day from the grave (must vote my PMing mod and the vote will show up in the count as being from "???").
Dr Weird - Inventor (33% block, 33% kill, 33% rolecop)
The Mooninites - Thief (Can steal the ability of Frylock, BillyWitchDoctor and anyone who has an item)

Townie:
Carl - Hated townie
Boxxy Brown - Townie who can send a player a short mod-cleared message every night

Other way around, I was the vig and he was the SK.

Also: cocks.

I don't think this game was that bad... there were some player-made mistakes as well. I can agree on the time lapses, but even most of those weren't your fault. I think this set-up could work with some refinements.
"Fuck you. I opened up my heart to you and you stabbed it a thousand times." - Gamma, to me, right before confessing to being the town vig and murdering my scum partner N1.
