A heraldic banner is usually square or rectangular.

First one (the image) has to deal with web banners, specifically. The second one has more to do with traditional banners. I can find more, including examples.

And actually, 300x250 and 300x600 are standard ad sizes; the first if you scale it up 2x is almost exactly the banner they chose.
