weird seven demensional crumbing strategies
I've heard that some people will crumb by "having every third letter of a sentence spell their role backwards" is this true? What the heck goes on and how do people even manage to do this stuffMY PRONOUNS ARE THEY/THEM
do not assume my posts follow coherency they do not imagine that every time i post i put half of my knowledge into a clone and then the clone murders me-

The reason Datisi probably doesn't have five is because it'd be tedious, that's what makes crumbs work.
Mason crumbs are a very special case because you can explain your crumb in the PT to your Mason partner. You should always essentially be granting Activatable IC to your Mason partner when you die if you take the moment to crumb."Let us say that you are right and there are two worlds. How much, then, is this 'other world' worth to you? What do you have there that you do not have here? Money? Power? Something worth causing the prince so much pain for?'"
"Well, I..."
"What? Nothing? You would make the prince suffer over... nothing?"-

True, but imo the whole point of a crumb is that nobody notices it (otherwise it would be a soft claim)
But at the very least it proves that I didn't come up with the claim right on the spot. Which, for semi-open games like newbies might not prove *too* much (since known setup and scum generally knows which fakeclaim is best), but for closed setups, proving that you had a claim that fits with the rest of the claims/flips can go a long way
And cramming 5-6 different crumbs in your posts at the start of the game would be very very difficult - i generally barely manage 1
Pedit: yeah, it's tedious as hell. Also +1 to the Mason explanation.I will straight up disregard all reason if you have a PR dream again. You can come back and be like, “I dreamt that Locke is a N2 Bulletproof Multitasking Cop and Self-Targeting Doctor,” and I will go, “Okay, Locke kill it is then.”~M-

Honestly this is stegonograohy and definitely falls under the category of encryption. There's a hidden message and you need to know a secret to get the plaintext from the ciphertextMY PRONOUNS ARE THEY/THEM

welp, no mod ever warned me about breaking the "no encryption" rule, and those 3 games had 3 different moderators, sooooooo ¯\_(ツ)_/¯I will straight up disregard all reason if you have a PR dream again. I'm not a crypto expert by any means but I have a vauge idea of how RSA works *waves hands while babbling about torsions and factoring the product of large primes* and I think that this definitely could be considered cryptoMY PRONOUNS ARE THEY/THEM

This. Adel tried to use that exact strategy repeatedly in around 2009 or something. In post 14, Awoo wrote:I thought it was to prevent everyone's first post from being "S%UsGJzqiYAqMADb4g7180^*CQ0ov@1WxdDuEG0kNfaTOxL!VXzv0$ffTpvkggkH^tsBv73kdxW1UyHeXThQFvHqtYTFsQ2BYEb", then when it's time to claim they post their private key and it decrypts into "Vanilla Townie"-

I always crumb with some kind of obscure pop culture reference or something instead of letter patterns.
I kind of agree with bugspray that maybe the tolerance of "here's which letters are significant" crumbs isn't really unified or consistent with the rule against cryptography.
I feel like I could always find an obscure enough pop culture reference to manage the same thing, with a little more work though. In a sense explaining what I'm referencing is "decrypting". So the thing you would have to ban is "explaining your crumbs?"
The big difference between this Adel anecdote I hadn't heard of before and both Datisi and my crumbs is that Adel's method/mandate restricts one to a single claim by pointing out the one post containing it. Both his and mine would have risk of scum cracking them if I pointed out the exact post and then for that reason I have an excuse to make seven of them littered through several posts if I wanted to as scum.
Smalltowns and all VT opens are great people by the way."Let us say that you are right and there are two worlds. How much, then, is this 'other world' worth to you? What do you have there that you do not have here? Money? Power? Something worth causing the prince so much pain for?'"

i think the idea as to why adel's cryptography strategy is a rule violation while an obscure reference isn't is that presumably when adel wishes to decrypt her role she provides some kind of key and then anyone can confirm that the original message decrypts to what she says it does, whereas a pop culture reference can plausibly have created after the fact and doesn'tprovably"decrypt" to what you might say it does.
or, to put it another way, encrypting your role in your first post is completely uncrackable and is provable as your sole intention, whereas crumbing can (theoretically) be seen by scum and cannot be proven to be a) what you originally meant or b) the sole role that you've crumbed.
with that in mind, if cryptography weren't banned then what adel did would basically become the optimal strategy in every single game and anyone who didn't do it would probably either be scum or playing to future win conditions. arguably, it creates a worse game. crumbing being allowed doesn't necessarily make it the best strategy for every person in every single game (unless you're weird like Almost50 and you crumb being VT), nor would i argue that it ruins or even negatively impacts games because of its being allowed.-

although i wonder how easy it would be to crack someone's role if you knew what you were searching for? like, if you knew that they crumbed one out of "vanilla townie, VT, villager" and other such roles and you had that limited to some kind of small list, would that make it easy to crack what they were saying? (if they encrypted their role with cryptography, i mean. not crumbed)
i'm not sure.
(as a side note, i once included Adel as a PR that was allowed to use encryption in a game i modded. nothing that interesting came out of it)Last edited by northsidegal on Sun Feb 23, 2020 3:12 pm, edited 1 time in total.-

what makes this fundamentally different from cryptography except that it's just not as deliberate as that?
unless you're really lazy about it, crumbing seems just like what adele did except the code is your posts and the private key is the pattern you highlight when it's time to claimYou can't step in the same river twice.-
