i feel shitty for posting this lol and it might seem like a joke but it's not. ive been playing on and off and every time i start back up i just start back from zero. i can't seem to come up with genuine stuff that I actually believe in other than "gut" to fos ppl on while some ppl who have way less exp than me seem to be able to articulate themselves way better. it's a shame i suck so bad bc i really like playing mafia lol
any tips for someone who's rusty but has a fair amt of exp?
In my personal experience, 'gut' seems to be equivalent to intuition, or the first stage of logic. It's the act of comprehending something, without fully understanding it, basically.
I would recommend taking the time to consider why you have a gutread - learning how to articulate them will not only help you communicate, it will also you help you understand your own reads better. Consider the purpose behind a person's choice of words and actions - there are usually multiple possibilities, but the more information you have, the better you can focus on which of those are most probable. It takes time and effort, but anything you want to be good at is going to take some work.
At least, this worked for me. (Though I've gotten a bit lazy in my old age about explaining my reads. >_<)

I found someone who plays like me.
I feel your pain.

I asked about gut reads in my first newbie (1807, just ended). At the time I really had no idea how to explain why I had the responses and reads I did to people, but as the game progressed I realized that there actually were rational reasons for them. I just had to pay attention to both what my gut was saying AND what was actually happening in the game...and read the strategy, tips, and tricks threads in this forum (and articles on the wiki) like the damn bible to pick up on plays this site takes for granted that I'm totally unaware of.
I'm not going to claim I'm great by any stretch of the imagination, but it has helped me pinpoint my gut reads better so thought I'd offer it.
Oh. I also noticed a significant improvement in my play when I stopped worrying about what other people thought of me It actually started with a post in 1807...I said something like I thought I'd made the wrong vote, and someone else said "What do you mean, the wrong vote? either you voted for the person you think should be lynched, or you didn't." and I had to stop and actually think about that. I realized I was still thinking in terms of "how to keep everyone else happy" instead of "how to play the game to the best of my individual capabilities."
Renaissance moment for me.
Also useful for me: Nothing in mafia is personal, and no one is judging me *as a person* inside the game. This became very clear to me when I started reading postgame interactions, and talking to people outside of games.
ETA: I might be super projecting with this post, but it really was this major turning point in my play, so...maybe will be useful for someone later on. XD

this is how i play. gut reads then look in closer detail to figure out why my gut reads are what they are
Sometimes I just feel like this player is scum/town for no apparent reason.
Maybe because of the tone or something.
I'm also not an English speaker, so explaining my gut read (especially if it's complicated and still trying to figure it out) is hard.

Of all tyrannies,a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

I endorse this product.
However, there is a different fine line between
stopped worrying
and
not addressing
. If you stay on the former, you would be a good scumhunter. Step into the latter and somehow you would be a D1 lnych.

Oh yes. There's definitely a line there. The former is anxiety and the second is playing the game. Sometimes they get mixed up in my head, but I'm getting better.

haha... funny you bring up this thread again. I don’t know, we’ll see, I haven’t played much since then and I’m just starting back up again in one Newbie game. I think I’ve gotten worse but probably just rust, I think I’ll have a better sense of how I feel about my play if I stick around for a few more games this wave.
I can relate, although it's less "starting from zero" and more "never getting off the ground at all". I just can't figure out this game of Mafia in the slightest, and I really want to, because it seems like a genuinely good game at times.
