Fate/Grand Order: Mafia in the Lostbelt

This setup is a semi-Upick for 14 anonymous players and will feature 4 mafia- and 10 town-aligned players. Please read the additional details of the setup below.

Setup generation

There are 14 classes in Fate Grand Order. Each player will be assigned a random class from the list:

Once the game has filled and everyone has been assigned a class, players will receive a PM with a username and password to their alternate account. This account's name will match the class name that player has been assigned. Players will have a PM from me in their new account containing a list of every possible character from their class that they may choose from. Some are historic figures, some are from mythology, some are from religions of the world, and some are unique to the game. Once all accounts are out and access has been verified, players will have 24 hours to choose. If you wish to have a randomized pick, or if you fail to respond, one will be drawn at random for you.

Once 24 hours have passed from the end of the pick phase, the final setup will be completed. This final setup phase will take no longer than 48 hours. Alignment is randomly assigned BEFORE players have selected their servant but will be revealed to players upon receipt of their role PM. Once we have a at least 11 confirmations, the Master Selection Phase will begin.

General Rules

1. We don’t tolerate ad hom wars. If your posting is merely insulting a player without providing game content, you can expect a strike from us. Three strikes, you’re out. We are fairly lenient about this, but posting “Fuck you” over and over again is simply not acceptable. Severe issues will be reported to the list mod(s).
2. If we say it violates these rules, it does. You can take it up with us postgame if you wish.
3. Play towards your win condition. Gambits are fine, directly harming your own team is not.
4. Once an elimination is reached, you may continue discussion until we lock the thread. No votes or unvotes will count after an elimination has been achieved.
5. An elimination is achieved as a majority of players voting for somebody. Half is not a majority.
6. Do not quote or pretend to quote any information you get from us via PM. This includes posting your role card verbatim. Paraphrasing is fine, as are role claims naturally.
7. Do not talk about this game anywhere else, or with anyone else.
8. Do not discuss ongoing games in this thread. This includes games on sites other than mafiascum. This also includes using [redacted] as that loophole does not fly here.
9. We are usually rather lenient upon activity. This game is an exception. Post every 48 hours. Failure to do so will earn you a prod. Respond to your prod within 24 hours, or face replacement. Three prods is also a force replacement.
10. Claiming scum by yourself is fine. Claiming scum with another player is an instant modkill. Don't do it.
11. We do not require unvotes. Your vote will be counted so long as you bold it or use the vote tag. Shorthand names are fine so long as it’s clear who the vote is for.
12. If you have a question, please PM us. If a question is something that should be answered publicly, we will make a post addressing it without naming who asked it.
13. If our vote count is wrong, you can PM us or post in the thread (use the bold tag and "@MOD") about it.
14. We do not fix tags or edit posts where you might make a formatting mistake, even if you ask us to.
15. We reserve the right to add to these rules or modify them, but only when we post notifying all players in the game of the change.
16. Loophole abuse is all fun and games until we modkill you. Don’t try it.

is our color. You are welcome to use any other color of the rainbow.
18. Encryption, text hiding, and the like are silly. Don’t do it.
19. Do not use temporary information to convey messages. This includes your signature and your avatar, but is not limited to these things.
20. While putting your vote or unvote on its own line is helpful, it is not necessary and any attempts to game voting formatting will be dealt with as an attempt to cheat. If we think it was a vote, it was a vote.
21. A modkill will always punish the faction modkilled more as far as timing goes. All modkills will be done after consultation with the listmods. Modkills may or may not end the day. Modkilled players will be changed to a neutral survivor, meaning they lose the game instantly.
22. In the event of site downtime lasting more than 3 hours; time will be added to the deadline to compensate at a 1 to 1 ratio.
23. All factional decisions must be agreed upon by all living members of that faction.

