Open 318: By Nomination Only (Game Over)

[Equinox]

Eleven contestants, chosen for their intellectual and oratory abilities, were given the chance to win a fabulous $1 million cash prize, split among the winners. Among these contestants were three studio employees, carefully hand-picked for their deceptive skills. Their objective was to maintain the studio's financial interests by forcing all of the contestants to become ineligible to win. Therefore, the challenge for the contestants was clear: They were to find and eliminate these confederates.

At the end of each episode, the contestants would be given a chance to vote one player out of the game. There was, however, a caveat; every other episode, the studio would nominate three contestants, and the contestants would only be allowed to eliminate one of those three players. Would the studio play it safe and choose three honest contestants, ensuring the survival of their moles? Or would they raise the stakes by allowing one of their own to be sacrificed?

It was to be the televised reality show of the season. After all, this was... "By Nomination Only."

General

3. Unless otherwise specified in your role PM or by me, you may not communicate outside of this thread while the game is running.
4. Do not quote or post any screen captures of any private communication to which you have access. This includes game-related PMs, QuickTopics, and instant messaging logs. Paraphrasing is okay.
5. If it is not visible to the naked eye, do not post it. This includes, but is not limited to: invisible text, tiny text, encrypted text, and text hidden within tags. Spoiler text, however, is allowed, as long as it is used within reason.
6. If you have the ability to edit your posts, don't use it in my game.
7. Regular

Activity

1. Prods will be issued to players if they have not posted within a 48-hour period. Players who have been prodded have 24 hours to respond

3. If you anticipate being away for at least 48 hours, please PM me or post a V/LA notice in the thread with the expected date of your return.

Day

1. Days will have a fixed deadline of 14 real-time days. Deadline extensions will be granted only in extreme circumstances.
2. Lynches are decided in one of two ways: If there is a simple majority before the deadline, a lynch will occur and the game will change phase; however, if deadline hits, the lynch will occur by plurality vote (i.e., the player with the most votes will be lynched). In the event of a tie, the player who reached his/her current amount of votes first will be lynched. Please refer to the Setup post for more information about lynching mechanics in this game.
3. Once majority is reached, no further votes or unvotes will count.
4. Votes must be on a separate line, flushed left, and bolded (e.g.,
   Vote: Equinox
   ). The same applies to vote revocations (e.g.,
   Unvote
   ). Unvotes are preferred but not necessary when switching votes (e.g.,
   Unvote, Vote: Equinox
   ). Use of the vote tags (e.g., VOTE: Equinox) is optional. Abbreviations are okay as long as it's clear for whom the vote is made.
5. If I think it's a vote, it is a vote.
6. All players, including the lynched player, are allowed to discuss in twilight phase until I post the death scene.
7. Dead players may make one "Bah!" post that contains no game-related content.

Night

1. There will be no night phase in this game.
2. Players who have a night action to submit must send it in before I lock the thread between day phases. I accept provisional actions up until the end of the day, at which time I will use the last action submitted.

Moderator Actions

1. Flavor is for entertainment purposes only and has no significance in the game.
2. If there is an error in the vote count or something similar, bold your concern in the thread. Please PM me for all other issues.
3. Violations of these rules will result in consequences. Pretending to violate these rules will also result in consequences. What those consequences are depend on the severity of the action and on the game state.

Setup

This game is using the Nomination Mafia mechanic proposed by Hoopla. The following rules are in place:

• This game is vanilla and nightless.
• On odd-numbered days, normal lynching mechanics apply.
• On even-numbered days, the nomination mechanic comes into play. At the start of the day, the mafia get to select any three players (including themselves) to be available for lynch. I will announce who the nominated players are for that day, and votes may only go on one of the three nominated players.
• The mafia are allowed to talk during the day.
• A player must be lynched each day; "No Lynch" is not an option. Please refer to the Rules post for information about lynching.

On the stage, the eleven contestants appeared to be in the midst of a very heated argument. The drama that ensued would have been enough for most reality shows on prime-time television, but this show promised much more. The surrounding audience members were enraptured by the scene before them. What could possibly be even more entertaining than this? The advertisement displayed on the screens above the stage gave them only a vague hint as to what was coming. Of course, the big wigs up at the studios knew full well what was going on, but they enjoyed watching the game unfold nonetheless.

The contestants were close to a decision now. Most of them were locked into a dichotomous dilemma: Who was the most likely mole, Amrun or Papa Zito? The vote tallies shifted so often over the course of the argument that even the most foolish of gamblers would hesitate to make a bet on who would be dismissed this phase. Eventually, however, it became clear who the contestants would be voting out of the game. As the votes piled on Amrun, she smiled ruefully. She knew she would have a rough time, but she never expected to be the first to go.

Papa Zito pointed his finger at Amrun, triggering a loud buzzing sound from above them. The last vote had fallen. Far to Amrun's right, the double doors leading out of the room opened, signaling her time to leave. Without another word, Amrun departed. When the doors closed, the light above the door shone a brilliant green.

Scum hunting is a little like gymnastics.

It takes only one small thing to go wrong -- jumping at the wrong angle, leaning just a little too far to one side, or losing even one moment of concentration -- for one to botch the routine. Hoopla had always maintained this philosophy, and she made sure to bring it with her to the stage tonight. Like all the other nights, she would keep a level head and focus on her task of finding the moles among the ten remaining contestants.

Unfortunately, this was no ordinary night. Tonight, they were restricted to voting for one of only three contestants, a move meant to test the wits of both sides alike. Everyone found their arguments frustrated by the constant question of how the three names were chosen and how they believed the studio would react to the behavior of the contestants the previous day. They took so long to deliberate that, whilst in the middle of wondering who was the best person to eliminate, they were interrupted by a loud buzzing noise signaling their deadline.

