Newbie 1060: It's a Murder Mystery (Game Over)

There were only nine guests present for the murder mystery dinner, but it didn't deter anyone from making it as fun an event as possible. The two people hosting the dinner stood on the stage, set the mood, and introduced the scenario while the nine people below followed along in their programs. It wasn't much of a surprise to any of them when the lights went out and a blood-curdling shriek came from the back of the room, or when they heard the cracking and thudding of a "corpse" being hastily hidden away.

What they didn't expect was the sound of a gunshot.

When the lights came back on, the guests were left with a grisly scene: Two people, hired to fake murders for others' amusement, lay dead and bloody on the stage. A quick inspection of the crime scene revealed that one was strangled to death while the other was shot. A search of the room revealed no hidden passages, no weapons, no sneaky ninjas, nothing.

...except the frightening revelation that there were two killers among them.

General

3. Unless otherwise specified in your role PM or by me, you may not communicate outside of this thread while the game is running. If someone contacts you outside of the game, please let me know immediately!
   
4. Do not quote any private communication to which you have access. This includes game-related PMs and QuickTopics. Paraphrasing is okay.
5. If it is not visible to the naked eye, do not post it. This includes, but is not limited to: invisible text, tiny text, encrypted text, and text hidden within tags. Spoiler text, however, is allowed, as long as it is used within reason. For cases of breadcrumbing where you aren't sure, please PM me beforehand.
6. If you have the ability to edit your posts, don't use it in my game.

Activity

1. You should aim for at least one post per 48 hours to keep the game moving.
2. Prods will be issued to players if they have not posted within a 72-hour period. I will also prod on request as long as at least 48 hours have passed since the player's last post.
3. A player who has been prodded has 48 hours to respond to the prod. If I do not receive a response, I will seek a replacement. If the player responds and is still interested in playing, and I have not yet found a replacement, the player may continue to play.
4. Players who have been prodded 3 times are subject to replacement without further notice. Player-requested prods do not count toward this total.
5. If you anticipate being away for at least 48 hours, please PM me or post a V/LA notice in the thread with the expected date of your return.

Day

1. Days have a fixed duration of 3 weeks. Deadline extensions will be granted only in extreme circumstances.
2. Lynches occur through simple majority (50% of living players + 1, rounded down). If no majority is reached at deadline or there is a majority of votes for No Lynch, the day will end without a lynch.
3. Votes must be on a separate line, flushed left, and bolded (e.g.,
   Vote: Equinox
   ). The same applies to vote revocations (e.g.,
   Unvote
   ). Unvotes are preferred but not necessary when switching votes (e.g.,
   Unvote, Vote: Equinox
   ). Use of the vote tags (e.g., VOTE: Equinox) is optional.
4. Once majority is reached, no further votes or unvotes will count.
5. All players, including the lynched player, are allowed to discuss in twilight phase until I post the death scene.
6. Dead players may make one "Bah!" post that contains no game-related content.

Night

1. Nights will last 72 hours.
2. If I do not receive your action by deadline, your action is forfeited. You may submit ahead of time; you can also make as many changes as necessary, and at deadline I will take the last action you submitted.
3. For
   all
   replacements that take place during this phase, I will extend deadline by 24 hours.

Moderator Actions

1. Flavor is for entertainment purposes only and has no significance in the game.
2. Vote counts will be posted once per page or once per 24 hours, depending on activity level.

At first, it was just bickering. The pointing and shouting that went on in the ballroom would have made any random passerby wonder if they weren't playing a game of Mafia or something. The nine guests paid no heed to the fact that two among them were carrying weapons of possibly mass destruction; they were too busy trying to argue that they were not the droids everyone else was looking for. The tension was so high that nobody noticed how cold the place had gotten in the hours that the air conditioning was left unchecked.

Well, someone was about to notice.

For the first time since the discovery of the crime, the guests went quiet, and all eyes turned to one figure in particular among them. snowjorden's eyes went from one face to the next, searching for the reason behind the suspicion. When he couldn't discern it, he laughed nervously.

"It's gotten a bit quiet, hasn't it, guys?"

Silence. snowjorden shifted his weight a little.

Immediately, the mob pounced upon him. Five of the guests grabbed him while the other three stood, looking dazed, as snowjorden was led to the stage by the corpses left there for display. They looked around them for something with which they could hit snowjorden, but they failed to find anything. Instead, they grabbed a spare but bloody rope from one of the bodies beside them and fashioned a noose. Without a place from which they could hang a noose, they strangled snowjorden instead.

A gun fell from one of snowjorden's suit pockets.

In the distance, a shadowy figure made its way through the rose bushes, running frantically from an unseen pursuer. The sounds of its footsteps masked the soft pattering of the rain. Rain almost never fell in this garden, but the runner had no luxury to ponder this. Over the sound of her panting and rustling, Lady Lambdadelta could hear the sounds of wooshing behind her. The Siestas' arrows were following her. She knew they had a certain deadly accuracy, and if she didn't find a way to stop them, they would engulf and incinerate her. It did not matter that she was the Witch of Certainty in a realm high above. Here, she was a mortal, a piece placed by someone controlling the game board. Even as a piece, however, she did not want to die.

Around and around she ran, following the walls of the labyrinth in vain hope of escape. She cursed her low visibility; on the best of days, the inhabitants of the island would have had some trouble with the maze, yet here she was trying to get out in the dead of night. She stretched her hand out to feel her way through this section of the maze, and then she was met by thorns. Dead end. Lady Lambdadelta spun around to run back, but her return route was a dead end. Golden threads, weaving themselves through the walls of the rose bushes, aimed at their target. It was then that she realized that her loss in this game had been a certainty from the very beginning. The arrows did not stop. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and --

...woke up screaming in the middle of the ballroom. "Nightmare, nightmare, it was only a nightmare," she thought to herself. She closed her eyes and tried to calm herself down. She looked around and saw that everyone else was still asleep at their tables. Nothing seemed amiss. She thought back to the previous afternoon, where, together with the other members of their impromptu lynch mob, she had taken out snowjorden. She'd figured that he was one of the murderers, but she was still a little surprised when she saw the gun.