Master Selection Phase

This phase lasts 7 days. All players will converse in the main thread and vote for a player to gain a Master. At the end of the phase, the servant with plurality gains a Master. (in the event of a tie, all "winning" slots will be randomly entered and one will be drawn) Having a Master confers benefits depending upon the alignment of the player:

If a town Master is selected, the town Master + servant is revealed as an innocent child and becomes unkillable by ANY means until day two has passed. The servant in that slot will additionally have their role modified to account for the additional support they now have. Day 1 will become an double-elimination day and last for 240 hours (10 days) instead of 168 hours (7 days). (The first elimination WILL reset the vote count)

If a scum Master is selected, that mafia member immediately flips and exits the main game thread. The three remaining members of mafia have their role PMs upgraded to much stronger versions of their existing abilities, while the flipped member of the mafia remains in the scum PT, allowed to advise and lead the team.

The game will then proceed into Day 1 as a single-elimination day.

Noble Phantasm (And Noble Phantasm Charge)

1) Each Servant has a different number of charges required to fully charge their Noble Phantasm Bar. This is three (***), four (****), or five (*****) dependent on class.
2) At the start of the game (Day One) every player's bar has zero charges. Before each day phase begins (and after all night actions are resolved), each player gains one charge. Any double-elimination phases, modkills, or transitions from Master Voting phase to Elimination Day Phase do not count as starts of day phases.
3) If a player starts the day phase with a fully charged Noble Phantasm Bar, they can activate their Noble Phantasm during that day phase if possible unless something occurs earlier in the game day to reduce their charge.
4) If a player starts a night phase with a fully charged Noble Phantasm Bar, they can activate their Noble Phantasm during that night phase if possible.
5) Charge bar level is private information and may be requested by a player for themselves at any time in the game by PMing the mod. Players will also be informed of their current NP charge at the start of each day and night phase as well as any changes to it that happen as a result of day actions immediately.
6) If a Noble Phantasm is sealed, it will not activate but will remain fully charged pending other effects.
7) Once a Noble Phantasm is activated, its charge bar will be reduced to zero.

Other Setup Specific Rules

1. Players, when flipped, will have the identity of all players that were playing as that slot revealed.
2. The deadline will always be set to end at 9PM CST of a given day.
3. Deadlines for all player phases (days) are set at 7 days. Enemy phases (night) are 48 hours. Replacements (Of the non-forced type) will add in an additional day, up to three days added per cycle.
4. Posting in a different thread as your alt OR posting in this game from any account other than your alt will cause a force-replacement.
5. A game phase is considered "exhausted" if a phase generated more than 60 new pages of posts. At that point, the game will enter "wind down" phase. The page count of the current player phase will be provided in each vote count.
6. During "wind down" each player is allowed a one post, and one additional post per vote on them at the time of the thread lock. (These counts will be mod-provided publicly)
7. Failure to comply with wind down rules will be met with loss of abilities, vote, or both. You REALLY don't want to do this.
8. As a part of being the change in the world I wish to see, the term for removal is generically "elimination" or "eliminated" If you wish to be more gruesome, please use "burn" and "burned" as that is a mechanic in the FGO game!
9. Unless explicitly said otherwise, you may only use one active skill on any given night. Noble Phantasms are not skills, you may use a Noble Phantasm and a skill simultaneously.
10. The mafia factional kill is explicitly excluded form this role. Mafia members may perform the Night Kill in addition to any action(s) allowed by rule 9.

Additional Setup Notes

1. This game heavily focuses around the fact that your class is known, but your specific servant's identity is not. Be aware that just is as true of most stories, knowing one's myth means knowing one's weaknesses. Be careful when claiming or revealing information about your role.
2. This game may feature characters from various religions and mythologies. No offense is meant towards any specific religion or ethnic group. Please feel free to PM Cabd or penguin_alien if you have concerns during the game about game content or player posting.

