From a balance perspective it reduces the swing from a day 1 PR lynch/N1 PR kill in a way similar to Universal Backup, but with more options.

I was thinking those things that dig up alignment flips, a la SE IV and SAIII.

As for universal backup, I would say that is town. Being able to selectively CHOOSE the role you get is not a town role imo.

That would imply a distinct lack of Vigilantes in this town though, as a scum vigilante is not a possibility that gets past any balance review committee ever. Or he can't copy Vig roles.

The flexibility of it.

Universal Backups usually help aid against the swinginess of town PR being eliminated right at the start.

Selecting feels off for me. For example, in the game I played where my partner had this ability, he could even copy the "Innocent Child" role if he wanted to.
Copying the cop role would also be a nifty way of clearing yourself as scum.

The only factor here is that those are large theme games. I don't think the general principal of it changes though. Flexibility like this favors scum in my experience.
