Flayming Man (July 3rd-5th, 2009)

Post Post #0 (isolation #0) » Wed Aug 20, 2008 8:01 am

Post by Mr. Flay »

Background information
So Orbiting and I suck for not making it to Mini-Mo-Meet last weekend. Too much stuff going on, too broke, etc. Sad pandas all around.:cry:

BUT.
Instead of trying to get a weekend where we can travel out of town, what if we took the hosting 'burden' off of MeMe and her clan and had something at our place? :mrgreen:
We're thinking of May/June 2009, though that conflicts with one of the proposed months for Yos/Malyss' Beach Bash.
Kansas City, which means a closer/bigger airport than Springfield (no offense, MeMe!). Crash space would be... not ideal, but we have enough blankets and floors for people if they want to.

Flayming Man is now on the wiki
, including games that will be present and rules for behavior
(outside of games, at least)

Image
  • mith and Michelle
  • Thesp/kristocker
  • petroleumjelly (needs to be picked up at MCI Thurs. night)
  • Phoebus (flying in Thursday to Olathe, may need a ride to the house)
  • PookyTheMagicalBear
  • Fletcher, mlaker, spork76
  • MeMe and Atticus (90%)
  • Thestatusquo and Elias_the_thief (50%, and maybe w/Ether and Sens)
  • Mastermind of Sin +1 (50%, willing to split gas and help drive for anyone coming from Indiana/Ohio/Illinois/Kentucky, or the Northeast)

  • Glork? (would like to carpool from OH)
  • Alabaska J?
  • IH?
  • sam.samhorn (only if family doesn't come to town)
  • Mr_Gnome_It_All (would need a ride from the Twin Cities)
  • inHimshallibe and rajrhcpfreak? (slim chance if the stars align)

Thesp, you guys put any more thoughts into Beach Bash? If I take June, will you take August 2009?

-O- agreed with Flayming Man, and said we probably have enough expertise in setting stuff on fire to burn a Tiger in effigy, or something. ;)

Started an attendee list in the first post. At this point I'm leaning toward
June 12-14 or
June 26-28, with a day or two optional on either end. The latter set of dates might be too close to 4th of July, though.

...or would people WANT to come on the weekend of the 4th? Fireworks are illegal in KCMO, though, so it wouldn't be
much of
that sort of party.

Nothing so early as that. June 26-28, or July 3-5, are what I'm thinking right now.

Added a poll to the first post, regarding dates. We won't necessarily go with the winner, but if there's a clear preference it'll help us plan...

Isn't this the same days as Yos's beach bash?
Well, now that Beach Bash has picked its dates our most popular option is out, yes. I'm going to talk to Orbiting over lunch, but we'll probably move it a week later to the 4th of July holiday. May was out for a lot of people...

Sold! Our firebowl is only about 4' across, though... :twisted:

Date is firmly set: Friday July 3rd to Sunday July 5th
, with a bit of wiggle before and after for people with travel-time limitations. No fireworks, but plenty of games, booze for those legally able to drink, and some crash space (assuming anybody sleeps at this thing).

Right, so eating at one of the old Mafia dens in town is on the roster...burning a Tiger in effigy... what ELSE do people want to do? Given enough warning, lots of stuff can happen, but I need to know what people want besides Mafia, some board games, and enough food/crash space to keep from dying.

Got it fixed, thanks MoS.

For those who are more interested in board games, I finally finished updating our collection on BGG: http://boardgamegeek.com/collection/use ... own=1&ff=1

Hopefully another couple will be there by the time July rolls around, but those are ones you won't need to bring. :)

Cranium

Ticket to Ride: Europe is only lower on the list because you already have Ticket to Ride. I think the Europe game is way better, but I bumped Balderdash and Settlers up the list for variety.
We can probably borrow TTR:Europe from some friends, but if you want to bring it regardless, that'll simplify things. Definitely AGOT and SOC, and probably the Munchkin expansion. Don't bother with Balderdash - we have it.

Ye gods Thesp - 436 games?!? The ones that jump out to me are Railroad Tycoon, Khet in any form, The Great Dalmuti (or Tichu), Scotland Yard and Hoity Toity. If you want to bring classic Stratego too that might be good, all we have is the Transformers edition. Cthulhu Rising and the Arkham Horror set might be good too... that's just the stuff you've rated 8 or higher, though. ;)

I/we are fine with you staying a bit early or late if it makes more sense for your flights, peej. You may have to leave the housewhen we do on Monday morning and bum around town a while, though, assuming we end up going to work (the jury is still out on that).

Just a little over a month to go. If some of the people with question marks/percentages in the first post can firm up whether or not they are coming, that that would most excellent.

We're planning on making floor space available for those who don't want hotels, and can probably even put up the tent in the back yard if you don't mind the dogs snuffling at your door at 7AM. Also, it's bloody hot here in July so sleeping outside is not for the faint of heart. I figure most people will be floor-crashing, when they sleep at all. :)

Foodwise, we've got a couple of excellent local restaurants we like to take people to (sushi, pub-style, and pizza in particular), and were otherwise planning on doing pizza and sandwich fixings, maybe ordering in. We haven't hosted a meetup for this many people before so let me know if you'd rather roll a different way... I'm not planning on any outings to Worlds of Fun (local amusement park) or other 'tourist traps' unless people pipe up!