Disclaimer: Multiple reviewers concur: This setup is plenty fair to run, but needs a swingyness warning. Think of this setup as taking place in the 2014 era of mafiascum. Players, if hesitant to play knowing this, should know that there will be no hard feelings if they reject their role PM and ask to be replaced pregame. You may do so via PM to the mod as a reply to your role PM. Your role PM, and all further correspondence, will be sent to the alt account you were given and NOT your main account. Players are reminded that nothing about the account should be personalized, other than the time zone.

Yet another morning with all the unsummoned Servants lazing around the Throne of Heroes. These occasional Wars were all well and good, Grail-kun thought, but it sure did leave a lot of down time to fill for everyone involved.

Why not liven things up? Let those Servants get a taste of a Master’s power, get some free entertainment, and let everyone make new friends! Friends are good, right?

Grail-kun, disregarding any rules that might prevent such an occurrence in canon, reached into the vast multiverse and plucked out a Master, dropping them in a heap in front of the Throne of Heroes. All conversation amongst the gathered Servants came to a dead stop.

Of course, in breaking so many laws of physics and narrative and general decency, those good intentions of providing friendship may have gone slightly awry. Along with expenditure of power came a tiny amount of pure evil. Indeed, it was enough to infect four of the gathered Servants, who immediately recognized their fellows in the circle that had gathered around the dazed Master.

“A Master!” “A power infusion!” “Someone new to talk to!” Various exclamations rumbled through the crowd.

“HOLD UP!”

Silence descended again as the Master cleared their throat. “There’s one of me, and…” counting quickly, “…fourteen of you. I’m powerful, but not that powerful. This isn’t some wish fulfillment game you play on your phone where I can power all of you whenever I want. I can bond with one of you. I’ll leave it up to you,” gesturing to the assembled mass, “to decide who that will be.”

If nothing else, the Master had certainly had time to observe the gathered group of Servants. There had been bickering, raging, bantering, joking, and of course rampant speculation. Plenty of information to take in about this motley crew vying for the Master's power. And yet, while the overall tenor was still that of a group that had once united to save humanity, the Master (by virtue of their vast experience) could sense a thread of malevolence somewhere in the crowd.

They'd suggested several different Servants to receive the bond with the Master, with popular opinion flitting about like a tiny airborne dog. Grail-kun had begun to despair of an actual majority opinion coalescing around any one candidate. But then! A friend who stood out among the crowd!

The Servants had come to an agreement (or enough of one for a Grail, at any rate): Assassin would bond with the Master. Not all of them had chosen Assassin, but there was a clear majority. The Master, command spells and all, finally had a Servant.

"Thank Arceus my Mystic Code means I don't need to eat and drink these days," the Master groused. "You're agreed?"

Avenger nudged Assassin forward. The Master and Assassin locked eyes for a long minute. "Let's do this," Assassin said.

The Master hesitated. "Before I take you on, I need to know something. I've sensed a force at work here that isn't on board with the spirit of friendship and such. Almost pure evil, if you will. Are you aligned with such forces?"

Assassin smiled slowly. "I am..."

The Master and Assassin gained a brief glimmer that faded within moments. Assassin gave a shake. "That's new. All right then. And you have three command spells?"

"That's the deal, across all the franchises."

Assassin surveyed the remaining group of Servants. "Time to have some fun then."

A unidentified voice piped up. "There's evil here? We'd better send it back to its golden sparkles form then!"

Grail-kun settled in with a fresh bowl of popcorn balanced...on top? in?...its head as more Servants chimed in. The real fun had begun.

And the Servants were off to the races. They had their best evil-hunting faces on, and plenty of discussion ensued. Master wandered over to Grail-kun at one point to snag a handful of popcorn. It seemed fitting.

As popular opinion coalesced around one Servant in particular, that Servant suddenly doubled over, cradling a section of her abdomen. Archer then looked up with a twisted grin, the shadow of a knife clenched in her fist.

"One way or another, I'm not surviving this. But I know I don't want any of these goody two shoes to get what they want: none of this friendship persevering through all trials!" Asagami Fujino stumbled back as the Master blasted her from across the room.

