1) Play the campaign, if for nothing else to get a feel for the UI/unit control/etc
2) When you go to multi, use a significant amount of your practice matches to try and get a feel for each race.
3) Prepare to qq.

play against the ai to try and get a feel for each race, then skip practice league.
FTFY
I also disagree with playing the campaign to get a feel for the UI/unit control/etc. All of that can be done by playing against the ai in an actual game scenario (and with units that are actually in the game and not only Terran units).
Fairly recent FB conversation with a friend regarding IdrA. Kinda shocking with the stat, but not all that really.
Friend
idra sucks after losing the first game in a BO3
he's like 0-15 if he loses the first game in a BO3
or something ridiculously terrible
AGar
shit really?
Friend
yeah
idk how he's that terrible
AGar
well some of the stats are pre-Alex Garfield pep talking him where there was a completely valid strategy of "gay him out in Game 1 to put him on tilt
and then you'd almost guarantee you could win the series"

I'm sure that after losing the first game, among
everyone
the win rate is probably something like
80%
. Is Idra's a bit higher? Maybe. But it isn't so far out of whack imho. I think people are taking way too much from it.
It was more of just a laughing type deal. And yes, Idra is past the whole "Tilt Greg, GG" phase, but I'm sure that stat was mostly from the months prior to October where he hit his stride again.

IdrA was on 20 losses in a row in series where he lost the first game before he -finally- broke that streak at Providence. That's pretty far out of whack.
God I forgot how annoying it is that consume and spidermine has the same sound.
Also I've gotten so used to SC2 casting that BWs UI is annoyingly clunky at times (even disregarding the lack of production tab because I've heard arguments that it actually hurts the suspense) but smaller things like the inability to see energy on units.
Also Destiny, Catz and incontrol have been in a group skype chat streaming all night discussion / obs a bunch of pro practice games, it's been real good shit.

I don't know the situation with GSTL VODs, but holy shit, you have to watch the finals if you didn't see them live. Finally a (more than usual) compelling argument for LAN in HotS, and (MAJOR SPOILER)