The tiger for burning in effigy is already being planned. ;)

No problem at all. We'll plan to have somebody there with a PEEJ sign to pick you up. PM me what airline and flight, if you don't mind. We may be a few minutes late, depending on how long it takes to get to the airport from work. Might be closer to 6.

No wrenches at all! That's great news... I figure the Springfield Mob is necessary to a healthy fest at this point. :) Just helps us plan how much space/food to have on hand...

Also, the first stage of the Tiger In Effigy project is complete, for those who were wavering on whether or not to come:

Yes I do. Also my friends with the Ticket to Ride set will be bringing/loaning theirs, so nobody needs to bring that if they're cramped for space.

Glad to hear it. The near-definite guest list is in the first post above the break, I've just PM'ed most of those below the break to see what their actual chances are like now.
sam.samhorn wrote:PS: I don't know if these games have been mentioned, but I can bring Risk, Intrigue, and Bang!, assuming I'm able to make it.
I've got Bang! and both the original and LOTR editions of RISK. http://boardgamegeek.com/collection/use ... own=1&ff=1 for a more complete list... plus as I said friends are bringing TTR (America, Europe, and... Switzlerland, I think) and someone's got a copy of
Are You A Follower of Cthulhu
that we might try out (several local friends who don't play Mafia yet will be stopping by at least part of the time).

If you want to bring some, MoS, that'd be great. I have no idea what it is but the stuff is legendary by now...

PJ: We've got Almond Roca in this part of the world, but don't let that stop you. Actually, if you can bring something from Pike Place Market that might be even better... but whatever, it's all good. :)

No, although we used to and there's still some former hairs lying around. The house is mostly hardwood though so there shouldn't be much dander left after almost two years. Bring your pills, but I don't expect it'll be a big problem.

Speaking of which, is anybody who's coming have dietary restrictions (veg*, no dairy, etc)? We're planning on eating on the cheap (CostCo, here we come) except when/if we decide to go out, but we can accommodate most things if we know ahead of time.

Besides PJ, Phoebus, and Pooky, is anybody else flying in and going to need a ride? I've got Pooky flying in Friday morning so if there will be other arrivals around 9AM, we can wait for you... we're picking up PJ Thursday night, and Phoebus has made other arrangements, at least for arriving.

Here's a tentative schedule of meals, by the way:[mrow][col]
Breakfast
[col]
Lunch
[col]
Dinner
Friday
[col]Continental-ish (cereal, milk, fruit, coffee)[col]Burgers, brats, stuffed mushroom caps, salad[col]Dinner out (Waldo Pizza, 75th Street Brewery, or Sushi Haru probably)
Saturday
[col]Flay's Short Order Cafe (bacon, eggs, waffles or pancakes, fruit, coffee, milk, etc)[col]Pizza/Chinese?[col]Pork-and-peppers taco bar, black beans, rice, and perhaps plantains
Sunday
[col]Bagels, cream cheese, coffee, milk, fruit, etc[col]More coffee, and leftovers[col]Helifino...

Also, since MoS and sam.samhorn are probably not going to be able to come anymore, is anyone wanting to add these to what they're bringing? I've taken them off the list on the wiki...
* Coloretto
* Cranium Hoopla
* A Game of Thrones
* Intrigue
* Illuminati
* Mu and Mehr
* Munchkin: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
* Risk: Godstorm
* The Settlers of Catan + Expansions
I'm certain we have plenty, I just didn't know if we'd dropped some duplicates and would miss them now that some people's ability to come has changed.

Thesp, if you've got room, Orbiting would probably like A Game of Thrones, which I see is in your collection. I don't know much about the rest, though Illuminati is good for when you're stupid-tired (or drunk) and we've got several RISKs already.

Changed the night we're planning on eating out because my stupid brain forgot that going out to eat on the
4th of July
is not really feasible, especially with this size of group. So we'll go Friday instead,
unless someone is expecting to arrive at the house Friday around dinner time
. Then we'll have to either leave you a note or reschedule, or some third thing...

Also, I'm planning on putting up a whiteboard for people to record game victories on; the person with the most victories by sundown Saturday gets the honor of lighting up the tiger! :twisted:

PJ's here, Phoebus landed yesterday and will join us later today. Pooky should be in the air, I'm going up to the airport to get him momentarily...

First game of the meet, last night: Ticket to Ride. I lucked out on routes and racked up six, scoring about 156 total for the win.

Starting to wind down, finally. Everyone was asleep at the same time for an hour or so.

Tiger burning was a success, eventually (who knew papier-mâché was so non-flammable?). Pictures of our efforts and the results soon, once we're actually done.

Me!

It was a pleasure to host everybody, even if it was mostly on the floors (for those who slept at all), and you guys were NO trouble at all. My only regret is that we massively overbought for food (forgetting that gamers generally prefer to snack rather than sit-down-and-eat), so we're having tacos and eggs for the next week. :mrgreen:

Since LJ isn't wanting to let me post the resized pictures here and I can't get into mith's FTP site for right now, look here for most of my pictures: http://pics.livejournal.com/triadruid/gallery/0001kf4w

I haven't done anything yet with the video of us trying to get the *&%&#^@# tiger lit. Maybe I'll upload it to YouTube sometime...