"Maybe I can be the hero next time..." Fujino didn't have time to say anything else before her violet hair faded to golden sparks that enveloped the rest of her body. All that remained was a golden cube.

No one said anything. The Master looked a bit shaken, and the burning of a fellow Servant was enough to sober even the most jovial in the crowd.

Then Grail-kun laughed and vomited up a knife. "Making friends! Let's keep going!"

As a result of not knowing of pain, without being able to sympathize with people's feelings, she was isolated from others. Fujino, who had a high intelligence since she was young, for the sake of protecting herself, concealed the fact that she had analgesia in order to appear to her surroundings as "an ordinary human" and even deceived her own self.

Grail-kun was getting sleepy. Maybe it was the choice to switch from popcorn to more adult beverages. Could a Grail be in its cups?

The diminished party of Servants was also running low on mana. Even with the threat of more evil amongst them, enthusiasm was dragging.

"How about the lilac-haired chick?" someone asked. "She's just kind of planted herself there, not making us think she's particularly good."

The Servants coalesced into a loose circle around Mash. They egged each other on to all focus their destructive power on her. "...I just wanted to help the Master. Notice me, Senpai!" she wailed.

The Master did indeed notice Mash, as she retreated in shame, her face purple with embarrassment. Everyone held their (mostly non-existent) breath, waiting to see how the miasma of evil might change with her elimination.

Nothing. Grail-kun yawned and vomited a bit. "How about you all spend some time getting a different perspective on this situation, look at it in your spiritual forms. Come back and see what you think later."

One by one, the remaining Servants disappeared, until all that remained was Grail-kun, a flustered Master, and a large shield, rocking slightly in a phantom breeze.

...ten, eleven, twelve. Grail-kun clapped head-tentacles together in glee. "All my friends came back!"

"But so did the evil," the Master noted. "It seems our work is not done. I should have packed a bento box before Rayshifting in here." This elicited a wide variety of suggestions as to what was best included in a bento box. But eventually the conversation moved on. After all, there were bigger mackerel to fry.

The atmosphere was dimming as Grail-kun witnessed the end of the day's proceedings. With the eliminations of Archer and Shielder, the group clearly wasn't interested in joking around any longer. And so, they selected one of their number to burn.

The group's target stood defiantly amidst a growing circle of accusing faces. The Servant continued shouting invective at the others, until with a gasp, the Servant's complexion turned blue-black and blood dripped out of Saber's mouth.

"I guess I overexerted myself there...but you will feel my despair in time!" Okita Souji hacked up more blood, and it was almost anticlimactic when the Master dealt a final blow to send Okita spinning into a haze of golden sparkles.

Clink-clank-clunk

Five golden cubes dropped into Grail-kun's waiting cup. "Good choice, everyone! Something for me to play with while you all rest up for the next round of fun!"

As the eleven Servants faded, Grail-kun jiggled a bit in place to hear the sound of the Rare Prisms against the cup walls. It certainly felt less oppressively evil!

A third day rolled around. While the Master would never have admitted it, the return of the Servants and their bickering and their attendant evil miasma was welcome. After spending the time of their absence playing Hangman with Grail-kun and determining that the answer would always be 'knife', 'friend', or 'cup', anything to alleviate the monotony would be a boon.

And here came the shimmers. Eleven glimmers coalescing into the familiar class representatives. Well, ten. And one who didn't quite seem to be materializing apace with the others. The small Servant form pulsed, dimly showing dark hair and a variety of tattoos with a haze of red. Avenger's mouth was moving, and the ten solidified Servants leaned in with Grail-kun and Master to catch his final words.

"I was supposed to be the big root of evil here! How could they..." Lamenting the loss of his defining characteristic, Angra Mainyu shimmered out one final time. Hanging in the air there seemed to be hundreds of thousands of mirages of green hands clasped in greeting before even that faded.

Twelve pairs of eyes blinked. "But he was our friend!" Grail-kun said. "Find out who's responsible for this. I'll even donate a knife to the cause."