There wasn't even a majority decision. Hoopla sighed. How did they expect to find the scum if they were going to be this indecisive? There was no point in wondering that now... In a way, Hoopla was glad that she was leaving. That gave the rest of the contestants a fighting chance; at least they would not be worrying about her loyalties at a more critical point in the game. She hoped that they would pay heed to her words later, and she turned towards the back of the building.

Papa Zito wrung his hands and sighed deeply. Things were not going well for him. Ever since the debacle that was Hoopla's lynch -- no, perhaps even before then -- people had been suspicious of him. "He's too quiet," they said. There was no lack of trying on his part; he spoke up when he felt it would best serve his interests, but somehow it kept making things worse. He looked around the stage. The other contestants were busy talking amongst themselves about something or other, but Papa Zito couldn't help but feel suffocated by the pressure they were exerting upon him. It was worse when he made eye contact with them. In those eyes, boring deep into his soul, he could see red boxing gloves with his name written on them.

Would somebody please think of the Papa Zitos?

Because here, on this accursed stage where his loyalties had been decided by a cruel roll of the dice, nobody would think of this Papa Zito. It was a while before the game phase was scheduled to hit deadline, but Papa Zito thought he heard a buzzing sound in the distance. When he turned to look at the doors behind the audience seating, he could see that the light above them shone red. At least he could go see Hoopla now. He waved as he departed, silently hoping that his partners would be able to win this for him.

They set to the task of unraveling the nature of the list they had been given for this phase, and their judgment came swifter than it had ever before. zMuffinMan, who'd been quiet since before the votes on Papa Zito were falling, was staring into space.

, they asked him and each other, but he gave no response. Neither did he stir when they dropped their votes one after the other, soon reaching the required majority to send him out. They figured that zMuffinMan was an honest man, but it was better that zMuffinMan left now before anything funny happened.

They heard the familiar buzz, and the light above the doors was green. They had to push zMuffinMan off the stage before he would move again, and when he did move, he simply left through the double doors without so much as a glance back.

The day started with competing votes. Sure, there were questions about the loyalties of a few other contestants in the ring, but Fenchurch knew that there really was no question about how the day was going to play out: Either she or BBmolla would be sent through the double doors today. Fenchurch hoped that it wouldn't be her, but there was no telling with this group. They'd eliminated zMuffinMan without so much as a second glance at him. They could just as easily move off BBmolla and then get rid of her. Most of them had half a mind to do it, anyway. Fenchurch wondered if she should vote BBmolla, but she didn't know what to think of him.

The other contestants made up their minds faster than she did. Rather than wait for BBmolla, they decided that they should rid themselves of Fenchurch first. Her behavior around Papa Zito was strange, they said. Fenchurch pleaded her case, but it was no use. The contestants decided that they had time to spare, and if they were wrong about Fenchurch, they had more chances to hit correctly. Fenchurch cursed as she heard a buzz from above her. It wasn't because she was unable to solve the puzzle of who was what in the game; she'd known the solution all along.

The dancing of words below wasn't of much interest to them; after all, the contestants had already made their decision in quiet unison when the list of nominated players were announced. There wasn't much for malpascp to do. As far as the other contestants were concerned, they were ready to end the game, and malpascp was just another obstacle.

Soon enough, the buzz sounded for the sixth time. malpascp heard loud gasping from the audience. Had he really been that big of a question mark? He wondered how many of them had lost their bets. Still, he was relieved to be out of the game, and he had faith in his fellow contestants to continue in his stead. He walked off the stage and toward the green light shining before him.

Quilford looked quizzically at the closing doors. "Wait. It's not over yet?" he asked the others. They shook their heads in response. As if to mock him, the lights above the stage moved dramatically from the door to the place where he stood, and he heard some of the audience members laugh.

. Despite having had his heart set on the death of BBmolla some days ago, he feared the consequences of rash voting, and he hesitated for a moment. It would be best to take this day slowly, and he was about to say as much when he was overruled by Rory the Roman.

Rory the Roman felt that glorious sense of validation when he saw BBmolla twitch following his vote. The puzzle pieces had fallen into place soon after Papa Zito's departure; Fenchurch had been too hesitant, and BBmolla had not been aggressive enough. This had to be the solution. Nothing else fit nearly as well. Rory the Roman had no idea what VitaminR was doing over in the corner by himself, but they didn't need VitaminR's support, at least not for this round. BBmolla was a marked man.

Twistedspoon glanced over at Quilford. He was reasonably sure that Quilford was honest, yet he found Quilford's behavior a little odd for someone so certain about BBmolla. What was he doing, anyway? From what Twistedspoon could tell, he was doing some sort of complicated mental arithmetic. It didn't matter; if they were wrong about BBmolla, they could argue about it later. There wasn't much for them to do now, not with the question of BBmolla hanging above their heads. Twistedspoon didn't mind having some more excitement in this game. He dropped his vote on BBmolla-

"WAIT!"

Rory the Roman and Twistedspoon turned to face Quilford, who was pointing at the ballot box with a crazed expression on his face. They looked at each other and shrugged. Whatever Quilford had to say, it was too late to say it. Twistedspoon lifted his sunglasses just in time for the light above the door to shine. Cool was not yet dead.

BBmolla smirked. Twistedspoon can be as cool as he likes. It had been a hard fight, every single minute of it, but BBmolla felt that he'd derived so much satisfaction from it. He didn't need to say anything; the light above the doors in the distance said enough about him. When the audience erupted in cheer, he applauded with them, glad that it was over and happy that he'd had the opportunity to match wits with his opponents.