The gun! They had forgotten to take the gun from snowjorden. Lady Lambdadelta stood up and ran toward the stage. She had to make sure it was still there, and they needed to figure out a way to hold onto it lest someone else got killed. However, she didn't need to walk very far to see that the spot by snowjorden's body was... empty.

"I couldn't just leave it there," came a voice from behind her. "It still had a couple of shots in it. It would've been wasteful to not use them."

Lady Lambdadelta recognized the voice, but what good did that knowledge do when she wasn't able to disseminate it? In a flash, before she could scream, her attacker's hands clamped over her mouth. She attempted to struggle out of the attacker's hold on her but to no avail. She was pushed into the wall and pinned there. There was no way out now. She took a long, hard look at the face of the one holding her.

"Sweet dreams."

With that, Lady Lambdadelta was welcomed into the Golden Land. It's okay. You'll see her again soon. I can guarantee that.

The seven of them tore the place apart, searching for any evidence left behind by Lady Lambdadelta's killer. Nothing was left unturned; they looked into every nook and cranny that human hands could reach, and they did not rest until they all agreed that the killer had successfully covered his or her own tracks. The mafia was still one of them. Since yesterday's lynching had been such a smashing success, they decided to try again. There really wasn't much else they could do, anyway; they could hardly call the authorities. It should have occurred to them to call the cops yesterday as soon as the first couple of bodies fell, but it was too late to regret their decision now.

In preparation for the day's witch hunt, everyone cleaned up the ballroom. All of the tables that were upturned in their morning search were righted again, and the four rotting bodies on the stage were shoved into a space underneath, where they hoped the smell wouldn't bother them. They couldn't do anything about the dried blood, so instead they took one of the tablecloths and placed it on the stage floor like a decorative rug.

Of course, the scene was not complete without a mock gallows. As one of the guests climbed on one of the tables to tie the noose to a hook in the ceiling, the guest tripped and fell, hitting the floor head-first. Immediately, the medical professional among them, mb53, rushed over to see the guest. Fortunately, the guest sustained only a head bump, and the doctor prescribed rest for the patient. He noticed a small cut in the guest's head, however, and he searched among his pockets for a spare bandage.

That was when one of the more paranoid guests noticed something glimmering in mb53's coat pocket. When this guest reached over to grab it, mb53 dodged and then moved the object to an inner pocket, out of everyone's sight. This move raised a few suspicions.

There was no need to ask what it was. There could only be one answer, one that was found in an event of violence that was even quicker than the previous afternoon's. mb53 was never allowed a moment to protest his innocence. The last thing the dying doctor heard were screams of "Kill the mafia! Kill the mafia!"

When everyone calmed down, someone searched mb53's inner pockets. Out came... a locket with a picture of mb53 and a young woman. It wasn't a gun after all.

In order to successfully prosecute criminals, one must have evidence.

Voidedmafia was underneath the floor of the stage, examining the five bodies. Unlike the others, he did not believe that all of the killer's tracks had been covered. After all, the so-called "perfect crime" was but a myth. As long as there was evidence that still needed to be investigated, Voidedmafia was going to search through it all until he revealed the truth, even if it meant he would be spending the entire night cooped up under the floor breathing the smell of mold and blood.

With that in mind, he thoroughly searched snowjorden, hoping to find some sort of identification that would tie snowjorden to his partner. Pocket after pocket after pocket revealed nothing of import. Voidedmafia thought it was interesting that he couldn't find snowjorden's wallet anywhere; snowjorden's partner must have gotten to it during the chaos of the lynch on the first day, just like the gun.

Voidedmafia returned snowjorden to his place in the corner and paused for a moment. He recalled the evening of the dinner when one of the hosts had been shot while the other was strangled. snowjorden dropped his gun when the lynch mob killed him a couple of days ago, which meant that the other death was most likely due to his partner. It seemed a bit odd that the two of them carried only a single gun between them, but so far, there was no evidence to suggest otherwise. For all Voidedmafia knew, Lady Lambdadelta could have been killed with snowjorden's gun. Still, it was all so strange...

Up above, someone else was wandering the ballroom. It didn't take too long to notice the loose floorboard on the stage or the soft light of a flashlight. A quick body count revealed only four sleeping guests, each at a different table and facing each other. Another night of clean-up duty, then.

Deep in thought, Voidedmafia did not hear the noise outside. He was close to the answer. He knew he was close to the answer; everything was there, laid out before him...

Suddenly, the answer came to him. Quite literally.

The ballroom was illuminated by the bright rays of the sun. The five of them could hear the birds chirping outside. It was a fresh, new morning.

A fresh, new morning that was quickly interrupted by an announcement that would change life as they all knew it.

Primate dramatically pointed his finger at Sarg338 and proclaimed, "I saw Sarg338 sneak underneath the stage where we found Voidedmafia's body! I know he killed him!"

Just as quickly as yesterday, the lynch-happy mob flexed their muscles and advanced towards Sarg338. Otolia tried to reason with the group, but it was useless. Like zombies, they all had the taste of blood, and now they thirsted.

They were mildly surprised when Sarg338 spoke.

"Here, let me make this easy for you guys."

Sarg338 took out his gun and shot himself in the head.

The four of them felt deep joy at their success. They had worked hard together for the past three days to find the mafia scum, and they had done it. There was a certain feeling of sadness that they were not joined by their fallen comrades... but they knew they would eventually see everyone again.