Master looked warily at Grail-kun as the ten Servants dove into another day's debate.

Grail-kun was getting irritated. Solution? Vomit up some knives at these irreverent Servants.

Thwap, thunk

A slime-coated knife landed squarely between Caster and Rider, just barely missing lopping off several of Rider's fingers. "There's evil here! Tell the Master where it is so we can go back to being friends."

With far too much grumbling for Grail-kun's liking, the ten remaining Servants resumed casting suspicious glances at one another. Reminded of their task, they quickly pounced on one Servant with quite a unique hair color. Lancer, backed into a corner, whipped out two chains, twirling them through the descending mist with only a tinge of desperation.

"Master! You think you can defeat our evil?" Enkidu snapped the chain in their left hand at Master's ankles, only just missing. "You think one such as yourself can face me at the Throne of Heroes and burn me? I fought Gilgamesh to a standstill. You are no god to leave me crawling in the mud." Their right chain lashed out, and the Master caught the end around an outstretched arm with a wince of pain.

"I don't bring water to dissolve you. I'll take you apart one bolt of magic at a time if that's what it takes." With the unencumbered arm, the Master sent magic searing through the air, where it pounded into Enkidu's chest. Enkidu staggered, momentarily winded. Another bolt slammed into Enkidu's left hip, spinning them around and tugging the Master off-balance as well with the chain still connecting them.

"I was ready for evil to triumph! How are you doing this?" Enkidu's rage was cut off abruptly with a third bolt to their neck, and the chains began to dissolve mid-air. Both arms finally freed, the Master bent double, spent from such a magical effort. The shimmering enveloped Enkidu, and their divinely beautiful features blurred into nothingness.

Five golden cubes remained, but no one was inclined to claim the prize this time.

"You're getting good at this!" Grail-kun cheered. "It was completely worth giving you three of those golden cubes." A sulky look oozed into the slimy face. "I still think it would have been more inspirational for you to learn to juggle with some of my knives though."

The Master caught the three cubes (a feat that would have been...unlikely...before Lancer's burning) and looked nervously at the small pile of knives gathered near the Throne. "I don't regenerate nearly as well as these Servants do, so I'm quite all right with using these, thank you, friend."

"Have it your way." Grail-kun perked up as shimmers began to materialize. The Master tossed the cubes back into Grail-kun's cup and began tallying the returnees.

"Nine. You're all still here!" The Master smiled just a bit and seemed to relax.

"And eight of them are potential friends! Only one evil to burn!" Grail-kun chortled. "Want to borrow a knife for this phase, Master?"

"That's all right. We'll see how things go, and if I end up in a tight spot I can juggle one of your knives alongside my magecraft."

Nine solidified Servants launched into discussion. No one wanted to let down their side.

With little discussion, one by one Servants turned on a shadowy presence. The targeted Servant sighed and looked at the group. "Even you, my love? You would risk death at my side?"

Caster drew herself up. "I still fear death. But love cannot be denied. Our fates at the Throne this time are linked."

Ruler focused on the Master. "Take me if you think you can." Their body expanded to dominate the area, enveloping the bystanders in mirages of palatial surroundings. Liquid silver flashed through the air, diving in the Master's direction.

The Master grimaced. "It seems we have the last evil Servant here. Well done, the rest of you. But it's time to end this." With a wave of a hand, the Master took control of the mercury and turned it back on Ruler in a whirlwind that grew to draw in Scheherazade as well. She wailed in fear but otherwise made no move to flee. Shi Huang Di's artificial body creaked and groaned under the onslaught, and finally with a growl of frustration, they faded in a haze of golden sparkles with Scheherazade. She looked just a touch smug before vanishing.

Ten golden cubes were left behind. Ten figures remained standing in front of the Throne of Heroes. Grail-kun dripped quietly while looking at the remaining friends. The air was clear of all traces of evil.

