Whether it's arbitrary, or truly random, random voting is always useless.
A:Vote: B
B: OMG why are you voting for me?
A: No reason, it's a random vote.
B: Oh, okay.

No, arbitrary voting at the start of day 1 isn't totally useless. Will a mafia member arbitrarily vote his scum-buddy, or not? Will you vote for the same person the last guy random voted, or vote someone with no votes on him? Pro-town roles with some information (masons, cops, ect), will vote slightly-better-then-random. Or you might want to vote someone at the start of day 1 for meta reasons, or because you expect them to react, or because of something about their playstyle, or whatever. It's not much, but arbitrary voting can start the game rolling because it does start to involve choices and behavior that can give (subtle and obscure) clues to someone else's alignment; purely and provably random votes won't.Prof. Guppy wrote:Whether it's arbitrary, or truly random, random voting is always useless.
That being said, it's good to switch it up a bit. Sometimes I "random" vote (almost never really random, of course), sometimes I random vote in my second post or something, sometimes I don't vote, and sometimes I manage to find some minor scumtell-like-thing in the second post and go after that with my vote instead.I want us to win just for Yos' inevitable rant alone. -CrashTextDummie-

Random voting isn't the issue here, sometimes you don't always have a reason and if your voteisarbitrary, it's not necessary to make up a "joke reason". Dice tags are different, you're saying in public "here is my vote which Iguaranteehas no basis for reasoning behind it and is therefore meaningless". It's distancing yourself from your actions before you've even taken them.[i]The hungry maw of Twilight snaps, but shall not have its fill,

Agreed - sometimes you can get a sense (albeit a slight one) of someone's townness/scumness based on how they random vote at the beginning. (Most frequently, it's a sense of town-likeliness.) Dice voting prevents this potential read, and it is decidedly anti-town to negate a possible (even if slight) town read on yourself.Seol wrote:Random voting isn't the issue here, sometimes you don't always have a reason and if your voteisarbitrary, it's not necessary to make up a "joke reason". How much are you going to actually decide on their alignment on the end of day one based on if they gave a joke reason, or if they used dice? Personally, even if I'm scum I have not motive if I vote. I usually just pick a name I like or don't like if I don't know anyone in the game.
ect ect.Untrod Tripod (7:27:18 PM): you enjoy whoring
xcaykex (7:27:24 PM): yes
xcaykex (7:27:26 PM): i know that-

Who said end of day 1? It's relevant to theIH wrote:How much are you going to actually decide on their alignment on the end of day one based on if they gave a joke reason, or if they used dice?beginningof day 1, when you're looking for something - anything - of substance, regardless of magnitude, to kickstart discussion.
Nine times out of ten, the point that was originally raised is irrelevant to the eventual substance of a day 1 argument. That doesn't mean that original point was unimportant, or shouldn't have been raised.
You have factors which influence your decision (considerably moreso if you're scum). That alone means it's more useful than a randomly generated vote.IH wrote:Personally, even if I'm scum I have not motive if I vote. Dice-voting is absolutly pointless, since you may as well not have voted. On another forum, I "randomly" lynched one of my mafia buddies (He was an idiot and would probably give us away, but that's beside the point.) which later gave me away as mafia. Dice-voting doesn't give anything away, other than perhaps an eagerness to get the day over with./(.+)?/-

This sounds like a good idea - if we can get enough people together to lynch dice voters, then it will turn into something as commonly accepted as lynch all liars.Mr. Flay wrote:I will vote dice-voters from now on.Come play Metroplexity! Come play Unangband!-

I don't think you've been reading, and/or you have yet to grasp the subtle nuances of mafia tells and townie tells.Oman wrote:Dice voting is good.

Whats the problem? Random votes don't do shit,"When playing a game, the goal is to win, but it is the goal that is important, not the winning." -Reiner Knizia
