No, a Mason Pair would make endgame very swingy. I don't think a game that size should have them, as it again detracts from the actual point of the game, hunting scummy behavior. Winning through mod confirmation is less fun/educational for anyone.

No Masons - they are way too strong and give rise to reductionist strategies.

1) 2 Goons, 7 Townies
2) Doc, 2 Goons, 6 Townies
3) Cop, 2 Goons, 6 Townies
4) Cop, Doc, 2 Goons, 6 Townies
5) Cop, Godfather, Goon, 6 Townies
6) Cop, Doc, Godfather, Goon, 5 Townies

Okay, it adds more Variance into the Set up and complicates it somewhat. Plus, this tells the Scum that if a Godfather is present, a Cop is also present. I think it's good, but I don't know about what you think.

How did the C9-Setup come to it*'s name? I know that there is a story, but it was not availible on the wiki last time I checked.

I propose the following for newbie games:

2 Mafia
up to 2 power roles
5-7 townies

The power roles have a 50% chance of existing (so 25% chance of 2 power roles) and a 50% chance of being a cop or a doc. If there are 2 of the same power role, one will be insane.

C9 is hexadecimal for the different possibilities, if you expressed them in binary: 11 00 10 01 (both, neither, one, the other)

Dr.Doom:

In a C9 game, possible setups are:

Cop & Doc (11)
Only Cop (10)
Only Doc (01)
Neither Cop nor Doc (00)

So, that makes it 11100100. If you convert that from binary to hexadecimal system, we get the number C9, which is where the name comes from.

One of the charms of seven-player newbie games is that they're short. Get stuck with someone who's halfhearted, it's for 3 gamedays max...

I think we really need to consider the PURPOSE of ICs rather than the qualifications. What ICs are there for and SHOULD do is just as important as how we select them.

I honestly think ICs are just there to play. People will probably disagree, but everyone has their own style of play. More experienced players bring up things like L-1 or LyLo because they're playing the game, instead of it being their purpose. Otherwise we'd need some handbook on what to say for every situation - just playing provides the best education, in my opinion, because even ICs can learn from Newbie games.

Yeah, when I play as an IC
(which is vanishingly rare anymore, it seems)
I'm just another player, unless someone's asking questions about game mechanics/theory/acronyms. I don't expect deference because I'm an IC, and I attack it when I see it proposed by either newbies
or
ICs. I'm able to provide more cogent arguments at times, and I know more strategy that can become useful in the endgame, but otherwise, I'm just like anybody there.

I'm a little curious to see how a game I recently filled out with two players that were -not-quite-ICs turns out. Both had four completed games and several running at that moment, which made me comfortable with bending the rules just a smidge.

Personally, I believe IC's are more then just another player. If you place IC's in a game with newbies, you are effectively saying "This is an experienced player, you can learn playing this game from him (or her, naturally)". To me, this implies that ideally, IC's have those qualities we would like to see most in newbies: not flaking, fun to play with, and a good grasp of the game rules come to mind.

Seeing how the current newbie queue is desperate for IC's though, additional requirements (or other, but stricter requirements) seem to be pretty difficult to implement.

Oh. When I signed up as an IC earlier I thought we were meant to get a bunch of newbie followers and incite a rebellion or something.

My mistake.