She can channel the rage she feels into raw destructive power, at the cost of being unable to hear out anyone she deems an enemy. Atalanta will be your ally or your enemy entirely based upon her own morals, and where you sit with them.

A ninja of the clan sharing his name. Kotaro was the 5th leader of this group. Very little is left in historical record about the exact methodology of the Fuma clan, but what is known is their use of quick mob tactics to overwhelm their opponents with sheer numbers. Kotaro was rumored to have the blood of an Oni running through his veins, but his personality was that often called too friendly to be a killer.

Why?

Because I fucked up and sent Beast the incorrect older version of their PM that would NOT block the night kill, but processed the game using the final version of their role, which DID block night kills.

I sincerely apologize for the confusion, and hope that players can forgive me for the mistake.

Spoiler: Master Phase Thoughts

Right, so, Master phase.

Everyone obviously will have differing opinions about the optimal use or mis-use of this phase and ability.


Here's my take:

As town, you want to elect the most try hard charismatic townie. One that will get along with everyone, use their power responsibly, and keep the game on track while alive. Honestly, I don't think town could have done any better than Assassin for that role in this game. Speaking more broadly, the master vote hitting mafia isn't all that big of a deal if you're targeting the most charismatic... Yes, mafia gets their big bad upgrades, but you just took out the mafia most likely to be able to influence the game state the most, and confined them to the mafia PT instead. Now you have a flip AND know that the mafia silver tonged baddie is out of the picture.

As mafia, I see two valid approaches. One is to try and elect one of your own and bank on the powerups, and playing 10-3 with uber-charged roles. That one is good if you think your mafia team is all of equal skill, or you have three powerful players and one weaker player that you feel can be successfully "obvtowned" enough for a masterization.

The other approach, and the one that I would have taken with a mafia PM this game, is to drive the master onto somebody from the town who is unlikely to properly use the newfound status. Take a player who is good at appearing town but is lurky, or lazy, or divisive. Argue HARD that you're worried about mafia getting the role so you'd rather the obvtown lurksack, over the charismatic person who could be really good mafia. In this game, I would have been trying to drive the master powers HARD onto Foreigner, Berserker, or Caster.

Foreigner was fairly lurk-happy when things started slowing down, and would likely drive their now confirmed-town agenda into an argument with berseker, creating a bunch of noise and apathy. Berserker would have been the other side of that coin, likely pushing hard to remove foreigner. Caster, on the other hand, was fairly snarky and at least from outside appearances, would not have been likely to do nearly the level of cohesion and sorting that Assassin did this game.


The problem for mafia this game is that they chose... none of these. They didn't even discuss their options, or have a plan. They just kind of went at it on their own, which allowed town to find town QUICKLY, leaving them out in the cold.

With their 4 votes, they could have swung things HARD towards foreigner or berserker, or even caster, MUCH earlier in the master drive phase.

Spoiler: Main Gameplay Thoughts

So.... a complete and utter town stomp. The MVP of this game simply has to be petapan. As assassin, he not only flushed out multiple members of the scum team, he got to work instead of checking out, and kept town together, instead of letting it drift into a paranoid mess of melted ice cream.

Town identified each other, used Assassin as the central authority, and steamrolled. Most of the scum had been POE'd before day one was even over.

After that, it was a matter of cleanup.

I'll let players handle the bulk of postgame discussion, as I was the one with the eagle-eyed view... But yeah. Woo finally a Cabd theme that isn't a complete mafia stompfest?

I would play this flavor again without hesitation, avatars and all. The design is awesome and I feel like we explored about 40-50% of the possibilities. The various entanglements my role could have had with Berserker and Foreigner never came close to firing as far as I can tell. Probably a good thing for my sanity's sake. Winding up in as many as 3 neighborhoods would have seriously tweaked my paranoia.

The player list is awesome, too! I reluctantly came out of mafia retirement to play a Cabd game, and this game was totally worth it.

Couldn't agree more. This game was a blast and I enjoyed every minute of it. I could've neighborized half the damn playerlist and still had a blast
